While on a recent trip to Boston I came across a tiny plastic bag that had a small stone with a penny attached to it. Inside the baggie was a note that said, " Army SPC Cameron K. Payne . Died 11, June 2007 (22) Hometown: Corona CA USA. Facebook Group: Service Stones". I located the group on facebook and posted a picture of his stone in the 2007 album. In this very special way Cameron's memory is still very much alive. Indeed he is not forgotten. One can view the stone that I found and the message that I left on the facebook group page called "service stones". I am honored to have learned about this hero, Mr. Payne. May he continue rest in peace and be remembered for his selfless bravery.

The Wind on The Downs

“I like to think of you as brown and tall,
As strong and living as you used to be,
In khaki tunic, Sam Brown belt and all,
And standing there and laughing down at me.
Because they tell me, dear, that you are dead,
Because I can no longer see your face,
You have not died, it is not true, instead
You seek adventure in some other place.
That you are round about me, I believe;
I hear you laughing as you used to do,
Yet loving all the things I think of you;
And knowing you are happy, should I grieve?
You follow and are watchful where I go.”

(Written by Marian Allen during World War l )

Two lines that I wish you to keep near your heart…….

“You seek adventure in some other place.
That you are round about me, I believe”

I did not know Cameron, but I am remembering
his service. He is my hero. !

The Other Side

i'm over on the other side
where life and death softly divide.
left my skin and bones behind
now i'm over on the other side.

can you feel me there with you?
my breath is gone but i'm not through.
loved you then and i still do
from over on the other side.

i can fly. really fly.
below the earth ... all through the sky.
tell em all i did not die.
i'm just over on the other side.

it's good here on the other side.
the sweetest songs...the bluest skies.
thank you for the tears you cried
but it's good here on the other side.

i can fly. really fly. below the earth...all through the sky.
tell em all i did not die.
i'm just over on the other side

the world is smaller than a needle's eye.
where life and death softly divide.
when you leave your skin and bones behind
i'll be waiting on the other side.

i can fly. really fly. below the earth ... all through the sky.
go tell em all i did not die.
i'm just over on the other side.

Cameron:
I can honestly say I knew you when. I knew you when you were the apple of your mother's eyes. I knew you when people would ooh and ahh over such a "cute little boy." I knew you when you thought your grandpa Jackson walked on water. I knew you when you swallowed a nickle and it was later discovered in one of your famously "fragrant diapers!" I knew you when I used to change those diapers. I knew you when you entered your teen years, and like many young people, had to find your own way. I knew you when you eventually found your way back. Then the years quickly slipped by and, young cousin, you became a man...and a very brave one at that.
What I also know Cameron is that everyone misses you very much.
God Bless, your cousin Kelly.

There is nothing that I can say or do to take away the pain or bring you peace in your time of sorrow, but I will offer you and your family my heart felt condolences. I also offer you my prayers that in time the pain will easy and the memories of your HERO will carry you through each day and night. I want to thank your HERO, for his/her selfless act of becoming a member of the armed forces, his/her willingness to defend the United States of America, all that we hold sacred and for the sacrifice that will forever be etched in the memories of all those who knew him/her. Though tears can never bring him/her back, we hope that our tears express our gratitude for the sacrifice that he/she made and our sorrow at his/her passing. I believe for every fallen HERO there is a star shining brightly up above to remind us of the precious gift we were given.

Your mission on earth is complete and you are now a member of GOD’s Heavenly armed forces. Stand down brave warrior and take your rightful place in Heaven with all the HEROES who have passed before.

I made a special promise to LE RON A. WILSON, a dear family friend who joined the Army with three other friends, one of whom is my son (Le Ron was killed in action on 07/06/07 at the age of 18) on the day he was laid to rest as I touched his coffin, that I would never forget him nor would I forget those that gave their lives for our country before him, with him and after him and so when I came across www.legacy.com, I thought what a great way to keep my promise to Le Ron, so I will continue to leave tributes in each guest book until the day there is no longer the need to leave these tributes to a FALLEN HERO.

REST IN PEACE, HERO, YOU WILL NEVER BE FORGOTTEN!!

Cameron,
You know you've always been very special to me- more like a son than a younger cousin. I recall the first time your dad, Robert, brought you to the Bay area; you had the biggest smile and the biggest head. As you grew you'd always say the wildest things but you always had heart and a soft spot for my daughter Moriah. Damn I miss you! I always believed that our family had a termendous bond. Although I some how thought I failed you these last three years, I'm overjoyed that you met the love of your life, Julie, and added to our family with your two beautiful little girls. I'm proud to hear of you as this great family man and your accomplishments for our country but I'm even more proud to have known you and had a history with you even before.

Cameron,
You are truly one of a kind. You may not have known, but in the short time we were able to spend together, you had an impact on me that will last forever. I admire your ability to light up a room with your humor/smile. Thank you for being a hero to all of us and God bless your family.

My Cousin, My friend and now my Gaurdian Angel...

Shelter me with you feathery wings,
Whisper all those loving things.
Hold me gently in your hands,
Until my heart really understands.
Guard me safely through the night,
Guide my path with the morning light.
Walk with me through stormy weather,
Let me know we're always together.
Guardian Angel please hear my plea.
Feel the bond between you and me.
I've heard your voice when I'm alone.
Through your touch my faith has grown.
I'm thankful God gave me you,
And your love pure and true!

It's no secret that I'll miss you, however I am so very glad that I have so many memories to hold onto. You weren't just a cousin to me you were like another brother. I still can hear your goofy/nervous laughter and some of your silly little sayings and jokes still ring through my head. One thing is for sure we will meet again, but until then I will make sure your memory will never fade. See you in my dreams and love you forever.

Cameron worked for me at Target in corona before he joined the army. He is one of the best Team Members to come through our doors. He was always full of life and would do any job that we needed done. He was such a cool guy and I wish I would have got to know him better but one day he joined the army and it was his last day at work. The short time that he worked there he had such an impact. We just found out this week that this happened. Everyone in our store who new him is upset. We all offer our condolences.

Good Morning son

It's been alsmost 5 weeks since you passed and went to heaven. Of course I still can't believe you're not comming home. But, you know Cameron my days with your daughter Anna make my days without you a little easier. When I'm with Anna it really is like being with you when you were just a little boy. Not only does Anna resemble you she also has so many of your characteristics. I know when I'm with Anna you are also around us. I can feel your presence. Please continue to watch over us. Son, I'm so proud of you and what you were able to accomplish in such a little amount of time. You really are a HERO to me. Not because you went to Iaq, but because you became a responsible adult and took care of your family. In the end you got what you have searched for so long.....LOVE. I will honor your memory and will be there for Julie, Annaleese and Kylee. Mommy misses you and loves you forever. Until we meet again my dear Cameron. Peace be with you and continue to watch over the troops from above.

My son, PFC Frank Hickman IV, was a friend of Cameron's and had the honor of attending the memorial service in Kansas and the funeral service in California. Frank was seriously wounded in Iraq, and I will never forget the night we received the call. I can't even begin to imagine the nightmare for Cameron's family. My son spoke highly of Cameron, and my heart truly goes out to his family. These young men are heroes and need to be remembered for their service, bravery, and unbelievable selflessness. Thank you, Cameron, for serving our country. God Bless the Payne family.

I went to basic training with Payne at F co. 2/58th. It was a shock when I found out what happened. He was one of the good guys in our platoon. Like I've read in some of the other guest book entries, funny funny guy. Always fun to be around. I couldn't imagine anyone else I'd like to spend 14 weeks with. I remember once he showed me the ultrasound picture of his child, he was so proud. I wish that I could say something that would be able to help the grieving family but I know words can't explain. I send my deepest sympathy for you.

To the friends and family members of PFC Cameron Payne I send my condolences at this time and pray that God will help you during this difficult journey through life. My son, PFC Brandon Wood also serves in Iraq in Delta Co 2/16. He shares your grief also. He told me today that your son "was the funniest guy in the company". A difficult task for young men serving in Iraq. I thank your son for serving our country and paying the ultimate price. I know that nothing I could say can help ease your pain at this time. Please keep his memory alive throughout your lives with the sharing of stories. If at some time you are interested, my son has forwarded pictures of Cameron to me and I would love to share them with you. I know for now it may be too difficult, but please don't hesitate to contact me if this is something you would like. God Bless Cameron and his family at this difficult time.

Do not stand at my grave and weep,
I am not there... I do not sleep.
I am the thousand winds that blow...
I am the diamond glints on snow...
I am the sunlight on ripened grain...
I am the gentle autumn rain.
When you waken in the morning's hush,
I am the swift uplifting rush
Of gentle birds in circling flight...
I am the soft star that shines at night.
Do not stand at my grave and cry-
I am not there... I did not die...

To Cameron's Family,

I am sorry for your tremendous loss, I hope you find great comfort in knowing that Cameron was a great soul. I went to school with Cameron up until High School. His radiant personality filled whatever room he walked into. He always knew exactly what to say or do to make people laugh. (Even if it meant eating a bee like Andrea said). I pray that God wraps his arms around your family and comforts you during this time. Cameron is now in a better place, and will always be looking down on his loved ones. Cameron thank you for fighting for our freedom, you are truly a Hero!

Last week, our son, Brian, called from FOB Rustamiyah at 3:00 AM to tell us that his best friend had been killed in action. His best friend was Cameron. They serve in the same platoon. We want you to know that Cameron and his whole family, especially his wife, Julie, and his two daughters, are constantly in our thoughts and prayers--and ALWAYS will be. Please know that you will always be a sister in the Delta Company family, and we will do anything we can to help you now and in the future. My husband was lucky to have known and worked with Cameron. To the Family and Friends of this Soldier:
I will stand in grief with this soldier's family to honor him. For every fallen HERO there is a bright star that shines in the evening sky to remind us of the cherished gift we were given – even if for too short a time.
My heart breaks again as I sign yet another guest book of another courageous young soldier who gave their life so selflessly. I wish I never found myself in a position to have to sign another guestbook for the rest of my life, but I promised Brent that neither he nor any like him would be forgotten and so I will continue until the day there is no longer the need.
We lost our son SFC Brent A. Adams on 12/1/05 and it seems like yesterday. I wish so badly there were things I could say to you right now to make the pain you are feeling go away, but I know first hand there simply are no words that will bring you the comfort and peace your heart aches for. Just know that you are not alone. My heart, thoughts, and prayers are with you all as you go through this tragedy moment by moment and as you mourn this loss.
We don't know each other, will probably never meet, but will forever be united in the loss of our Heroes. We have, unfortunately joined a group none of us wanted to join, an ever-growing group of families in this situation. May God grant you peace and strength to get through this and be able once again to smile at a memory rather than have only the tears that flow so easily now. To be so proud of your loved one and so saddened at the same time is a mix of emotions very difficult to deal with as our hearts both burst with pride and pain together.
I am sorry that I never knew your soldier personally. While they can never be replaced, neither will they ever be forgotten. You must trust that sometime, someday the loving memories you have will help to sustain you and help you go on. This courageous soldier will forever be your Angel watching over you all for the rest of your lives. It's what brings me some measure of peace and comfort and I hope it will you as well.
To his family and friends in pain, I offer this comfort: When you find yourself in that dark sorrowful place, think not only of how you will miss him, but instead recall the years, days, hours and minutes gifted to you by his presence. The one thing that cannot be taken from you is your wonderful memories that now will mean more than ever.
If you ever want to talk, I'm only an e:mail away and would love for you to tell me more about your Hero.
God Bless this soldier and family who gave all and God Bless legacy.com for setting up this site where families can so quickly share their condolences and prayers with others like themselves.
Proud Parents of SFC Brent A. Adams, KIA, 12/1/05, Ramadi, Iraq

Know in your heart that you are a true hero and will never be forgotten. All gave some, some gave all. Rest in peace. You will be missed by everyone’s life you have touched.

To the family, as the days and weeks pass, and as you return to life’s routine, may you continue to feel comforted by the love and support of family, friends, and all Americans for the sacrifice of one of your family members for our freedom. Our thoughts and prayers are with you. May you find comfort in the loving embrace of our Heavenly Father.
