I did not ever meet or serve with this courageous young man. I'm impressed by all I've read below. I found this guest book entry after I saw Jay's name on the computer lab directly behind the CMS Faulkenburg theater at FOB Warhorse.
God bless Jay! I hope the Lord let's Jay look down on his young son and widow.

Holding you all in my thoughts and prayers.

The Wind on The Downs

“I like to think of you as brown and tall,
As strong and living as you used to be,
In khaki tunic, Sam Brown belt and all,
And standing there and laughing down at me.
Because they tell me, dear, that you are dead,
Because I can no longer see your face,
You have not died, it is not true, instead
You seek adventure in some other place.
That you are round about me, I believe;
I hear you laughing as you used to do,
Yet loving all the things I think of you;
And knowing you are happy, should I grieve?
You follow and are watchful where I go.”

(Written by Marian Allen during World War l )

Two lines that I wish you to keep near your heart…….

“You seek adventure in some other place.
That you are round about me, I believe”

I did not know Jay, but I am remembering
his service and sacrifice. He is my hero. !

The Other Side

i'm over on the other side
where life and death softly divide.
left my skin and bones behind
now i'm over on the other side.

can you feel me there with you?
my breath is gone but i'm not through.
loved you then and i still do
from over on the other side.

i can fly. really fly.
below the earth ... all through the sky.
tell em all i did not die.
i'm just over on the other side.

it's good here on the other side.
the sweetest songs...the bluest skies.
thank you for the tears you cried
but it's good here on the other side.

i can fly. really fly. below the earth...all through the sky.
tell em all i did not die.
i'm just over on the other side

the world is smaller than a needle's eye.
where life and death softly divide.
when you leave your skin and bones behind
i'll be waiting on the other side.

i can fly. really fly. below the earth ... all through the sky.
go tell em all i did not die.
i'm just over on the other side.

To Jay and his family. Myself and a few others had the privledge to serve with Jay in our beggining years of AIT and the horrors of the first duty station. We had some good times. I think what hurts the most for me is that I barley had time to cope with this. I was in Iraq when I heard the news. It had been so long since we had talked, I thought he got out. I am deeply sorry for you loss. I knew him well and I thought of him as one of my closest freinds. You don't get a lot of them. He is the first true friend I have lost to this war. You guys are in my thoughts and prayers.
For you jay, Adrie and I are finally having our first child. I thought you would like to know that. You were a good friend, tell god I said hi and one day we will meet again.

I would first like to say that I am sorry for your lost. I too lost someone in Iraq. My son SPC Ryan Russell was lost March 5, 2007. He was with the 1st Cav 3rd Brigade 1st Squardon 12th Division from Ft. Hood and he was a combat medic. I think that maybe these two served together.
Please know that God can comfort you in this time.

Jay,

It has been so long since I have seen your face. You are not forgotten. Although you and Heather did not work out, we vowed to keep in touch so that I could see Devin when you would come back from Iraq. How I kick myself daily for not meeting up with you and Devin before you took him up to your mom's so that you could go fight for our freedom. I am truly sorry that we missed each other before your departure. "If I had only known" I would be there still, waiting, to see you and Devin off. We will meet again oneday. You will always be loved and missed!

Freedom has never been free, for if it was, we would not have to lose the ones we love fighting for it!

YOU KEPT TELLING ME TO TAKE THAT CONTRACTOR JOB, AS YOU KNEW IT WOULD MAKE ME PROUD, JUST AS PROUD AS YOU WERE WITH YOUR MILITARY CAREER. WELL BUD, IT MAY NOT HAVE WORKED OUT AS WELL AS I PLANNED SO I'M BACK IN THE ARMY FOR A COUPLE MORE YEARS. I TRIED THO. I'LL TRY AGAIN SOON, LOL. I'M PROUD OF YOU AND YOUR ULTIMATE SACRIFICES FOR US ALL AND YOUR ENTIRE COUNTRY AND FAMILY. THEY LOVE YOU! YOU KNOW THAT I'M SURE. I LOVE YOU MAN, YOU KEPT ME MENTALLY SOUND, ACTUALLY, I LOVED COMING OVER TO SEE YOU AND SPC FELTHOUSE AT UDAY'S PALACE IN BAGHDAD (AND BEFORE OIF 2). I HAD A GREAT TIME BEING YOUR FRIEND, AND THANKS FOR ALL THE LAUGHS AND SILLY E-MAILS THAT YOU WENT OUT OF YOUR WAY TO KEEP ME ENTERTAINED THAT YEAR IN BAGHDAD. YOU TRAINED ME WELL IN COMMUNICATIONS, THANKS FOR ALL THE PERSONAL TRAINING YOU GAVE ME AFTER WORK HOURS ON SUCH SHORT NOTICE TOO. I OWE YOU ANOTHER 6-PACK OF B-LIGHT FOREVER FOR THAT. I WOULDN'T BE AS SMART AS I AM NOW WITHOUT THAT SUPPORT. SORRY THO, I JUST LEARNED OF YOUR LOSS TODAY AND THAT I COULD NOT BE AT YOUR MEMORIAL SERVICE. I HAVE BEEN OUT OF TOUCH OF A LOT OF GOOD PEOPLE AND FRIENDS I USED TO KNOW FROM 1ST CAV. FOR A LITTLE BIT. YOU WERE MY RELIEF AND COMFORTING PAL IN IRAQ AND BEFORE. I WILL FOREVER REMEMBER YOU AND HONOR YOU TO MY FRIENDS AND FAMILY. I WISH YOUR SON WELL ALWAYS. MAY HE BE WATCHED BY ANGELS AND BY YOU, WHEREVER HE MAY GO. MAY YOUR MOTHER AND YOU KNOW THAT YOU SAVED MY LIFE THAT YEAR. I WAS WORRIED THAT YEAR, AND YOU TOOK IT UPON YOURSELF TO BE THERE FOR ME. --I PROMISE THE NEXT TIME I GO OUT TO CELEBRATE SOME 'HIGH SPIRITS', IT WILL BE IN YOUR HONOR MY FRIEND! WE SHALL SEE EACH OTHER AGAIN.

There is nothing that I can say or do to take away the pain or bring you peace in your time of sorrow, but I will offer you and your family my heart felt condolences. I also offer you my prayers that in time the pain will easy and the memories of your HERO will carry you through each day and night. I want to thank your HERO, for his/her selfless act of becoming a member of the armed forces, his/her willingness to defend the United States of America, all that we hold sacred and for the sacrifice that will forever be etched in the memories of all those who knew him/her. Though tears can never bring him/her back, we hope that our tears express our gratitude for the sacrifice that he/she made and our sorrow at his/her passing. I believe for every fallen HERO there is a star shining brightly up above to remind us of the precious gift we were given.

Your mission on earth is complete and you are now a member of GOD’s Heavenly armed forces. Stand down brave warrior and take your rightful place in Heaven with all the HEROES who have passed before.

I made a special promise to LE RON A. WILSON, a dear family friend who joined the Army with three other friends, one of whom is my son (Le Ron was killed in action on 07/06/07 at the age of 18) on the day he was laid to rest as I touched his coffin, that I would never forget him nor would I forget those that gave their lives for our country before him, with him and after him and so when I came across www.legacy.com, I thought what a great way to keep my promise to Le Ron, so I will continue to leave tributes in each guest book until the day there is no longer the need to leave these tributes to a FALLEN HERO.

REST IN PEACE, HERO, YOU WILL NEVER BE FORGOTTEN!!

I DID NOT KNOW SGT. GAUTHREAUX BUT I FEEL THE NEED TO LET YOU KNOW HE IS A REAL HERO IN MY BOOK. MY SON-IN-LAW DIED IN IRAQ IN JANUARY OF THIS YEAR. THEY BOTH SHOWED MORE GUTS THAN I AM CAPABLE OF. NICK CAME HOME AFTER CHRISTMAS JUST IN TIME TO SEE HIS FIRST SON BE BORN. HE RETURNED TO HIS DUTY STATION IN IRAQ ONLY ONE DAY BEFORE HIS UNTIMELY DEATH. HE WAS IN 2/7 CAV AND REALLY ENJOYED BEING IN THE INFANTRY. I HOPE AND PRAY THAT BOTH YOUR GRANDSON AND MINE WILL GROW UP TO KNOW HOW HEROIC THEIR FATHERS WERE. I AM SORRY FOR YOUR LOSS AND SHARE YOUR GRIEF IN THESE HARD TIMES. PLEASE BE ASSURED THAT HE WILL ALWAYS BE HONORED AS THE GREAT SOLDIER THAT HE IS. THANK YOU,

Having jay as a fellow classmate and good friend, I know how much he cared for everyone close to him. Remembering times of playing football in the local elementary school yard for fun was one of the greatest times we had together. Talks of enlisting in the army started early for jay, and eventually he talked me into enlisting on the buddy program. Regretfully, now, i didnt follow him and I enlisted in the marine corps. We lost touch after that but i will always have the school yard football games, the fourth grade Christmas play and all the clowning around in school in memory. My simpathy goes to all who knew and loved him in this time of mourning. He really was one of the great ones of our generation.

“Soldier”
To Honor the Service of Our Fallen Soldiers

Soldiers write history, we pay the price
Many miles distant, you live the life
Entered the Battle of our own free will
Out of Duty for Country, and we’d do it still

We hope and pray that all will find peace
In God, in the flag, in memories of valor
Gone now, our pride and courage you see
“An Army of One” our motto forever

Willing to risk all for love of our Brothers
We’re still Your Soldiers…and we showed the way
Our Lives too short, now pray for the others
Lived free died Heroes in lands far away

Deep within souls all cherished our Service
We’ll always have what some never know
Courage and Honor, our names forever
Lived life with purpose…just our time to go

We march in the Heavens with Honor and Glory
Missions accomplished we fought the Good Fight
Many years from now…we’ll tell the full story
Until that Day we will live in the Light

Our lives we laid down in a land far away
Still watching o’er you this night and by day
No need to talk…just know we are with you
There in your hearts and we hear what you pray

Yes we are your soldiers
Our lives we laid down
Still We guard o’er you
Still Duty bound

Entered the Battle of our own free will
Out of Duty for Country, and we’d do it still
We’ll always have what some never know
Lived life with purpose…it was our time to go

Dead is a young man
A casualty of war

On behalf of my son, Jay, my grandson, Devin, and my husband Doug, I would like to send my sincere appreciation to all of you who are standing beside us during this most difficult time in our lives. Jay was my baby, my only son. I loved him from the moment I saw him, July 14, 1980. I knew he had a determined spirit even then. He rolled over at one week and was determined to walk without the braces he had to wear as a toddler. He has always been my “Hero”. I will miss the monthly phone calls and the jokes he played on me. I am determined to keep his memory alive for my grandchild, Devin. Actually sometimes I think Jay is just on another tour and we are keeping Devin for him as we did many times, including his first tour in Iraq.
Again, thank you all for your support, the late night cries I had with many of you, the gifts you sent and especially the prayers. A mother should never have to bury her child, my only solace is knowing he died fighting for what he believe in. May Jay’s sacrifice bring freedom to the World!

We will always clown around, when I had bad days he was always there to cheer me up with his little jokes and comments. He love his teckno music. The last time that I saw him was his first tour to Iraq, thats when he told me he had a babyboy and was so proud. G you will always be in my memories I know your in a better place watching over us. To my loving family,

There isn't a day that goes by that I am not thankful for all of you. In this trying and difficult time, we are so blessed to have each other. I am strengthened everyday by Monique's determination and Uncle Mike's solid foundation. I feel blessed to have you in my life. I love you.

To my Jaybird,

Words cannot express how terribly I miss you. I miss those bear hugs that break my back. I miss the times when we were growing up that you would scare me at MawMaw'a house and think that was the funniest thing on earth.....it wasn't. I miss you calling me "ugly" eventhough we both know that is an utter untruth :). I miss the e-mails and the chats online. I miss the stories and the LSU games we used to talk about. You were the greatest man I have ever known. Your heart was so filled with love for everyone you met. You truly are an inspiration to me and the way I want to live my life. I am so proud of everything you have done for your family and your counrty. I smile for you every time I say the pledge or sing the National Anthem. We all have you as our own personal hero. The last words I said to you on Earth were "I love you and be safe". You are safe in the Father's arms now and waiting for all of us to join in your party. I'll see you again and I'm expecting a HUGE hug. I love you Jaybird. Thank you for what you have meant for me.

Love always,

Your strength in this time is truly remarkable. Jay was an amazing person, a loving father, a devoted son, brother, cousin, and a truly American soldier. He loved his country and family so dearly. You were truly blessed to have him and I am just proud to call him my cousin. He will be remembered forever. He's now waiting for us at the Gates of Heaven, anxious to greet us all with that smile of his along with one of his giant bear hugs.

To my dearest mother, Faye, some things I'd like to say;
but first of all, to let you know, that I arrived in heaven okay.

Please do not be unhappy just because I'm out of sight.
Remember that I'm with you and Devin every morning, noon and night.
That day I had to leave you and Devin when my life on earth was through,
God picked me up and hugged me and He said, "I welcome you."

God gave me a list of things that he wished for me to do.
And foremost on the list, was to watch and care for Devin and you.
When you're walking down the street, and you've got me on your mind; I'm walking in your footsteps only half a step behind.

And when it's time for you to go from your body to be free, remember you're
not going you're coming here to your Daddy, Mickey and me!

To the family of G, I want to express my deepest sympathies to you and to Devin. G was a wonderful friend to everyone that he met. He will be greatly missed. The card games and hot wing parties will never be the same. G please know that you will never be forgotten and that Devin will always know how wonderful a father you were to him and what a great friend you were to those of us who knew you. You will always be in our hearts. Dallas will always remember the Walls of Jericho and games that you played with him. I will always remember your wonderful smile and the way you would always talk about Devin. God bless you G until we meet again.

SGT Gauthreaux,
Words can not express how greatly you will be missed. It seems so unreal that you are really gone from us. It probably wont hit me until the day HHC 3 BCT comes home and you will not be getting off the bus at Cooper Field. I pray that you will watch over HHC 3 Brigade during the rest of their deployment and always. You were the true definition of a "Greywolf" Soldier. I always looked up to you as a person and as a non commissioned officer. There were not many people in the company that I could talk to but no matter what, I knew I could talk to you. Even when I got out of the army in July 2006 and then had to come back because of stop loss you were there to talk to me. We talked about the last time we were over in Iraq and you told me that this would be your last deployment because you wanted to spend time with Devin because he was getting older and growing up so fast. You have made the ultimate sacrifice for our country Sgt Jay Ryan Gauthreaux and I say thank you for all you have done for our country. My time in HHC 3 Brigade would not have been the same without you in it. I look forward to the day we will meet again. Rest in peace and God Speed.

THANK YOU, JAY. YOU GAVE THE ULTIMATE SO THAT WE CAN HAVE THE FREEDOMS THAT WE ENJOY AND TAKE FOR GRANTED ALL TOO OFTEN. AS I WALK THROUGH THE STORES, MALLS, ETC., AND I COME UPON A PERSON IN UNIFORM, I SHAKE THAT PERSON'S HAND AND SAY "THANK YOU." I DID NOT GET TO SHAKE YOUR HAND (OR MAYBE I DID) BUT I SAY "THANK YOU, JAY."

Mike and Wanda, and your family: you'll have endured the greatest lost of all, a child. A heroic young man and father that fought a fight he believed in. I have so much respect for the military. Since December the 4th at 8:30 p.m. your lives will never be the same. A part of your heart is now missing. Now you have an angel taking care of you'll. This angel will be with you at all times.

He paid the ultimate price my us to be safe in our own country - the land of the free and the home of the "Brave".

I know Devin will hear all the good stories about a wonderful father that is now missing in his life. I know he will see the love in his dad's eyes for him through the many pictures he will be shown.

Coach Mike was an inspiration to my sons on the baseball field. But he was more than just a coach; he was a leader. Just as Jay was a leader and an inspiration to all of us he leaves behind.

Yes, Jesus died for us and the soldiers die for us to be free.

I will keep all of you'll in my prayers. I know this road will be a difficult one. But, with God, family and friends - we will not let you'll down.

Today your extended family at the plant and the extended families that attended the service at the church showed you how much you'll mean to us.

The ceremony at church was breathtaking, emotional, sorrowful, it was overwhelming at times. But, most of all it showed how God is in our lives and we need him and we can't live without him. God will help you get through this.

Call on us anytime - because we love you'll.

Devin,
You are all your father talked about all the time. I had the pleasure of serving with him for a little over 6 years and I have to say that he is one of the finest soldiers and friends that I have ever met. He will be greatly missed and remembered forever. He is the definition and standard of a "GREY WOLF" soldier. It is just sad that he was taken away so soon. Til we meet again friend.

December 13, 2006

To my dearest family, some things I'd like to say...
but first of all, to let you know, that I arrived okay.
I'm writing this from heaven. Here I dwell with God above.
Here, there's no more tears of sadness; here is just eternal love.

Please do not be unhappy just because I'm out of sight.
Remember that I'm with you every morning, noon and night.
That day I had to leave you when my life on earth was through,
God picked me up and hugged me and He said, "I welcome you."

It's good to have you back again; you were missed while you were gone.
As for your dearest family, they'll be here later on.
I need you here badly; you're part of my plan.
There's so much that we have to do, to help our mortal man."

God gave me a list of things, that he wished for me to do.
And foremost on the list, was to watch and care for you.
And when you lie in bed at night, the day's chores put to flight.
God and I are closest to you....in the middle of the night.

When you think of my life on earth, and all those loving years
because you are only human, they are bound to bring you tears.
But do not be afraid to cry; it does relieve the pain.
Remember there would be no flowers, unless there was some rain.

I wish that I could tell you all that God has planned.
But if I were to tell you, you wouldn't understand.
But one thing is for certain, though my life on earth is o'er.
I'm closer to you now, than I ever was before.

There are many rocky roads ahead of you and many hills to climb;
but together we can do it by taking one day at a time.
It was always my philosophy and I'd like it for you too...
that as you give unto the world, the world will give to you.

If you can help somebody who's in sorrow and pain,
then you can say to God at night......"My day was not in vain."
And now I am contented....that my life has been worthwhile,
knowing as I passed along the way, I made somebody smile.

So if you meet somebody who is sad and feeling low,
just lend a hand to pick him up, as on your way you go.
When you're walking down the street, and you've got me on your mind;
I'm walking in your footsteps only half a step behind.

And when it's time for you to go.... from that body to be free,
remember you're not going.....you're coming here to me.

To Devin and the Rest of Jay's Family,
I served with Jay for about three years and was with him on his first tour in Iraq. I think I probably knew him better than any other officer in the unit. Words will never express what this loss will be like for you or how it will affect your lives. I just wish for you to know the truth about Jay as a soldier--he was a great one and everyone loved serving with him. Jay was reliable, dependable, motivated, and he knew his job inside and out. He was also very personable, good-natured, and funny; I always enjoyed seeing him. In short, Jay was one of the reasons I looked forward to my job. He was a soldier through and through. I considered Jay one of my comrades in arms, one of my favorites, one of the soldiers I would always remember fondly and hopefully see around the Army again. His loss will leave an impression on my heart forever. Please accept my deepest, most sincere, and heartfelt condolences.

Mike,
I want to express my deepest sympathy to you and your family at this most difficult time. I didn't know Jay, but if he was anything like his dad he was a good man. Too many times we take for granted our freedom and the men and women who protect us from harm and sacrifice so much to keep us free. We owe much to our present and past soldiers who have given their all for us to enjoy the life we have today. Find peace in the fact that Jay is in heaven with God never to suffer anymore and awaits the day when he is reunited with you and your family. God bless Jay and may he rest in peace.

To the family of Sgt. Jay Ryan Gauthreaux,
Although we did not have the pleasure of knowing Jay, we have recently had the pleasure of meeting some of his family members through our son Brett who is dating a family member. And from knowing this lovely family, we can imagine that Jay was just as wonderful as all the comments state about him and know that he was truly loved by all. May the peace of God and His understanding sustain you through this most difficult time in your lives and know that God has now raised him up on angel's wings. He will be remebered as a hero to us for giving the ultimate sacrifice of laying down his life for others for freedom. You all will continue to be remembered in our thoughts and prayers.

To the Family of SGT Gauthreaux,

I served with Jay during his first tour in Iraq. We spent many hours on guard together where I learned all about the adventures of Devin, LSU, and techno music. In the short time I knew him I found Jay to be a very loving father and a great soldier. It truly was an honor to serve with him.
