Darrel Morris Obituary

Darrel James Morris 1985 – 2007 On January 21, 2007, Marine Corporal Darrel James Morris was killed in action in the Anbar province while serving his second tour of duty in Iraq. Darrel was performing as Turret Gunner in an MTVR when his vehicle was hit by an IED at an Iraq Army police checkpoint. Darrel was born in Tacoma, WA on May 27, 1985 to Jack Harvlie Jr. and Terry Morris. At age 10, he was taken in and raised by his aunt and uncle, Kim and Mik Cole of Spokane. In their care, Darrel flourished and grew. Darrel is survived by his aunt and uncle, Mik and Kim Cole, sisters Danielle Morris, Brittany Clark, Courtney and husband Tim Copeland, Shawndell and husband John Gleese, and six nieces and nephews, aunt Maureen and husband Jim Zwicker of Portland, grandparents Jack and Ardys Harvlie (deceased), great-grandfather Glen Voss of Tucson, birth father Jack Harvlie, Jr., and uncle Glen Harvlie of Tacoma. Darrel is also survived by a large extended family including grandmother Mona Cole, grandfather Milton Cole Sr. (deceased), aunts Pam Radogna of Bath, PA, Penny and husband Chris Carter of Longview, WA, and many other aunts, uncles, cousins and friends too numerous to mention. Darrel felt very strongly about his role as a Marine. He was fiercely proud of the job he was doing and served his country with passion. He was honored to be considered "One of the Few, the Proud, the Marines". Darrel was a young man overflowing with the promises and excitement of life. He lived and loved every minute to its fullest capacity. A funeral service will be held in Darrel's honor on Saturday, February 3, 2007 at Ferris High School in Spokane, WA. For details, see full obituary at www.spokesmanreview.com . Heritage Funeral Home, 508 N. Government Way, Spokane, WA, (509) 838-8900, entrusted with arrangements.

The Wind on The Downs

“I like to think of you as brown and tall,
As strong and living as you used to be,
In khaki tunic, Sam Brown belt and all,
And standing there and laughing down at me.
Because they tell me, dear, that you are dead,
Because I can no longer see your face,
You have not died, it is not true, instead
You seek adventure in some other place.
That you are round about me, I believe;
I hear you laughing as you used to do,
Yet loving all the things I think of you;
And knowing you are happy, should I grieve?
You follow and are watchful where I go.”

(Written by Marian Allen during World War l )

Two lines that I wish you to keep near your heart…….

“You seek adventure in some other place.
That you are round about me, I believe”

I did not know Darrel, but I am remembering
his service and sacrifice. He is my hero. !

The Other Side

i'm over on the other side
where life and death softly divide.
left my skin and bones behind
now i'm over on the other side.

can you feel me there with you?
my breath is gone but i'm not through.
loved you then and i still do
from over on the other side.

i can fly. really fly.
below the earth ... all through the sky.
tell em all i did not die.
i'm just over on the other side.

it's good here on the other side.
the sweetest songs...the bluest skies.
thank you for the tears you cried
but it's good here on the other side.

i can fly. really fly. below the earth...all through the sky.
tell em all i did not die.
i'm just over on the other side

the world is smaller than a needle's eye.
where life and death softly divide.
when you leave your skin and bones behind
i'll be waiting on the other side.

i can fly. really fly. below the earth ... all through the sky.
go tell em all i did not die.
i'm just over on the other side.

To All Parents
"I'll lend you for a little time a child of Mine,"He said.
"For you to love him While he lives and mourn for when he's dead.
It may be six or seven years, or 22 or three,
But will you, till I call him back, take care of him for me?
He'll bring his charms to gladden you, and shall his stay be brief.
You'll have his lovely memories as solace and relirf.
"I cannot promise he will stay, since all from earth return,
But there are some lessons taught down there I want this child to learn.
I've looked the wide world over in my search for teachers true
And from the throngs that crowd life's lanes I have selected you.
Noe will you give him all your love, nor think the labor vain,
Nor hate Me when I come to take him back again?"
For all the joy Thy child shall bring, the risk of grief we'll run.
We'll shelter him with tenderness, we'll love him while we may
And for the happiness we've known forever grateful stay,
But shall the angels call for him much sooner than we've planned.
We'll brave the bitter grief that comes and try to understand."

If this person can stand in battle to ensure my freedom, then I will stand in grief with his/her family to honor him/her. For every fallen HERO there is a bright star that shines in the evening sky to remind us of the cherished gift we were given – even if for too short a time.
My heart breaks again as I sign yet another guest book of another courageous young soldier who gave their life so selflessly. I wish I never found myself in a position to have to sign another guest book for the rest of my life, but I promised LE RON A. WILSON (a dear friend KIA 7/6/07, 18yrs old) that neither he nor any like him would be forgotten and so I will continue until the day there is no longer the need.

I had the pleasure of attending high school with Darrel. Although I was never close with him, I knew clearly who he was because of all the good things I heard about him. You could pick him out in a crowd because of his smile, of which I always saw him carry when I passed him in the hall. I can't thank your family enough for raising such a wonderful man and I can't thank Darrel enough for fighting for our country with honor and pride. He will truly be missed and my heart goes out to your family.

Dear Kim & Mik, my heart is broken for you. I wished we could have talked more at length on that evening we met. I am so so sorry that you have had to experience this horrible loss of such a wonderful young man. It is so hard to understand why our sons have been taken so early...and it may seem shallow to some...but our family has chosen to believe that our son's life, though short, was part of God's plan. Our mortal minds may never be able to comprehend what that plan is...we may have to wait until we see Him face to face. But that belief has helped us to face our sons death. I hope it will help you as well. Please contact me, I have not stopped thinking of you since Saturday night at the FNRA Banquet

I grew up with Darrel and Danni in Tacoma, Washington. I lived just a few houses away and as a matter of fact, we lived in their house on Winnifred right before they did. We played together, caused trouble together, and went through the hard times together. I remember him ALWAYS taking care of his little sister. He loved her so much. After they left Tacoma, I never heard from them or saw them again. I thought of their family often through the years. Wondered how he and his sister grew up. I could not believe when I heard of his passing. I cried and cried and couldn't believe that he was gone. Although I did not know him after about the age of 9 or 10, he sounds like an amazing person. My husband is currently in Iraq. I know how it feels to worry sick about them every minute of the day. I just don't understand why someone like him had to go. It may be a terrible loss to those who loved him but it was definitely heaven's gain.

My family and I are praying for you and your family during this difficult time. We send our deepest empathy as we lost our Marine on 11/30/05 in Fallujah. We are comforted to know that our Marines are serving their country with such honor and bravery. We are so proud of our Marines and all of our other service men and women for all that they have done and continue to do to keep us safe and to give us the freedom we have that so many take for granted.
They are true Heroes and need to always be remembered for their selflessness and sacrifice to better our world. We will forever be united in the loss of our heros. We are so sorry for your loss and hope our words will ease some of the pain, and maybe fill some of your emptiness.

I wish to express my condolences to the family of our fallen brother Darrel James Morris. My son, Dillon Barry is a Marine at Camp Lejune. At the memorial service yesterday, my heart was crushed at your loss.
Dillon was given leave to attend my father's funeral three weeks ago in California. Yesterday, the Marine honor guard, the twenty-one gun salute and folding of the flag all reminded me of the supreme sacrifice made by brave men like your son. My prayers go out to you that you will be able to accept this tragedy and find the honor that Darrel gave us all.

Dear Family of Darrel, While I never met Darrel, I too attended his service today to honor his dedication and service to all of us. I attended with my son, also a US Marine who served in Iraq in 2005, and who is now out of the USMC. The service was beautiful and Darrel was an amazing young man. Your loss is deep and I will pray for you. You did an amazing job in raising this fine young man. He will truly be missed. Thank you Darrel.

To the family of Darrel Morris,
Darrel was one of my best guy friends and I was cooresponding with him in Iraq ever since he left. We had numerous classes together, would talk on the phone when he was in Iraq, went to sporting events, dances, and many more events together. He was such an amazing person with the kindest heart and truly cared about everyone. I held his hand before he left for his first journey to Iraq and said I would always pray for him and told him he was so strong to fight for our country. This man was truly a hero and a great role model! I love Darrel with all my heart...thank you for letting him be a part of my life!

To the Morris Faily, I exend my deepest regrets over the loss of your son, Cpl. Darrel J. Morris. I too lost my son, L/Cpl.Carl L. Raines,II on 6 October 2005 to a roadside bomb in the city of Qaim, Al Anbar province.
Try to hold on to the good memories that occured in your lives because of the presence of Darrel. There will be a void that noone else can fill. I wish I could tell you time will make it easier for you. Each day there is some reminder of my son and the wonderful things he added to our lives.
I look forward to the day when we can all enter the gates of Heaven and be greeted by our sons. Until then hold on to God's hand. He alone is our hope.

Dear family of Darrel,
I did not know Darrel in person, but I do know what kind of person signs up for this kind of duty. He is a believer, a committed man. He thinks in bigger and more important circles than the rest of us. I know, because my son Benjamin C. Schuster was KIA Ramadi Iraq on February 25th, 2006. He volunteered to go, and wanted to serve. He loved the Army and his brothers and sisters in it. The loss is terrible and painful. I know. But know that you are not alone.

My deepest condolences to the family of this brave young man...too young to die. My heart grieves with you and I know your pain. We lost our precious son in Afghanistan almost one year ago and the pain hurts just as much today as it did when we first got the news. I wear my son's dog tags every day as a reminder to all that my son gave his life for their freedoms and also to keep something special of his close to my heart. In time they say the pain will fade, but for this Mom, I just don't know if it's possible. But when I do recall his infectious laugh and those beautiful blue eyes, I have a great reason to smile and remember. He was 31....too young to die. Remember all your wonderful memories...they will give you some strength. God Bless and comfort your family. I will keep you in my prayers.

To the Family of Cpl. Darrel J. Morris:
I will stand in grief with this soldier's family to honor him. For every fallen HERO there is a bright star that shines in the evening sky to remind us of the cherished gift we were given – even if for too short a time.
My heart breaks again as I sign yet another guest book of another courageous young soldier who gave their life so selflessly. I wish I never found myself in a position to have to sign another guestbook for the rest of my life, but I promised Brent that neither he nor any like him would be forgotten and so I will continue until the day there is no longer the need.
We lost our son SFC Brent A. Adams on 12/1/05 and it seems like yesterday. I wish so badly there were things I could say to you right now to make the pain you are feeling go away, but I know first hand there simply are no words that will bring you the comfort and peace your heart aches for. Just know that you are not alone. My heart, thoughts, and prayers are with you all as you go through this tragedy moment by moment and as you mourn this loss.
We don't know each other, will probably never meet, but will forever be united in the loss of our Heroes. We have, unfortunately joined a group none of us wanted to join, an ever-growing group of families in this situation. May God grant you peace and strength to get through this and be able once again to smile at a memory rather than have only the tears that flow so easily now. To be so proud of your loved one and so saddened at the same time is a mix of emotions very difficult to deal with as our hearts both burst with pride and pain together.
I am sorry that I never knew your soldier personally. While they can never be replaced, neither will they ever be forgotten. You must trust that sometime, someday the loving memories you have will help to sustain you and help you go on. This courageous soldier will forever be your Angel watching over you all for the rest of your lives. It's what brings me some measure of peace and comfort and I hope it will you as well.
To his family and friends in pain, I offer this comfort: When you find yourself in that dark sorrowful place, think not only of how you will miss him, but instead recall the years, days, hours and minutes gifted to you by his presence. The one thing that cannot be taken from you is your wonderful memories that now will mean more than ever.
If you ever want to talk, I'm only an e:mail away and would love for you to tell me more about your Hero.
God Bless this soldier and family who gave all and God Bless legacy.com for setting up this site where families can so quickly share their condolences and prayers with others like themselves.

My Deepest and most heartfelt sympathy goes out to the family of Cpl. Darrel J. Morris.
The price this Brave Young Marine and his family have paid for this country and for freedom, Will Never Be Forgotten.
There is so much thanks to be given, to these young heroes, for their Courage, Dedication and Service.

May Darrel rest safely in God's Care and may God's Loving Peace and Comfort be with the Morris family.
I am the sister of such a young hero, who made the Ultimate Sacrifice in Vietnam, many years ago.

"Wait on the Lord, be of good courage
and He shall strengthen your heart"
~ Psalm 27:14 ~

May the Peace of God and the memories of Darrel, remain in your heart always.
May this give you comfort and strength through the difficult days ahead.
~ Softly and slowly, time heals.~

Heaven's Call

Heaven called and you were taken
So young to go, to young to know

The call of heaven did not wait
Your time here a short stay
You were called away
To be part of God’s everlasting garden

Borrowed seed from the Master
A small little bud that graced us with your beauty
Now returned upon heaven’s call

A finely chosen rose
Taken before it bloomed
Before your beauty had time to unfold

He is the Gardner and you his prize winning bud
Perhaps He seen a storm that you could not with stand
So he picked you before the wind would fall

The memories forever etched in our hearts
Our little bud now blooms
With the angels up on high
