We went to the Vietnam War Memorial Traveling Wall today in Oceanside, CA. They were honoring ALL veterans who have given their lives, and we were surprised to see a wall for heroes who gave their lives in Iraq. We found Will's name and took a photo of the small plaque on the Global War on Terrorism Wall. Maria had a dog tag engraved with his name and info. We appreciated seeing all the veterans and participating in the tributes. We recommend visiting this exhibit if it comes to your town. God bless our fallen veterans.

I ordered four hero braclets from herobraclets.org. I requested that "random" braclets be sent to me meaning that I did not specify a soldier, rank, or military branch.
Upon receiving my package, I decided to close my eyes and reach inside to have my hero braclet "choose" me so to speak.
I am honored to have a hero braclet bearing Pfc William R. Newgard's name, rank, hometown, and the date he died serving his country.
I have read all I can find on the internet about him so that I may share his story to the best of my ability when asked about my hero braclet.
I am grateful to Pfc Newgard, his family, and all of the soldiers fighting in the name of their country.

Will Newgard entered the US Army eager to serve his country and follow in the footsteps of his brother-in-law, whom Will told us was a Calvary Scout. Will chose the infantry, and returned after training standing tall and proud. It was not the US Army that made Will a strong, courageous young man...it just gave him the ability to find it for himself. He gave his life for his country and for each one of us. We are so fortunate to have known a man such as PFC William Newgard. My prayers are with the family with the loss of such a fine man, but thanks for raising him to be of such a calibre that most can only dream of.
We'll always remember you, Will.

Holding you all in my thoughts and prayers.

The Wind on The Downs

“I like to think of you as brown and tall,
As strong and living as you used to be,
In khaki tunic, Sam Brown belt and all,
And standing there and laughing down at me.
Because they tell me, dear, that you are dead,
Because I can no longer see your face,
You have not died, it is not true, instead
You seek adventure in some other place.
That you are round about me, I believe;
I hear you laughing as you used to do,
Yet loving all the things I think of you;
And knowing you are happy, should I grieve?
You follow and are watchful where I go.”

(Written by Marian Allen during World War l )

Two lines that I wish you to keep near your heart…….

“You seek adventure in some other place.
That you are round about me, I believe”

I did not know William, but I am remembering
his service and sacrifice. He is my hero. !

The Other Side

i'm over on the other side
where life and death softly divide.
left my skin and bones behind
now i'm over on the other side.

can you feel me there with you?
my breath is gone but i'm not through.
loved you then and i still do
from over on the other side.

i can fly. really fly.
below the earth ... all through the sky.
tell em all i did not die.
i'm just over on the other side.

it's good here on the other side.
the sweetest songs...the bluest skies.
thank you for the tears you cried
but it's good here on the other side.

i can fly. really fly. below the earth...all through the sky.
tell em all i did not die.
i'm just over on the other side

the world is smaller than a needle's eye.
where life and death softly divide.
when you leave your skin and bones behind
i'll be waiting on the other side.

i can fly. really fly. below the earth ... all through the sky.
go tell em all i did not die.
i'm just over on the other side.

On this two year anniversary of losing Will, we are still thinking of a fallen hero and his sacrifice.
John is miraculously here in San Diego on a short R&R from Iraq, but has to report back in 2 days. We just looked at our photos of him and Will goofing around - from FAIR and all those bbq's at our house in Hawthorn Woods, and we fondly remember the good times. Our hearts go out to Will's whole family and wish them peace during this holiday season. God Bless America, and God Bless Will and family.

Dear family of Pfc. William R. Newgard,

We want to say thank you. We understand that no words can be adequate for your sorrow. We certainly do not want to intrude upon your privacy. As Americans we want you to know that we deeply appreciate the ultimate sacrifice your loved one has made for all of us. We also would like for you to be aware that with this letter comes our special concern and prayers for you. We are all safer because young men and women who love their country, and know the value of a free nation, are willing to put themselves in harms way, and lay down their lives to keep this nation free and safe for all of us.
Your sacrifice is also very great. We know that we can give little comfort; however, the knowledge that your loved one did not die in vain, but died in the service of our country, gives each of us a noble example of the value of life, and the responsibility of freedom. We hope this will bring pride and comfort to you.
We at Gethsemane Church believe that there is purpose to life. We send this letter with our deepest appreciation for the greatest of sacrifices, you and your loved one have given to this country. We know it is not enough, but please allow us to assure you that your loved one is not forgotten.

Very Sincerely

Frank G. Noyes

Happy Birthday Prayer
You would have been 21, on November 27, 2007. I know that you celebrated with the angels above. I have a special star at night that I look at and know that you are looking down from heaven and keeping a close eye on your mom. We miss you so.

August 16, 2007

There is nothing that I can say or do to take away the pain or bring you peace in your time of sorrow, but I will offer you and your family my heart felt condolences. I also offer you my prayers that in time the pain will easy and the memories of your HERO will carry you through each day and night. I want to thank your HERO, for his/her selfless act of becoming a member of the armed forces, his/her willingness to defend the United States of America, all that we hold sacred and for the sacrifice that will forever be etched in the memories of all those who knew him/her. Though tears can never bring him/her back, we hope that our tears express our gratitude for the sacrifice that he/she made and our sorrow at his/her passing. I believe for every fallen HERO there is a star shining brightly up above to remind us of the precious gift we were given.

Your mission on earth is complete and you are now a member of GOD’s Heavenly armed forces. Stand down brave warrior and take your rightful place in Heaven with all the HEROES who have passed before.

I made a special promise to LE RON A. WILSON, a dear family friend who joined the Army with three other friends, one of whom is my son (Le Ron was killed in action on 07/06/07 at the age of 18) on the day he was laid to rest as I touched his coffin, that I would never forget him nor would I forget those that gave their lives for our country before him, with him and after him and so when I came across www.legacy.com, I thought what a great way to keep my promise to Le Ron, so I will continue to leave tributes in each guest book until the day there is no longer the need to leave these tributes to a FALLEN HERO.

Will's grandmother and I are first cousins. I never met his grandmother and only met Dick, Will, Holly, and his Aunt Karen about 4 years ago at our Byrne Family reunion at Curdsville, KY., on the banks of the Green River. Dick told us at this year's reunion that Will drove a car for the first time on the streets of Curdsville. I am so glad that we all got to meet Will, his dad, his aunt, and his sister before this terrible tragedy. Family members are so important--there is no such thing as too much "family." My love and prayers go out to all the family and friends of Will. I am proud of him.

Although I did not know of this great man i feel closer and closer to him each and every day! People like Will inspire me to be who i am today. I am writing an article about him in my high school news paper and I feel like i can connect with him. This is a little poem I wrote in memory of Will.

There is no way to change what has happened
We just have to keep our memories
And never let them die in our hearts
Then they will always be with us
Looking down on us and watching over us
Wishing that they could be with us again
But the thing is… they never left
They were always there in side of us
And that is where they will stay
Forever and always
In our hearts

To Kaki, Dick, and Holly,
I am so sorry for the loss of Will. I am finally able to express my sincere sorrow to you about Will's death - With my own Army son leaving for overseas shortly, I've tried to block it all out of my mind. But that is not giving Will the respect he deserves. He is a Hero. So I write this to let you know I haven't forgotten about you all. You know Will often made me so angry in his struggles I wanted to smack him, and he also brought me great tears of joy in his triumphs. He impacted me greatly because of this, and I consider the summer he spent around my house a real blessing. Every letter through basic training, every email from afar kept him in our thoughts. Why this happened to your family I will never know - and please understand that I am thinking of you from far away in CA every day still. I pray for you to have strength every day, for all us military families to have strength every day. I wish I could have been at the service, and so does John. I am so sorry for your loss. In my eyes you guys are good parents, the best...don't forget that.

" THANK YOU, Pfc. WILL NEWGARD "

Last week, while traveling to Chicago on business, I noticed a Marine sergeant traveling with a folded flag, but did not put two and two together. After we boarded our flight, I turned to the sergeant, who'd been invited to sit in First Class (across from me), and inquired if he was heading home.

No, he responded.
Heading out I asked?

No. I'm escorting a soldier home.
Going to pick him up?

No. He is with me right now. He was killed in Iraq. I'm taking him home to his family.

The realization of what he had been asked to do hit me like a punch to the gut. It was an honor for him. He told me that, although he didn't know the soldier, he had delivered the news of his passing to the soldier's family and felt as if he knew them after many conversations in so few days. I turned back to him, extended my hand, and said, Thank you. Thank you for doing what you do so my family and I can do what we do.
Upon landing in Chicago the captain and first officer stopped short of
the gate and made the following announcement over the intercom.
"Ladies and gentlemen, I would like to note that we have had the honor of having Sergeant Steeley of the United States Marine Corps join us on this flight. He is escorting a fallen comrade back home to his family. I ask that you please remain in your seats when we open the forward door to allow Sergeant Steeley to deplane and receive his fellow soldier. We will then turn off the seat belt sign."
Without a sound, all went as requested. I noticed the sergeant saluting the casket as it was brought off the plane, and his action made me realize that I am proud to be an American.
So here's a public Thank You to our military Men and Women for what you do so we can live the way we do.

Red Fridays
Very soon, you will see a great many people wearing Red every Friday.
The reason? Americans who support our troops used to be called the "silent majority. We are no longer silent, and are voicing our love for God, country and home in record breaking numbers. We are not organized, boisterous or overbearing. Many Americans, like you, me and all our friends, simply want to recognize that the vast majority of America supports our troops. Our idea of showing solidarity and support for our troops with dignity and respect
starts this Friday -- and continues each and every Friday until the troops all come home, sending a deafening message that ... every red-blooded American who supports our men and women afar, will wear something red.
By word of mouth, press, TV -- let's make the United States on every
Friday a sea of red much like a homecoming football game in the
bleachers.
If every one of us who loves this country will share this with acquaintances, coworkers, friends, and family, it will not be long
before the USA is covered in RED and it will let our troops know the once "silent" majority is on their side more than ever, certainly more than the media lets on.
The first thing a soldier says when asked "What can we do to make things better for you?" is "We need your support and your prayers." Let's get the word out and lead with class and dignity, by example, and wear something red every Friday.

WE LIVE IN THE LAND OF THE FREE, ONLY BECAUSE OF THE BRAVE!!

To the family of PFC William Newgard,

There is a place where all tired soldiers go to reunite with comrades, both new and old. When a soldier enters, he is greeted with a toast, by all who have entered before. To enter Fiddlers Green, a soldier must have been a member of a Band of Brothers. In your grief, be assured that he is with those who have also made the sacrafice.

He is with friends, that will assure his comfort and well being.

I know this to be true, I have many friends that greeted Will.

Kaki -

You may not remember us but all 3 of my children attended Sanborn. My oldest is currently deployed in Iraq. It is for the ultimate sacrifice that a mother wears the gold star. I grieve for your loss but honor his choice in life. His bravery shall never be forgotten. Find joy in his love and remember he is always with you in your heart.

Sending you strength through our thoughts and prayers.

My whole class was stunned. We fill deeply sorry, and wish he were still beside us. Take comfort in that he got to do what he wanted most.
