As I watched the complete collapse of Afghanistan today, the implosion of everything we tried to do in Afghanistan, I thought about you and the other two angels by your side. I wish you would be alive today for your family to hug and treasure you. Your ultimate sacrifice was not in vain. Our country called for us and we answered. No matter the outcome, heaven help our Republic the next time we need brave souls and no one shows up. I think about you more than I should because anyone one of us could have died the way you passed from this earth. It hurts and I hope your family knows that our country is forever in your debt. A debt that can only be repaid in years. God Bless you forever.

Ten years ago this world lost a beautiful man LTC Richard Berrettini!! I had the honor and privilege to serve with him in Afghanistan. A man that had compassion, love, and service as his foundation. The care that this man gave to everyone was infectious. He was taken way too soon and the world became dimmer. May God continue to provide comfort to his wife and children during this day and may his love for humanity not be forgotten. RIP Brother!! Love and miss you!

Hello,
We would like to express our deepest condolences and also let the Berrettini Family and friends know that we will be sending Care Packages to troops in Afghanistan this week and we'll be dedicating several of these to your loved one. Each package will carry the name, photo and the hometown of Richard J. Berrettini US Army Lieutenant Colonel. We realize that this is a small tribute, but we do this with all respect and sincerity and we want you to know that it is made possible by thousands of like-minded individuals from across the American youth hockey community. We will not forget. May God Bless you and keep you strong.

Rich, It has been too long since you left us. Today is Memorial Day 2014 which makes it 6 1/2 years you've been gone and the world still hasn't, nor will it ever replace you. As a casual friend you were always cheerful and radiated that cheer to those around you. As a colleague, you were always the consummate professional caregiver. As an officer, you were a rebel. You knew that us medical providers can't and shouldn't be looked upon by the troops as they do the line officers, we are not there to lead them into combat but to be there when they are wounded or sick or think they have nowhere left to turn. I carried the same attitude with me through the rest of my career (probably why I retired as a Captain, with NO regrets).
I thought of you during my tour in Iraq and often I still think of you often for no real reason. Now that you are with the Lord, I am sure you are making him laugh and smile as well.
I thank you for all you did for our Nation and the US Military. I look forward that we will meet again. Rest in Peace my Brother, your tour of duty is over and we will always remember you.

It's so very hard to believe that it's been over 2 years since the great loss of a greater friend. Rich meant so much to so many people. I consider myself to be extremely lucky to have known Rich and his family. From being in cub scouts with Chris with Jane as our Den Leader, and all the fun times on the farm... to having to help Rich in the nurse's office for a period of time when I had run into some trouble. Rich was a great inspiration and someone that I along with many others looked up to as a role model. Rich will always be missed and in my thoughts. To Jane, Vincent and Christopher... you know that I'm only a phone call away should you ever need anything at all, and I mean ANYTHING!
With my most sincere prayers and wishes to the entire Berrettini family as they continue to miss this wonderful man,

I also cannot believe 1 year has passed since we lost LTC Berrettini, I think of him every day and am sad that he is gone, but I know in my heart he is in a better place. I know he is still watching over all of us. I just wanted to take a minute and tell his family once again that we truly appreciate the ultimate sacrifice he made for us. All who knew him couldn't help but love him because he was an exceptional man who cared about his fellow man and his fellow soldiers. Holding you all in my thoughts and prayers.
The Wind on The Downs
“I like to think of you as brown and tall,
As strong and living as you used to be,
In khaki tunic, Sam Brown belt and all,
And standing there and laughing down at me.
Because they tell me, dear, that you are dead,
Because I can no longer see your face,
You have not died, it is not true, instead
You seek adventure in some other place.
That you are round about me, I believe;
I hear you laughing as you used to do,
Yet loving all the things I think of you;
And knowing you are happy, should I grieve?
You follow and are watchful where I go.”
(Written by Marian Allen during World War l )
Two lines that I wish you to keep near your heart…….
“You seek adventure in some other place.
That you are round about me, I believe”
I did not know Richard, but I am remembering
his service and sacrifice. He is my hero. !

The Other Side
i'm over on the other side
where life and death softly divide.
left my skin and bones behind
now i'm over on the other side.
can you feel me there with you?
my breath is gone but i'm not through.
loved you then and i still do
from over on the other side.
i can fly. really fly.
below the earth ... all through the sky.
tell em all i did not die.
i'm just over on the other side.
it's good here on the other side.
the sweetest songs...the bluest skies.
thank you for the tears you cried
but it's good here on the other side.
i can fly. really fly. below the earth...all through the sky.
tell em all i did not die.
i'm just over on the other side
the world is smaller than a needle's eye.
where life and death softly divide.
when you leave your skin and bones behind
i'll be waiting on the other side.
i can fly. really fly. below the earth ... all through the sky.
go tell em all i did not die.
i'm just over on the other side.

LTC Berrettini was a man everyone could look up to. I only knew him for three short months. But, he was able to influence me medically and personally. He and I lived a long week in a conex at Camp Shelby; pulled an all night guard shift at the range; and numerous discussions over cigars. I will miss him.
I regret that I never met his family. He spoke of them often. I morn for their loss. Not only did he love his family, he loved his country. Genuine patriots are hard to find. Even more so when they are great leaders.
Rest in peace Col B, you will never be forgotten.

To my dearest family, some things I'd like to say...
but first of all, to let you know, that I arrived okay.
I'm writing this from heaven. Here I dwell with God above.
Here, there's no more tears of sadness; here is just eternal love.
Please do not be unhappy just because I'm out of sight.
Remember that I'm with you every morning, noon and night.
That day I had to leave you when my life on earth was through,
God picked me up and hugged me and He said, "I welcome you."
It's good to have you back again; you were missed while you were gone.
As for your dearest family, they'll be here later on.
I need you here badly; you're part of my plan.
There's so much that we have to do, to help our mortal man."
God gave me a list of things, that he wished for me to do.
And foremost on the list, was to watch and care for you.
And when you lie in bed at night, the day's chores put to flight.
God and I are closest to you....in the middle of the night.
When you think of my life on earth, and all those loving years
because you are only human, they are bound to bring you tears.
But do not be afraid to cry; it does relieve the pain.
Remember there would be no flowers, unless there was some rain.
I wish that I could tell you all that God has planned.
But if I were to tell you, you wouldn't understand.
But one thing is for certain, though my life on earth is o'er.
I'm closer to you now, than I ever was before.
There are many rocky roads ahead of you and many hills to climb;
but together we can do it by taking one day at a time.
It was always my philosophy and I'd like it for you too...
that as you give unto the world, the world will give to you.
If you can help somebody who's in sorrow and pain,
then you can say to God at night......"My day was not in vain."
And now I am contented....that my life has been worthwhile,
knowing as I passed along the way, I made somebody smile.
So if you meet somebody who is sad and feeling low,
just lend a hand to pick him up, as on your way you go.
When you're walking down the street, and you've got me on your mind;
I'm walking in your footsteps only half a step behind.
And when it's time for you to go.... from that body to be free,
remember you're not going.....you're coming here to me.

To the Family and Friends of this Soldier:
I will stand in grief with this soldier's family to honor him. For every fallen HERO there is a bright star that shines in the evening sky to remind us of the cherished gift we were given – even if for too short a time.
My heart breaks again as I sign yet another guest book of another courageous young soldier who gave their life so selflessly. I wish I never found myself in a position to have to sign another guestbook for the rest of my life, but I promised Brent that neither he nor any like him would be forgotten and so I will continue until the day there is no longer the need.
We lost our son SFC Brent A. Adams on 12/1/05 and it seems like yesterday. I wish so badly there were things I could say to you right now to make the pain you are feeling go away, but I know first hand there simply are no words that will bring you the comfort and peace your heart aches for. Just know that you are not alone. My heart, thoughts, and prayers are with you all as you go through this tragedy moment by moment and as you mourn this loss.
We don't know each other, will probably never meet, but will forever be united in the loss of our Heroes. We have, unfortunately joined a group none of us wanted to join, an ever-growing group of families in this situation. May God grant you peace and strength to get through this and be able once again to smile at a memory rather than have only the tears that flow so easily now. To be so proud of your loved one and so saddened at the same time is a mix of emotions very difficult to deal with as our hearts both burst with pride and pain together.
I am sorry that I never knew your soldier personally. While they can never be replaced, neither will they ever be forgotten. You must trust that sometime, someday the loving memories you have will help to sustain you and help you go on. This courageous soldier will forever be your Angel watching over you all for the rest of your lives. It's what brings me some measure of peace and comfort and I hope it will you as well.
To his family and friends in pain, I offer this comfort: When you find yourself in that dark sorrowful place, think not only of how you will miss him, but instead recall the years, days, hours and minutes gifted to you by his presence. The one thing that cannot be taken from you is your wonderful memories that now will mean more than ever.
If you ever want to talk, I'm only an e:mail away and would love for you to tell me more about your Hero.
God Bless this soldier and family who gave all and God Bless legacy.com for setting up this site where families can so quickly share their condolences and prayers with others like themselves.

Jane, Vince and Chris,
Almost a month has gone by since we received the horrific news about Rich. Hearing of his injuries, and then of his passing, were the two hardest faculty meetings I have had to go through in my short time here in Port. The halls of PAHS will never be the same.
Although I've only been here in town for a little over 6 years, Rich really did touch my heart. He was always there when I wasn't feeling quite well, and my mother's advice (who is also a nurse) just didn't seem to calm me. When my dad became ill, Rich was there to help me understand it all - once again, when my mother's advice or description just wasn't enough. When my dad passed away two and a half years ago, Rich was there to offer his support. That was just in his nature. Now, as God called Rich home, he was just doing what he did best - giving of himself.
Chris and Vince, I know how proud your dad was of you. He never would come right out and openly brag without some coaxing, but he truly was proud. I still remember the awards day when it was announced that Chris was accepted to the Academy. You could just see the glow on Rich's face.
I was humbled by the ceremony last week at the high school. Seeing all of you together reminded me of family. The closeness you all share will be the best therapy in the healing process. Although it will never erase the memories, it will help make coping with all of this that much easier. Please know that all of you hold a place in my heart, as well as the hearts of everyone that Rich has touched.
I know how hard it is let go of someone that has meant so much and was called to be in a better place way too early in life. But please know that I am here if you need ANYTHING at all - someone to talk to, someone to cry with, or anything at all.
I am sure my dad, and all of the other angels in heaven, were there at the gates saluting Rich as he entered into that safe and peaceful place. And knowing Rich, he cracked that quirky little smirk and asked them to stop.
God Bless!

To Mrs.B and the boys,
I had the privelage of getting to know Col.B during our mobilization in Camp Shelby. The first day I met him he made me smile and gave me the nick name Skittles because of the candy I was eating, and him explaining how bad it was for me. After that day I got to know him as a friend and he hated being called Col. He made our train up better by just being there. Mrs.B every time you sent him cookies he would open the box and share with anyone and everyone, we were all smiles because they were the best cookies ever. Col.B was the main officer that wanted to be treated just like the rest of us soldiers. He always trained with us, early mornings and late nights, sunshine or rain. He was all in all a wonderful person and brightened all of our days. I don't think I could have made it through without him there to keep us smiling and laughing. Col.B gave me hope when he talked about you, Mrs.B, and the boys, which on a number of occasions he mentioned that they were single and needed a good wife. I hoped one day to be able to brag like he did about my family. Mrs.B, your husband made such an impact on every life that he entered., he will never be forgotten. Just know that God is with you and your family and that Col.B is watching and would want us all to smile when we thought of him. I know that all of us in Charlie Company 163rd will always be grateful for the things he did for us and the hard times he helped us through. If there is ever anything that I can do for you feel free to contact me. Keep your heads up, you all will be in my prayers!

There is nothing that I can say or do to take away the pain or bring you peace in your time of sorrow, but I will offer you and your family my heart felt condolences. I also offer you my prayers that in time the pain will easy and the memories of your HERO will carry you through each day and night. I want to thank your HERO, for his/her selfless act of becoming a member of the armed forces, his/her willingness to defend the United States of America, all that we hold sacred and for the sacrifice that will forever be etched in the memories of all those who knew him/her. Though tears can never bring him/her back, we hope that our tears express our gratitude for the sacrifice that he/she made and our sorrow at his/her passing. I believe for every fallen HERO there is a star shining brightly up above to remind us of the precious gift we were given.
Your mission on earth is complete and you are now a member of GOD’s Heavenly armed forces. Stand down brave warrior and take your rightful place in Heaven with all the HEROES who have passed before.
I made a special promise to LE RON A. WILSON, a dear family friend who joined the Army with three other friends, one of whom is my son (Le Ron was killed in action on 07/06/07 at the age of 18) on the day he was laid to rest as I touched his coffin, that I would never forget him nor would I forget those that gave their lives for our country before him, with him and after him and so when I came across www.legacy.com, I thought what a great way to keep my promise to Le Ron, so I will continue to leave tributes in each guest book until the day there is no longer the need to leave these tributes to a FALLEN HERO.
REST IN PEACE, HERO, YOU WILL NEVER BE FORGOTTEN!!
I would also like to tell you about a website, http://groups.msn.com/SSPSoldierPor
traits/homepage,
where some wonderful people will make wood portraits of your fallen Hero for free for the immediate family. I became aware of this site when I wanted to do something special for Le Ron’s mother.

Thank you to the Berrettini family for giving an amazing gift to those of us at home that get up every day and lead our lives in freedom. We often fail to realize that there are families grieving the loss of a soldier, and that the soldier was trying to ensure that we would not have to feel the same loss.

Dear Jane and family,
I worked with Rich when he was with the McKean County VNA & Hospice department of BRMC. He "delivered door to door " home health care and how the little ladies in the county would brighten up as he came to their homes!!! Later, my husband got to meet Rich over conversations about the farm and electric fences. Rich has shared his gifts in McKean County and in Pennsylvania and now , for peace sake, with all the world. Thank you for helping him be all of this to all of us. Call if there is anything that we can do for you.
Sincerely, Linda and Jim Wankel

Dear Jane and kids,
My deepest symphathy for you and your boys in the loss Rich. I met Rich years ago when he worked at BRMC. He was the greatest Nurse and person I every met. I was just a x-ray tech and worked nights with Rich, he taught me so much about patient care and nursing and how to treat people. He was a one of kind. He always made the learning process fun. I can still remember his laugh and the crazy music that he liked to listen to. I was so devistated to hear of his death. This country has truly lost one of the great ones. Your family is in my thoughts and prayers.

Doc B,
Mornings here at the screening cell haven't been the same without you stopping by for a cup of tea or coffee. I miss the conversations Najib, Lou you and I had about our families and talking about PA.
It didn't matter if we were talking about this or that, eating TastyKakes or you sharing some of the baked goodies (peanutbutter pecan pie and breads all vaccum sealed) from MRS. B, being around you always made me feel a little closer to PA/home.
Your smile, wit and charm have been deeply missed by all. We still have the coffee you brought down here. Najib and I haven't been able to drink it cause it's just not the same without you. I still find myself hoping that i will here a knock at the door and Shawn and you will be standing there.
My heart goes out to your family. Knowing how you have touched us here in the Screening Cell in less than a year I cannot begin to imagine how they feel.
Mrs. B,
As the card said at the hospital please call us if there is anything we can do or anything that you need.

Jane and boys,
Please accept our deepest sympathy during your time of sorrow. I worked with Rich at the school and everyone looked up to him. I remember when the kids would stop in his office just to say hello, for advise, or maybe for the praise some needed. He always had a way of making everyone smile. Rich touched so many lives all over the world. I hope time will mend your broken hearts and may you find peace in all your wonderful memories of Rich.

Mrs. B and Sons,
I just want to tell you how sorry I am for you loss, and to let you know a little bit of the way your family touched my life. I met Col. B when we were both attached to Charlie Company and sent to Camp Shelby. From the first day Col. B arrived he made our deployment a lot more tolerable than it would have been without him. He was always ready to make us laugh when we were sad, and to cheer us up when we were lonely. Col. B always had an encouraging word to share, and his soldiers ALWAYS knew that he genuinely cared about us. He was quick to let us know when we could improve something we were doing, and even quicker to praise us for doing a job well. When we felt like no one else in our chain of command truly listened to us, we knew that we had a constant supporter in Col. B. Mrs. B, your husband spoke of you constantly (usually about something new you bought and ribbed him about), and would always share the (great!) cookies you'd send him. He was incredibly proud of your boys, and would constantly tell us that he was looking for wives as great as they were to pair them with. There were many days when the only smiles some of us smiled were because of Col. B. I know that you will miss your husband and father. Nothing we can say will make that any better. I just want you to know that we will miss him as well. I am deeply grieved that your family has had to make such a terrible sacrifice. I am also more hurt than I can express that someone that served so diligently as a voice for soldiers that would not have otherwise had one has passed on. Your loss is truly one that we feel deeply, for it is our loss as well. My family and I will continue to keep your family in our prayers, and continue to ask God to give you the strength you need to face the coming days without your husband and father.
God Bless, and I pray your family is able to find some comfort in knowing that ten-thousand miles away we are grieving with you.

I had the pleasure of being deployed with LTC. B and working with him from February 07 until his death. A great sadness spread throughout this base because we were all hoping and praying that he would pull through. Our TMC staff called him "Italian Stallion" because he was a small man with a lot of heart. He spoke of his family often. We loved him like he was our father...always keeping us in line. I miss him so much. To Jane, Vinny, and Chris, I will continue to pray for your strength. I know that it's hard to go on without him but God will help you pull through this. If you need me for anything, please feel free to contact me. Again, my thoughts and prayers are with you all.

Dearest Jane,Vince,Chris and to all the Berrettini Family,
Rich became one of the best friends I ever had in life since my first day of high school began.
We shared home room every year and for all 4 years his locker was right next to mine. Lucky for me, Rich had to open it at least 75% of the time in all 4 years. He was an honorable teenager, someone you could tell your deepest secrets to and know that for sure, Rich was on your side. I seen him on occasion after graduation but after so many years unfortunately you do loose touch.
Rich prooved himself in life to never loose the honor he had and to go forward to truly be an
Officer and a Gentleman. My heart will forever be broken over my good friend being taken away from this world way before his time.
I hope I can have the honor to meet up with him again in the realms of another place in time.
Eternal Peace Rich and Thank You for all you did to help me in life,
Mair

To all that are free,
I always wondered how he smiled so much, no matter what the day was like. We were friends since grade school and though life's journey separated us after high school I still considerd him a friend. After all he was a Browntowner and that friendship bond formed as playground friends could never be broken. Well Browntown became a little smaller today and I lost a great childhood friend. For the first time in my life I realized that freedom wasn't easily had and wasn't free. As I mourn his loss, my thoughts return to that playground and to that never ending smile.
To Jane, his sons and mom, and to Nello another friend, please accept my deepest sympathies. Words can not espress my sadness. And to my friend Richie, may you rest in peace knowing you will always be remembered.

Jane, Vinnie, & Chris,
Our thoughts and prayers are with you at this time. I'm sure none of you realize just how much Rich has been a factor in our lives - he touched us all!
Ben was devastated to learn what happened and really tried to make it up north. As you all know, the military is not that forgiving, and Ben couldn't get leave to come lend his support; He desparately wanted to be there for Chris.
They say time heals the heart, but it's hard to imagine that ever happening, but the 23rd Psalm helps sooth the hurt. Please
just know that if you ever need anything or just want to "vent" we are here for you! The entire Bockoras family is thinking of you and yours!

To the Berrettini Family,
Please accept my condolences on the loss if Rich. I had the priviledge and honor to work with him as an Assistant Scoutmaster in Troop 560 in Port Allegany quite a few years ago. Seldom in life do you meet someone with true integrity and heart, Rich was one of those few.
I know he went to Afghanistan to make a difference, just like the difference he has made in the Port Allegany School District, and I know he succeeded in his effort. May he rest in peace.
My thoughts and prayers are with you. God Bless.
