Hello,
We apologize for being so late in expressing our deepest condolences to you and your family. We want you to know that we will be sending Care Packages to deployed troops this holiday season and several of these will be dedicated to your loved one. Each package will carry the name, photo, service branch, rank and hometown of Randy Jay Matheny US Army Sergeant.
We realize that this is a small tribute, but we do this with all respect and sincerity and we want you to know that it is made possible by thousands of like-minded individuals from across the American youth hockey community, their families, friends and others who support our mission.
We will not forget. May God Bless you and keep you safe and strong.
Sincerely,
Charlie Gili & Family

I was looking through fallen soldiers when I came upon Randy. I didn't know him but for some reason the tears fell as I read what people wrote about him. I called my father back home in NE and just cried. I told him about how my heart is breaking for the family and friends of this young soldier. As I gave him the details I had read about Randy he didn't say much. When he did say something he told me that he had been at Randy's funeral. My fahter was one of the many veterans (AVMC) holding an American flag and helping keep the protestors at bay.
I just want you all to know that Randy is hero (I know you already know this). I will keep you in my prayers and thoughts.

I was stationed at TQ with Randy at the time of his death. I didn't know him well but remember him coming into the Internet Cafe smiling and wanting to use the phone. He seemed like a very nice, polite young man. The memorial at TQ was very moving and well done. Randy had a lot of friends and everyone respected him. I hope the rest of the 1074th made it home safe. Hope heaven is treating you well Randy, God Bless.

I deployed off the coast of Africa with the USS Nitze (DDG 94) when Randy died. Due to operational commitment i was unable to come home for the funeral. randy matheny was the brother i never had. when i trasferred to North Ward elementary school in the 4th grade the first 2 friends i made where Matt Gummere and Randy Matheny and from there we became the best of friends. The crew came to include friends like sean cappel, sean whitaker, kenny giron, and tom ortiz and so many many more. it's been over 6 months since he died and i still struggle knowing that everytime i come home to McCook he's not going to be there. randy was the biggest influence for the staying the Navy. there were times where i wanted to quit but he would always tell me to keep going and never give up. i took those words to heart and i will keep them there for the rest of my life. to my brother i love you man, i wish there was something i could have done to protect you man. i will do everything in my power to keep your memory alive. thank you for always being there for me when i felt like i didn't have anyone there. when my grandpa died you where there for me man and i thank you from the bottom of my heart. you gave me the support and friendship while i was in bootcamp, and while i was deployed. i thank God everyday that i was one of many people that could call you friend. i love you Randy.

There is nothing that I can say or do to take away the pain or bring you peace in your time of sorrow, but I will offer you and your family my heart felt condolences. I also offer you my prayers that in time the pain will easy and the memories of your HERO will carry you through each day and night. I want to thank your HERO, for his/her selfless act of becoming a member of the armed forces, his/her willingness to defend the United States of America, all that we hold sacred and for the sacrifice that will forever be etched in the memories of all those who knew him/her. Though tears can never bring him/her back, we hope that our tears express our gratitude for the sacrifice that he/she made and our sorrow at his/her passing. I believe for every fallen HERO there is a star shining brightly up above to remind us of the precious gift we were given.
Your mission on earth is complete and you are now a member of GOD’s Heavenly armed forces. Stand down brave warrior and take your rightful place in Heaven with all the HEROES who have passed before.
I made a special promise to LE RON A. WILSON, a dear family friend who joined the Army with three other friends, one of whom is my son (Le Ron was killed in action on 07/06/07 at the age of 18) on the day he was laid to rest as I touched his coffin, that I would never forget him nor would I forget those that gave their lives for our country before him, with him and after him and so when I came across www.legacy.com, I thought what a great way to keep my promise to Le Ron, so I will continue to leave tributes in each guest book until the day there is no longer the need to leave these tributes to a FALLEN HERO.

I just found out tonight about Randys death, and my heartfelt sympathy and prayers go out to all of the family. I just lost both of my parents in the last month and I know how hard it is to get beyond grief. Randys service to our country is greatly appreciated by everyone.

“Soldier”
Written to Honor the Service of Our Fallen Soldiers
Soldiers write history…they pay the price
Many miles distant, you live the life
Entered the Battle of our own free will
Out of Duty for Country, and we’d do it still
We hope and pray that all will find peace
In God, in the flag, in memories of valor
Gone now, our pride and courage you see
“An Army of One” our motto forever
Willing to risk all for love of our Brothers
We’re still Your Soldiers…and we showed the way
Our Lives too short, now pray for the others
Lived free died Heroes in lands far away
Deep within souls all cherished our Service
We’ll always have what some never know
Courage and Honor, our names forever
Lived life with purpose…just our time to go
We march in the Heavens with Honor and Glory
Missions accomplished we fought the Good Fight
Many years from now…we’ll tell the full story
Until that Day we will live in the Light
Our lives we laid down in a land far away
Still watching o’er you this night and by day
No need to talk…just know we are with you
There in your hearts and we hear what you pray
Yes we are your soldiers
Our lives we laid down
Still We guard o’er you
Still Duty bound
Entered the Battle of our own free will
Out of Duty for Country, and we’d do it still
We’ll always have what some never know
Lived life with purpose…it was our time to go

Randy is indeed an American Hero. He made the ultimate sacrifice for our great nation. He is now with the other Fallen Soldiers who are looking down on us and protecting us as best as they can.
Randy is with my son, Sgt. Joshua A.Ford who also was 20 when he was killed in Iraq by an IED. I am sure Randy was very proud to serve in the Nebraska Army National Guard just like Josh was. Our brave young men and women represent the best we have to offer and are willing to serve volunteerily.
Our pain will never go away. We will learn to live with our losses. We have to be brave and strong just as our Fallen Soldier was brave and strong in the face of the enemy.

To the family/friends of SGT Randy Matheny,
My brother was also killed in action 7/31/006. SGT Joshua A. Ford served with the NE Guard 189th TC unit from Wayne, NE. Please know I share your pain. My heart ached and tears fell hearing about Randy. Thought I never knew him, seeing his age and 20 and a huge smile on his face, brought back memories of my brother. Please take comfort in knowing he is up above with my brother watching over all us and their fellow soldiers. The pain and sorrow I know is great at the moment, but over time just hold on to the memories and joy you all shared and he will never truly leave you. He is a TRUE American Hero, and your family is as well. The sacrifices you, just as my family has had to make, is more than anyone should have to be asked to do I know, but our soldiers were proud and strong and that is what we must continue on for them. Please take care and if you ever need to talk I am only an email away. God bless you and god bless Randy.

To the Family and Friends of this Soldier:
I will stand in grief with this soldier's family to honor him. For every fallen HERO there is a bright star that shines in the evening sky to remind us of the cherished gift we were given – even if for too short a time.
My heart breaks again as I sign yet another guest book of another courageous young soldier who gave their life so selflessly. I wish I never found myself in a position to have to sign another guestbook for the rest of my life, but I promised Brent that neither he nor any like him would be forgotten and so I will continue until the day there is no longer the need.
We lost our son SFC Brent A. Adams on 12/1/05 and it seems like yesterday. I wish so badly there were things I could say to you right now to make the pain you are feeling go away, but I know first hand there simply are no words that will bring you the comfort and peace your heart aches for. Just know that you are not alone. My heart, thoughts, and prayers are with you all as you go through this tragedy moment by moment and as you mourn this loss.
We don't know each other, will probably never meet, but will forever be united in the loss of our Heroes. We have, unfortunately joined a group none of us wanted to join, an ever-growing group of families in this situation. May God grant you peace and strength to get through this and be able once again to smile at a memory rather than have only the tears that flow so easily now. To be so proud of your loved one and so saddened at the same time is a mix of emotions very difficult to deal with as our hearts both burst with pride and pain together.
I am sorry that I never knew your soldier personally. While they can never be replaced, neither will they ever be forgotten. You must trust that sometime, someday the loving memories you have will help to sustain you and help you go on. This courageous soldier will forever be your Angel watching over you all for the rest of your lives. It's what brings me some measure of peace and comfort and I hope it will you as well.
To his family and friends in pain, I offer this comfort: When you find yourself in that dark sorrowful place, think not only of how you will miss him, but instead recall the years, days, hours and minutes gifted to you by his presence. The one thing that cannot be taken from you is your wonderful memories that now will mean more than ever.
If you ever want to talk, I'm only an e:mail away and would love for you to tell me more about your Hero.
God Bless this soldier and family who gave all and God Bless legacy.com for setting up this site where families can so quickly share their condolences and prayers with others like themselves.
