Hello,
We realize that we are very late to express our deepest condolences, but we wanted to let your family and friends know that we will be sending Care Packages to deployed troops this week and several of these will be dedicated to your loved one. Each package will carry the name, photo and hometown of Matthew I. Pionk US Army Sergeant 1st Class.
We realize that this is a small tribute, but we do this with all respect and sincerity and we want you to know that it is made possible by thousands of like-minded individuals from across the American youth hockey community, their families and friends and others who support our mission.
We will not forget. May God Bless you and keep you safe and strong.
Sincerely,

I'm remembering Matt on the 12th anniversary of his passing. He was my best childhood friend between the ages of 10 and 14 before I moved away and his memory will always be with me. To his family, and especially to his children whom I never had the pleasure to meet; know that your father was one of greatest and most honorable men that I have ever known. He was a true friend who could always be counted on. We had many adventures in and around our hometown of Oliver and even as a young boy one could see that Matt was special; genuinely kind and caring toward others. When his dog Brownie died, Matt carried him all the way home in his arms over a mile. So many memories. I will always miss him.

Matt, its been along time since we knew one anotber. I hope you are at peace watching over all who loved you. Thanks for the Express Lube memories, and Wyotech days. You were a great guy. If it wasn't for you, I would have never went to Wyotech. Thanks again Matt, for being a truly down to earth friend.

To the family of Sgt. 1st Class Matthew I. Pionk:
The Fort Snelling Memorial Chapel Foundation will be honoring your loved one at the non-denominational Christian Memorial Day Remembrance worship service at 11:00 a.m. on Sunday, 26 May 2013. We will remember the casualties of the Global War on Terrorism from Minnesota … and the bordering states of Iowa, North Dakota, South Dakota and Wisconsin. Outside of the historic Fort Snelling Veterans Memorial Chapel will be a “Memorial Garden” filled with some 300 white crosses bearing the names of the war dead … including your loved one.
The Memorial Garden will be encircled with larger white crosses representing all of the wars of our nation's history and give honor to all who have served in the United States Armed Forces and made the ultimate sacrifice for the freedoms we enjoy today. Wreaths will be placed at the foot of each 8-foot cross bearing the number of U.S. Service Members killed in each of America's conflicts.
I would like to extend to your family an invitation to honor us with your presence at worship as we pay tribute to the sacrifice made by your service member and family. Our pastor, Kenneth L. Beale, Jr., will preach a message entitled, “Freedom:Free, but Costly.” At the conclusion of the worship hour, all of the congregation will be invited to silently pay their respects at the garden and there place poppies at each of the crosses. A Memorial Rifle Squad of the Fort Snelling National Cemetery will fire vollies as the US flag is lowered to half-staff and Taps is played. Following your visit to the Memorial Garden, your family is invited to attend an informal reception (weather permitting) outside of the Chapel. The Memorial Garden will remain until 5:00 p.m. on Monday, 27 May (Memorial Day).
As this Christian worship service has traditionally been well attended, we would be happy to reserve seating for you and yours. To do so, kindly call (651/286-7296) and leave a voice message indicating your veterans' name and the number of persons attending. For more information about the Foundation or driving directions to the historic chapel at Fort Snelling, visit our website at: www.fortsnellingmcf.org Special rates for nearby hotels will be available. For more information call (651/286-7296) or email the office ([email protected]) and leave your name and contact information.
Also, beginning at dusk (8:30 p.m.) on Saturday 25 May through dawn (6:30 a.m.) on Sunday, 26 May, a “Prayer Vigil for Peace” will be held in the sanctuary of the Chapel. You are invited to stop by, light a candle and place it at the foot of your loved one's cross in the Memorial Garden … and then enter the Chapel for prayer.
If you are not able to attend, we pray that you would find comfort in knowing that our prayers are with you and all of the fallen heroes.
Respectfully,

In Memory of Matthew ~ (Debra Estep)
January 11, 2009
Holding you all in my thoughts and prayers.
The Wind on The Downs
“I like to think of you as brown and tall,
As strong and living as you used to be,
In khaki tunic, Sam Brown belt and all,
And standing there and laughing down at me.
Because they tell me, dear, that you are dead,
Because I can no longer see your face,
You have not died, it is not true, instead
You seek adventure in some other place.
That you are round about me, I believe;
I hear you laughing as you used to do,
Yet loving all the things I think of you;
And knowing you are happy, should I grieve?
You follow and are watchful where I go.”
(Written by Marian Allen during World War l )
Two lines that I wish you to keep near your heart…….
“You seek adventure in some other place.
That you are round about me, I believe”
I did not know Matthew, but I am remembering
his service and sacrifice. He is my hero. !

The Other Side
i'm over on the other side
where life and death softly divide.
left my skin and bones behind
now i'm over on the other side.
can you feel me there with you?
my breath is gone but i'm not through.
loved you then and i still do
from over on the other side.
i can fly. really fly.
below the earth ... all through the sky.
tell em all i did not die.
i'm just over on the other side.
it's good here on the other side.
the sweetest songs...the bluest skies.
thank you for the tears you cried
but it's good here on the other side.
i can fly. really fly. below the earth...all through the sky.
tell em all i did not die.
i'm just over on the other side
the world is smaller than a needle's eye.
where life and death softly divide.
when you leave your skin and bones behind
i'll be waiting on the other side.
i can fly. really fly. below the earth ... all through the sky.
go tell em all i did not die.
i'm just over on the other side.

I know there are no words to say, except how sorry I am for your loss. May you hold Matthews' memory in your heart and please remember he shall never be forgotten.
...For you every single soldier
Those who served so honorable
Your life was forever altered
While I’m home safe and free
I stand with grateful admiration
I stand respectful and so proud
I know I’m only a civilian
And I don’t even know if it’s allowed.
But I salute you; allow me the honor
to salute you with permission let me say
Even though I hold no rank know that from my heart
My humble gratitude comes from the deepest part.
I salute you.

To the Family and Friends of this Soldier:
I will stand in grief with this soldier's family to honor him. For every fallen HERO there is a bright star that shines in the evening sky to remind us of the cherished gift we were given – even if for too short a time.
My heart breaks again as I sign yet another guest book of another courageous young soldier who gave their life so selflessly. I wish I never found myself in a position to have to sign another guestbook for the rest of my life, but I promised Brent that neither he nor any like him would be forgotten and so I will continue until the day there is no longer the need.
We lost our son SFC Brent A. Adams on 12/1/05 and it seems like yesterday. I wish so badly there were things I could say to you right now to make the pain you are feeling go away, but I know first hand there simply are no words that will bring you the comfort and peace your heart aches for. Just know that you are not alone. My heart, thoughts, and prayers are with you all as you go through this tragedy moment by moment and as you mourn this loss.
We don't know each other, will probably never meet, but will forever be united in the loss of our Heroes. We have, unfortunately joined a group none of us wanted to join, an ever-growing group of families in this situation. May God grant you peace and strength to get through this and be able once again to smile at a memory rather than have only the tears that flow so easily now. To be so proud of your loved one and so saddened at the same time is a mix of emotions very difficult to deal with as our hearts both burst with pride and pain together.
I am sorry that I never knew your soldier personally. While they can never be replaced, neither will they ever be forgotten. You must trust that sometime, someday the loving memories you have will help to sustain you and help you go on. This courageous soldier will forever be your Angel watching over you all for the rest of your lives. It's what brings me some measure of peace and comfort and I hope it will you as well.
To his family and friends in pain, I offer this comfort: When you find yourself in that dark sorrowful place, think not only of how you will miss him, but instead recall the years, days, hours and minutes gifted to you by his presence. The one thing that cannot be taken from you is your wonderful memories that now will mean more than ever.
If you ever want to talk, I'm only an e:mail away and would love for you to tell me more about your Hero.
God Bless this soldier and family who gave all and God Bless legacy.com for setting up this site where families can so quickly share their condolences and prayers with others like themselves.

“For we know that if our earthly house, this tent, is destroyed, we have a building from God, a house not made with hands, eternal in the heavens.” 2 Corinthians 5:1 (NKJV)
The coffin, housing the “tent” in which your dear son once resided, was placed on the funeral bier. In the background, you heard the gun salute followed by “Taps.” Most of us have heard this tune. However, few are aware of the words that go with this most familiar melody. Here are the words as they are known to me. (There are many variations.):
TAPS
Day is done, gone the sun,
From the hills, from the lakes, from the sky.
All is well, safely rest, God is nigh.
Go to sleep, peaceful sleep,
May the soldier or sailor,
God keep.
On the land or the deep,
Safe in sleep.
Love, good night, Must thou go,
When the day, And the night
Need thee so?
All is well. Speedeth all
To their rest.
Thanks and praise, For our days,
'Neath the sun, Neath the stars,
'Neath the sky,
As we go, This we know,
God is nigh.
Your dear son’s “tent” has been destroyed. But, as the Apostle Paul said in 2 Cor. 5:1, God has a better plan for us. The “tent” that once housed your precious son’s soul has been replaced by something far better than a “tent.” It is a building not made with hands.
On this earth, your soldier’s duty and day is done BUT, “All is well, safely rest, God is nigh… As we go, This we know, God is nigh.” Thank you for your son’s service.

Rest In Peace Sgt. 1st Class Matthew I Pionk
January 28, 2008
There is nothing that I can say or do to take away the pain or bring you peace in your time of sorrow, but I will offer you and your family my heart felt condolences. I also offer you my prayers that in time the pain will easy and the memories of your HERO will carry you through each day and night. I want to thank your HERO, for his/her selfless act of becoming a member of the armed forces, his/her willingness to defend the United States of America, all that we hold sacred and for the sacrifice that will forever be etched in the memories of all those who knew him/her. Though tears can never bring him/her back, we hope that our tears express our gratitude for the sacrifice that he/she made and our sorrow at his/her passing. I believe for every fallen HERO there is a star shining brightly up above to remind us of the precious gift we were given.
Your mission on earth is complete and you are now a member of GOD’s Heavenly armed forces. Stand down brave warrior and take your rightful place in Heaven with all the HEROES who have passed before.
I made a special promise to LE RON A. WILSON, a dear family friend who joined the Army with three other friends, one of whom is my son (Le Ron was killed in action on 07/06/07 at the age of 18) on the day he was laid to rest as I touched his coffin, that I would never forget him nor would I forget those that gave their lives for our country before him, with him and after him and so when I came across www.legacy.com, I thought what a great way to keep my promise to Le Ron, so I will continue to leave tributes in each guest book until the day there is no longer the need to leave these tributes to a FALLEN HERO.
REST IN PEACE, HERO, YOU WILL NEVER BE FORGOTTEN!!
I would also like to tell you about a website, http://groups.msn.com/SSPSoldierPor
traits/homepage,
where some wonderful people will make wood portraits of your fallen Hero for free for the immediate family. I became aware of this site when I wanted to do something special for Le Ron’s mother.

To the family of Matthew Pionk,
I know what you are going through right now. My nephew Christopher Sanders was killed with Matthew. I've heard several nice things about him. He was in a few of Christopher's pictures. My heart is so saddened and lost because of this horrific tragedy, so I can honestly say I know your pain. I hope you will be able to find peace again one day. Just know that you are not alone. You have a brave man that gave his life for our freedom. My prayers are with you!!

Melanie: We never know when the knock on the door will come. My greatest wish is that it never came for you. I know that you are going to be strong for your kids, but if you ever need someone to be strong for you, just ask. Matt was a sweet, funny, beer-loving guy. I know he was a soldier, but I'll always remember him as a friend. Peace and Love to you & yours.

Duane, Sandy, Melanie and your most precious family. Our deepest sympathy is extended to you at this most difficult time in your life. God never said it was going to be easy did He? Sometimes we wonder why such tragedies happen to some and not others. Maybe someday we will understand. Just know that Matthew was well loved, an accomplished individual, loving and kind in all that he did; most of all a wonderful son, husband, father, brother and uncle. It sounds by all the words that were written in Matthew's guest book that he is a Super Hero in everyone's eyes. Keep all those memories close forever. We are so sorry we could not be with you today but with the cold David didn't dare go out. David remembered working with Matthew at Kerrick Sod and he said he was such a kind and fun person to work with. Dave really enjoyed him. We just wanted to let you know you are in our prayers.
May God be with you always.

Melanie and family. Neither I nor my wife had the pleasure of meeting the fine young man who became your husband and father. But we are the parents of an infantryman, a helicopter pilot, and a flight medic. Our family has found wisdom in the words that “They also serve who stand and wait.” As a military family, we simply wanted to say that we share in your loss in some small way, and that we tearfully join a grateful country in gratitude and pride for Matthew’s courage to have made the greatest of sacrifices for all of us.

I am Matt's first cousin. I babysat him as a baby/youngster and then worked with him for a few seasons at Kerrick Sod, where we had long talks and I came to know him as..........just the Most Precious Person. His joy was contagious and he loved family gatherings. He loved his family.
Duane & Sandy along with the Nace family, should be so proud for nurturing and raising a most amazing young man. I could always see the bond and strength of their family unit. What a gift for Matt and his own children and Melanie. A legacy never lost. I loved Matt. I will miss his good and fun loving nature. I believe we will meet again and enjoy each other for eternity.....I hope this belief carries all of his family through this most grievous suffering. God's Comfort and Peace. Much Love. HOOHAH to you SFC Matthew I. Pionk!!!
Ruth and I offer our heartfelt condolences to your family!
As a Father of a Soldier KIA, I only wish I could convey to you how I feel about your loss. I have this HUGE lump in my throat as I write this.
I didn't know Matt, but he was my Daughter's Brother-in-Arms, which makes him my son/brother and all of you our extended family.
Like many others, my Daughter Cpl Rachael L Hugo, USAR; Combat Medic, was KIA in Iraq too.
I WILL NOT allow those who took our loved ones away from us see me grieve. This is what "They want us to do." I will instead let them see me work, as hard as I can, to help those Soldiers that Matt, Rach, and ALL our Fallen Hero's left behind. I promised Rach that I would do this, and I keep my promises!
These brave men and women fought and/or died for us and our Freedoms, as the Soldiers before them have done.
Thank you & may God bless each and everyone of you and your families!
"Stand down SFC Matthew I. Pionk, your misson is now complete"
It is now our turn to do our best to repay that which can NEVER be repaid!!!
Folks, if there is ANYTHING you need, a shoulder to cry on perhaps, we are only an email away.

SFC Pionk was an exceptional NCO, Leader, Soldier, and Father. I had the distinct pleasure of serving with him when he was a Private First Class. He stood out amongst his fellow Soldiers and was hand picked to serve in positions of greater responsibility. Over the years I was always proud to hear that SFC Pionk had made such an impact on all of those around him. I would like to pass along my thoughts and prayers to the Pionk Family.

Father we entrust our brother Matthew to your mercy. You loved him greatly in this life: now that he is freed from all its cares, give him happiness and peace forever. Welcome him now into paradise where there will be no more sorrow, no more weeping or pain, but only peace and joy with Jesus your Son, and the Holy Spirit forever and ever.
May God hold Matthew in the palm of His hand. My thoughts and prayers are with you and your family. My deepest sympathy.

With the deepest regret, I have just learned of the death of Sergeant First Class Pionk. As a Vietnam Veteran and the State Chaplain of the Georgia Society, Sons Of The American Revolution, I speak for our President, Charlie A. Newcomer, III and the more than 1,400 SAR members around the State of Georgia in humbly expressing the condolences of a grateful Society. Wrapped in the integrity of service to our nation and the inestimable values of duty, honor and country, your American hero stood on a wall of freedom for us all. This precious life, lived and lost in love of America, epitomized every attribute of patriotism the Sons Of The American Revolution hold dear. And, as Americans, we could never repay the debt we owe ..!! Nor the debt we owe you… the family of one of America's best ...!!!

My deepest empathy to Matthew's family and friends. Below is a poem that I hope will ease the burden of grief in knowing that Matthew is not far...will never be forgotten...and will forever be in our hearts.
THE NEXT ROOM
Death is nothing at all...I have only slipped away into the next room. I am I, and you are you. Whatever we were to each other, that we still are. Call me by my old familiar name, speak to me in the easy way which you always used. Put no difference in your tone, wear no forced air of solemnity or sorrow. Laugh as we always laughed at the little jokes we enjoyed together. Pray, smile, think of me - let my name be ever the household word that I always was, let it be spoken without effect, without the trace of a shadow on it. Life means all that it every meant. It is the same as it ever was, there is unbroken continuity. Why should I be out of mind because I am out of sight? I am waiting for you, for an interval, somewhere very near, just round the corner. All is well.

My deepest and most heartfelt condolences go out to Seargent Pionks' wife and children. The world is a smaller place without him in it.Words can never express how thankful I and many others are for his service and dedication to his family and country. He wanted you to be safe and free...he wanted his children to live as free as he did and because of his dedication and love we all benefited greatly.
A brave and honorable man he was...an example to be followed...his Brothers looked up to him...I spoke with a one of his Brothers that served with him during his first tour of duty and he said the following, "He was the model father and husband. 3 kids I know he adored. I remember seeing him at a lake beach in North Fort Lewis playing with his little boy.He was someone all of us in the platoon looked up to. A strong big brother figure."
He was beloved by many..may peace follow you and your children in the coming years...Matthew is with and will always be with you and your children.
