Adare Cleveland Obituary

Anchorage resident Adare William Cleveland, 20, died on Feb. 19, 2007 in Baghdad, Iraq. A service, officiated by Stan Roach, will be held at 11 a.m. on Wednesday, Feb. 28 at Anchorage Baptist Temple. Military Honors will be at Ft. Richardson National Cemetery at 1:30 p.m. The public is welcome to attend. Adare was born on Jan. 14, 1987 in Ontario, Ore. He attended school at West High and Family Partnership, later joining the U.S. Army. Adare became a resident of Anchorage in September of 2000. He was employed at Carrs, Airline Support, Chilis Too, Thrifty Car Rental, and Qdoba during 2001- 2005. Mr. Cleveland was affiliated with Ore- Ida Judo Club as a youth, Boy Scouts, and the West High choir and band. He won awards for Student of the Month and Military awards. He enjoyed country music and ranching. His family wrote Adare could be a real charmer. As a child I used to take him to the airport to watch the planes and have a picnic. He had numerous friends including some of the homeless. He wanted to join APD. His first motivation for wanting to join was to be able to drive the cars fast. When he decided on the Army he chose the Cavalry as his great-grandfather and a favorite uncle had been Cavalry. Adare Cleveland is survived by his mother, Dianne Cleveland; father, William Simonds Jr.; grandmothers, Delores Palmer and Betty Simonds; sister, Maylyn Cleveland; aunt and uncle, Nikki and Lee Cleveland; surrogate mother, Esther Wehr; and numerous other aunts, uncles, and cousins. He was preceded in death by his brother, Robbie Cleveland. Memorial donations can be made to Disabled American Veterans, P.O. Box 14301, Cincinnati, OH 45250 or St. Judes. Hospital, 505 North Parkway, Memphis, Tennessee 38105. Local arrangements were provided by Witzleben Family Funeral Home and Crematory.

Fiddlers' Green

Fiddlers' Green is the legendary afterlife imagined by Cavalrymen. Its origins are obscure, although some point to the Greek myth of the “Elysian Fields” as a potential inspiration.

Halfway down the trail to Hell,
In a shady meadow green
Are the Souls of all dead troopers camped,
Near a good old-time canteen.
And this eternal resting place
Is known as Fiddlers' Green.
Marching past, straight through to Hell
The Infantry are seen.
Accompanied by the Engineers,
Artillery and Marines,
For none but the shades of Cavalrymen
Dismount at Fiddlers' Green.
Though some go curving down the trail
To seek a warmer scene.
No trooper ever gets to Hell
Ere he's emptied his canteen.
And so rides back to drink again
With friends at Fiddlers' Green.
And so when man and horse go down
Beneath a saber keen,
Or in a roaring charge of fierce melee
You stop a bullet clean,
And the hostiles come to get your scalp,
Just empty your canteen,
And put your pistol to your head
And go to Fiddlers' Green.

I was with Adare the day he died. I was in the truck with him when we were attacked. I am truly sorry for your loss. I loved him very much. He was a friend and a great soldier. I was the truck commander that day. I was injured, spent some days in a coma, and did not learn of my crews fate until I had recovered some from my injuries. I hope this note finds you with at least some closure. I know, from the many hours, days, and weeks I spent with your son, he died a hero fighting for what he believed and I truly miss my friend. He reminded me of a younger version of myself. I will be flying to Alaska on Friday May 9th. I would like to meet you and visit with you. I am not sure what to say, but maybe it would be good for both of us. Here is the arrival info.

Dear Dianne,
I wanted to write you a "real" letter, but since I don't have an address for you, this is the next best thing.
I met you at the Eyes Wide Open exhibit in Town Square last month. I was moved by your bravery in attending the event, and your willingness to share your memories of your son. Clearly he was a special and loved young man. I can't imagine the pain of losing a child; I don't know what sympathetic words I can say that others haven't already said. But I CAN tell you that today, Veterans Day, I am thinking of you and Adare, and thanking you both for your courage.
Warmly,
Connie Q.

The Cleveland Family

I am so sorry for your loss. I worked with Adare for only a short while. I hadn't realize he was in the service. He was a very kind person. I thank him deeply for serving our country and making the world a safer place for not only me but my children.

I pray for your family in your time of sorrow. May Adare be your angel.

If this person can stand in battle to ensure my freedom, then I will stand in grief with his/her family to honor him/her. For every fallen HERO there is a bright star that shines in the evening sky to remind us of the cherished gift we were given – even if for too short a time.
My heart breaks again as I sign yet another guest book of another courageous young soldier who gave their life so selflessly. I wish I never found myself in a position to have to sign another guestbook for the rest of my life, but I promised Le Ron A. Wilson (a dear friend KIA 7/6/07, 18yrs old) that neither he nor any like him would be forgotten and so I will continue until the day there is no longer the need.

It is with the deepest sadness that I ask the family and friends of a brave young Soldier Pfc. Adare Cleveland to accept the offer of my most sincere and heart felt condolences. I hope that you know that your loss is shared and mourned by millions of Americans. Most of whom you don’t know and in all probability will never meet. We sincerely appreciate the sacrifices made by your patriot.

Freedom is not free; it is paid for by our heroes, and for those who fight for it, Freedom has a flavor the protected will never know! This soldier made the ultimate sacrifice for our freedom.

I know the pain parents feel when they loose a child. I lost a son 19 years ago. It is a pain that defies description. It is a pain that never goes away. It is a pain that will never end. It is a pain that is all consuming.

I will keep you in my thoughts and prayers.

May God Bless and keep you today, tomorrow and forever!

Rest in Peace brave soldier; you did your duty with great honor, dedication, distinction and in the highest traditions of our great country.

To the Cleveland Family,
You don't know my family but my son PFC. Matthew Bowe was KIA with your son on Feb. 19th,2007. My son as well was 19 and we feel the same pain as you are feeling and no words can even begin to make things any better. We just buried our son on the 2nd and I still can't believe that we have lost our children who were filled with so much potential to suceed in life. I feel cheated out of so much as you probably do as well. People say it gets easier day by day but I don't see how when my heart has been torn out of my chest and the pain is unbareable. I know our sons are in a better place than where they were. If there is anything we can help with at all please let us know. We would love to hear from you. Our prayers are with your family during this difficult time.

“Soldier”
Written to Honor the Service of Our Fallen Soldiers

Soldiers write history…they pay the price
Many miles distant, you live the life
Entered the Battle of our own free will
Out of Duty for Country, and we’d do it still

We hope and pray that all will find peace
In God, in the flag, in memories of valor
Gone now, our pride and courage you see
“An Army of One” our motto forever

Willing to risk all for love of our Brothers
We’re still Your Soldiers…and we showed the way
Our Lives too short, now pray for the others
Lived free died Heroes in lands far away

Deep within souls all cherished our Service
We’ll always have what some never know
Courage and Honor, our names forever
Lived life with purpose…just our time to go

We march in the Heavens with Honor and Glory
Missions accomplished we fought the Good Fight
Many years from now…we’ll tell the full story
Until that Day we will live in the Light

Our lives we laid down in a land far away
Still watching o’er you this night and by day
No need to talk…just know we are with you
There in your hearts and we hear what you pray

Yes we are your soldiers
Our lives we laid down
Still We guard o’er you
Still Duty bound

Entered the Battle of our own free will
Out of Duty for Country, and we’d do it still
We’ll always have what some never know
Lived life with purpose…it was our time to go

GOD BLESS YOU MY FRIEND YOU HAVE EARNED YOUR WINGS IN HEAVEN

February 22, 2007

To the Family and Friends of this Soldier:
I will stand in grief with this soldier's family to honor him. For every fallen HERO there is a bright star that shines in the evening sky to remind us of the cherished gift we were given – even if for too short a time.
My heart breaks again as I sign yet another guest book of another courageous young soldier who gave their life so selflessly. I wish I never found myself in a position to have to sign another guestbook for the rest of my life, but I promised Brent that neither he nor any like him would be forgotten and so I will continue until the day there is no longer the need.
We lost our son SFC Brent A. Adams on 12/1/05 and it seems like yesterday. I wish so badly there were things I could say to you right now to make the pain you are feeling go away, but I know first hand there simply are no words that will bring you the comfort and peace your heart aches for. Just know that you are not alone. My heart, thoughts, and prayers are with you all as you go through this tragedy moment by moment and as you mourn this loss.
We don't know each other, will probably never meet, but will forever be united in the loss of our Heroes. We have, unfortunately joined a group none of us wanted to join, an ever-growing group of families in this situation. May God grant you peace and strength to get through this and be able once again to smile at a memory rather than have only the tears that flow so easily now. To be so proud of your loved one and so saddened at the same time is a mix of emotions very difficult to deal with as our hearts both burst with pride and pain together.
I am sorry that I never knew your soldier personally. While they can never be replaced, neither will they ever be forgotten. You must trust that sometime, someday the loving memories you have will help to sustain you and help you go on. This courageous soldier will forever be your Angel watching over you all for the rest of your lives. It's what brings me some measure of peace and comfort and I hope it will you as well.
To his family and friends in pain, I offer this comfort: When you find yourself in that dark sorrowful place, think not only of how you will miss him, but instead recall the years, days, hours and minutes gifted to you by his presence. The one thing that cannot be taken from you is your wonderful memories that now will mean more than ever.
If you ever want to talk, I'm only an e:mail away and would love for you to tell me more about your Hero.
God Bless this soldier and family who gave all and God Bless legacy.com for setting up this site where families can so quickly share their condolences and prayers with others like themselves.
