Today May 24, 2024, I was handed Matthew's name to be honored at my workplace. We honor over 7000 soldiers every year for Memorial Day. I will honor Matthew who made the ultimate sacrifice in service to our country. Matthew has an outstanding story here. I extend my deepest gratitude to Matthew's sacrifice this Memorial Day and future Memorial days to come. Matthew is not forgotten.

My name is Jason aparicio. Matthew Conte was one of my best friends and a person that I did consider to me is more close as a brother. I've been searching for Matthew Conte or trying to get ahold of his mom and dad for all these years just to tell them that I missed them. I remember one time when he was going to go visit his mom and dad and his family in Ohio I didn't have nowhere to go so I decided to take a trip with him that was the first and most important thing I ever did but since he was a brother to me I decided to go his family is very wonderful and hope to see them or talk to them again and I swear that was the most wonderful time I ever had they made me feel as if I was a part of a family as a brother I love you and I miss you Matthew Conte well if the family wants to get a hold of me my number is (210)391-0467

I never got the chance to meet you. But my brother, Mike Watson, speaks very highly of you quite often.
Just today we were talking to a corpsman who serves in yours and my brother's old unit and your name came up.
I just wanted to say you're not forgotten. You are and will always be remembered.

Take care brother.

God Matt idk where to start.. Its been almost 10 years and not a day goes by I don't think of you.. I wish it was easier to look at a picture of you and not cry. I wish your nieces could have met you. God knows you would have spoiled them. Nevaeh askes about you and she knows you're her uncle in heaven watching her. She knows how you passed and she "misses" you even though she was born over 2 years later. Every year on your birthday and death date I cry. Never fails. You are one person I wish we didn't lose... I hope to see you in my dreams again soon. I really really miss you I love you too Matt.

I was looking at a photo we took in 2/3 today where Matt is front and center. So I decided to look for a memorial for him. I was deeply saddened when I'd heard of his passing, but hadn't written anything till today. I just want to let you know that even now many years later people who served with him, whose lives he touched, still remember him, and Always will.

Matt was my bestfriend at the start of Corps School, and we flew to Hawaii together.

After 6 years, it still is so weird of not hearing your voice. We had the best of times together. From skateboarding in Waikiki to just having our barracks sleepovers and talking about our favorite childhood memories, you were my home away from home. I love you bro. I'm living my life for you.

If anyone knows where Matt lies peacefully, please email me! [email protected]

I'd like to make a trip out to see him.

Thank you!

Hello,
We would like to express our deepest condolences and also let the Conte Family know that we recently sent Care Packages to American troops in the war zones. Each box carried a dedication sheet that includes the name, service information and a photo of your loved one. We recognize that this is a humble tribute, but we wanted you to know that it is heartfelt and made possible by thousands of like-minded individuals in the youth hockey community and beyond. We will not forget. May God Bless you and keep you strong.
Sincerely,
Charlie Gili & Family

I'm Justin Straus. HN Conte was my senior corpsman when we deployed to Iraq. I make sure everyone knows to this day that he taught me everything there is to know about being a doc. He was the best corpsman I've ever met, and loved what he did. I'm proud to have known Matthew Conte, and I know he is in a safe and peaceful place. I met his parents when we came home from Iraq, and we were able to give them a bible signed by our platoon that Matt used to have with him. To Matt's mom and dad, I hope you get the chance to see this, it was an honor having the chance to meet you, and I hope I get the chance to see you guys again. Doc Conte, you're always in my thoughts, take care and thank you for everything. You are most definitely missed.

No one knows why people come into their lives. Matt, we deployed to Iraq together but never came home together. I promised you that we would all come home, organic and HSAP. I failed in that promise and it haunts me to this day. You, Devin, and Joey will always be in my mind. From Baghdadi to Abu Hiatt to Haditha....2/3 Weapons Co became family. Miss you Man....

Matt,
I heard your mom speaking about you the other day and I know you did as well. I wish I had gotten to know you in person but will have to settle for others recollections of you.
My daughter was also a naval corpsman who was selected based on her skills to train with the marines. She was thrown back into the corpsman pool - I think because she was so small at 4'10" and 90 lbs. You were someone who made the cut and made a difference. Thank you! I will keep you, your family and your brothers in arms in my prayers. Rest easy Matt your job here is done but your heavenly duty has begun in earnest.

I never met Matthew, but I feel like I know him. You see, I have been working on a quilt for his Mom over the past year and 1/2, using photos given to me by Marie Fagan, who was Matthew's girlfriend at the time of his death.
I am almost finished and need an address of where to send the Memorial Quilt. It is time for the family to see and enjoy Matthew's smile and personality portrayed in these photos.
This is the most difficult thing I have ever done, because I have a son and making this quilt makes me feel like a part of Matthew's life. He fit a lifetime into 22 years and did what was important to him. Thank you Matthew.

My heart goes out to all of the family of Hospitalman Matthew Conte. I know this is a bit late, but still wanted to send my condolences. My son is a Hopsital Corpsman stationed at Camp Pendleton with the Marines. He has already done one deployment and may be going again soon. My husband and I both are former Corpsman and want you all to know you are in our thoughts. I am sure he was a wonderful son. I wish I could send a condolence to every family who has lost a love one. It truly breaks my heart.

I was Matt's supervisor and trained him over the years while he was in Hawaii. During our deployment to Iraq, that very morning he asked me if I needed anything (because I was always stuck in the field and couldn't pick up anything from the rear) I said your a life saver and handed him some money and he said don't worry about it. I smiled and laughed and told him you really are a good man, I appreciate it. Later that day the IED struck, I can't believe the feelings that went through us all. When we saw him, I don't know a single person who wasn't crying that day.
My prayers are always with Matt as I think about him and many others constantly. Best wishes to your family and Gods Speed.

My son was with you that fateful day. He carries the scars on the inside as well on the outside. He loves you like a brother and misses you terribly. He carries you close to his heart (a tattoo his mother finally understood and approved of...). I know that he cherished your friendship probably more than you knew. He admired you because you modeled for him how a man can be a warrior and still walk with Christ. I thank you for that. To the Conte family, I want you to know that I still keep you and Matthew in my prayers. Terry and I still speak of him. He is irrevocably a part of our lives. I wanted you to know that.
Respectfully,

Matthew, was the first man I ever loved. He meant so much to me, he still does. He made me the person I am today. I miss him terribly. There's not a day that goes by, that I don't think about him. He was such an amazing person. Even though his life here was brief, he made such a positive impact in everyones life who came to know him. Thank you for raising such a remarkable man. My life would not be what it is today without him!

There is nothing that I can say or do to take away the pain or bring you peace in your time of sorrow, but I will offer you and your family my heart felt condolences. I also offer you my prayers that in time the pain will easy and the memories of your HERO will carry you through each day and night. I want to thank your HERO, for his/her selfless act of becoming a member of the armed forces, his/her willingness to defend the United States of America, all that we hold sacred and for the sacrifice that will forever be etched in the memories of all those who knew him/her. Though tears can never bring him/her back, we hope that our tears express our gratitude for the sacrifice that he/she made and our sorrow at his/her passing. I believe for every fallen HERO there is a star shining brightly up above to remind us of the precious gift we were given.

Your mission on earth is complete and you are now a member of GOD’s Heavenly armed forces. Stand down brave warrior and take your rightful place in Heaven with all the HEROES who have passed before.

I made a special promise to LE RON A. WILSON, a dear family friend who joined the Army with three other friends, one of whom is my son (Le Ron was killed in action on 07/06/07 at the age of 18) on the day he was laid to rest as I touched his coffin, that I would never forget him nor would I forget those that gave their lives for our country before him, with him and after him and so when I came across www.legacy.com, I thought what a great way to keep my promise to Le Ron, so I will continue to leave tributes in each guest book until the day there is no longer the need to leave these tributes to a FALLEN HERO.

REST IN PEACE, HERO, YOU WILL NEVER BE FORGOTTEN!!

To All Parents
“I’ll lend you for a little time a child of Mine,” He said.
“For you to love the While he lives and mourn for when he’s dead.
It may be six or seven years, or 22 or three,
But will you, till I call him back, take care of him for me?
He’ll bring his charms to gladden you, and shall his stay be brief.
You’ll have his lovely memories as solace and relief.
“I cannot promise he will stay, since all from earth return,
But there are some lessons taught down there I want this child to learn.
I’ve looked the wide world over in my search for teachers true
And from the throngs that crowd life’s lanes I have selected you.
Now will you give him all your love, nor think the labor vain,
Nor hate Me when I come to take him back again?”
For all the joy Thy child shall bring, the risk of grief we’ll run.
We’ll shelter him with tenderness, we’ll love him while we may
And for the happiness we’ve known forever grateful stay;
But shall the angels call for him much sooner than we’ve planned.
We’ll brave the bitter grief that comes and try to understand.”

To The Conte Family,
I'm a Corpsman that served with Matt. He was always smiling, and giving me heck about how I walked, calling me "Lats" The morning he was killed, the guys in the COC came in and woke me up, telling me that a Corpsman had gone down. I don't know how to describe how I felt. Matt was a heck of a guy, and even though I didn't know him as well as I wanted to, I miss him. Thank you for bringing such a great guy into the world.

There are no words to express how sorry I am for your loss. Matthew is and always will be a true American Hero. I wish there were more men like him.
My best friend, Lucas Emch, was also a Corpsman stationed with the Marines. He was killed on March 2. It takes special men to do the job that they were doing so selflessly over there. May God bless your family and friends at this time. You will be in my prayers.

When Matthew was sent to Afghanistan back in 2005, he was "adopted" by me through the Adopt A Platoon organization. I sent him care packages, cards and letters. We never corresponded, but I know in my heart he appreciated everything I sent him. Once he was sent back to Hawaii, our adoption ended. I found out he was killed in action when another friend of ours was killed recently which we were verifying on a casualties webpage. I was shocked and very saddened to see that Matthew had been sent back to the Middle East, this time to Iraq obviously. When I saw his name on that list, my heart sank and I felt like I had lost a close friend. My heartfelt condolences go out to his family and friends. I hope you will all remember what a generous sacrifice Matthew made for us all and for the people of Iraq.

Lureen,Gale,Lora & Mike...I know no amount of time will ever truly heal the pain, but know that my prayers re with you now, and forever. Matt talked about you guys so much, and I'm sure you all knew just how much he loved yall...always remember that.

Matt....Your birthday is coming up, and I'm not sure that I am ready. You know I didn't get to celebrate last year, or see you before I left because I was always working. I wish now I would have taken just one day off to say goodbye when you left for Iraq. But, I know that even if we didn't get to see each other in the last year that you knew I cared! The friendship you gave to me means the world to me, and you will forever remain in my heart. Like I told you last year, I don't like saying goodbye to people, so I'll see you soon!!! Love you!!!

This poem is for ALL service members...not just Soldiers. Thank you for raising such a fine young man.

“Soldier”
Written to Honor the Service of Our Fallen Soldiers

Soldiers write history…they pay the price
Many miles distant, you live the life
Entered the Battle of our own free will
Out of Duty for Country, and we’d do it still

We hope and pray that all will find peace
In God, in the flag, in memories of valor
Gone now, our pride and courage you see
“An Army of One” our motto forever

Willing to risk all for love of our Brothers
We’re still Your Soldiers…and we showed the way
Our Lives too short, now pray for the others
Lived free died Heroes in lands far away

Deep within souls all cherished our Service
We’ll always have what some never know
Courage and Honor, our names forever
Lived life with purpose…just our time to go

We march in the Heavens with Honor and Glory
Missions accomplished we fought the Good Fight
Many years from now…we’ll tell the full story
Until that Day we will live in the Light

Our lives we laid down in a land far away
Still watching o’er you this night and by day
No need to talk…just know we are with you
There in your hearts and we hear what you pray

Yes we are your soldiers
Our lives we laid down
Still We guard o’er you
Still Duty bound

Entered the Battle of our own free will
Out of Duty for Country, and we’d do it still
We’ll always have what some never know
Lived life with purpose…it was our time to go

Be still like the grass on a melancholy summer day
Be still like desert shrub.

Be calm and you will hear your loved one speak, in the stillness, in the calm, their love resounds.

Matthew:
I stood at the corner of SR 91 and Howe Road today. The salute was to you "brother", welcome home finally. The Germans had a term for Marines, during the 1st World War at Belleau Wood. That was "Teufelhunden", meaning Devil Dog. Now we have a term for our blessed Corpmen. That is "Devil Doc", take no offense, but welcome home "Devil Doc".

Dearest Lureen, Gale, Lora, Michael,
We are deeply saddened by Matthew's passing, yet inspired by his life. He was always a dear child, but just look at the WONDERFUL young man he became-how many lives he impacted. I cannot imagine your grief. May your faith, love of each other, support from friends sustain you; may Matthew's life inspire yours and your children's; and, may you find peace. Sending you love and prayers. The Tomei Family-Jack, Jo-Ann, and Gina

Like Mathew I served as a Navy Hospital Corpsman during a time of War. While serving with the Marines in Viet Nam, I was rewarded with the knowledge that, If needed, I would sacrifice my safety to save the lives of my fellow Marines. Mathew made the ultimate sacrifice and will be forever remembered and revered by those he has left behind. May God bless you Mathew Gale Conte.
