Hello,
We would like to express our deepest condolences and also let the Crookston Family know that we recently made a small donation to The Make a Wish Foundation in honor of Duncan C. Crookston US Army Private 1st Class. We recognize that this is a humble tribute, but we wanted you to know that it is heartfelt and made possible by thousands of like-minded individuals in the youth hockey community and beyond. We will not forget. May God Bless you and keep you strong.

Ever since I discovered that Duncan had been killed in action, I have been remembering the 3 year old that I once taught at church. We used to wait on the stage stairs until parents picked up their children and he asked the other teacher and myself if our husbands had to pick us up too. He was almost incredulous when I told him I had no husband. I guess that 3 year old figured all primary teachers had husbands. Anyway, it was a cute memory of a little boy who became a man who gave his life for others. I hope you have many sweet memories to counter the bitter.

It has been five years today since we buried our son, and the outpouring of support continues for our family, both in our local community and the online community. We miss him terribly, and continue to be awed by his sacrifice, conviction and the honorable and extraordinarily courageous young man that he was in his short life. Our thanks and gratitude to those who have kept him alive in their memory, and for the arms put around me as his mother when I represented him at the groundbreaking ceremony of the Colorado Freedom Memorial on this day.

I just read The Good Soldiers. Duncan's story left me in absolute tears. I was deeply moved by his story and incredibly saddened by the situation he was in. I've often sat and wondered how I would act if I was in his position. I'm happy he is finally at rest and in peace. God Bless Duncan. From all your military brother's in arms from all branches, thank you for your bravery and service.

I have spent the last 3 years trying to repress what happened that day but I can never forget it. The last thing I said to Duncan "we all love you man" and we still do. I remember every time Duncan would explain some type of electronic component, software or radio, I would look at him like he was talking a different language. Because of Duncan I am working towards my degree in tech school. Every day I work with some type of electronic or radio and I think of Duncan who gained my interest in electronics.

I was one of the Army nurses who cared for him at the Air Force Theater Hospital (332nd EMDG) in Balad. Some days after we evacuated him to Germany, the Stars and Stripes featured photos of him and his crew and their story on 26 SEP 07. To my dearest family, some things I'd like to say...
but first of all, to let you know, that I arrived okay.
I'm writing this from heaven. Here I dwell with God above.
Here, there's no more tears of sadness; here is just eternal love.
Please do not be unhappy just because I'm out of sight.
Remember that I'm with you every morning, noon and night.
That day I had to leave you when my life on earth was through,
God picked me up and hugged me and He said, "I welcome you."
It's good to have you back again; you were missed while you were gone.
As for your dearest family, they'll be here later on.
I need you here badly; you're part of my plan.
There's so much that we have to do, to help our mortal man."
God gave me a list of things, that he wished for me to do.
And foremost on the list, was to watch and care for you.
And when you lie in bed at night, the day's chores put to flight.
God and I are closest to you....in the middle of the night.
When you think of my life on earth, and all those loving years
because you are only human, they are bound to bring you tears.
But do not be afraid to cry; it does relieve the pain.
Remember there would be no flowers, unless there was some rain.
I wish that I could tell you all that God has planned.
But if I were to tell you, you wouldn't understand.
But one thing is for certain, though my life on earth is o'er.
I'm closer to you now, than I ever was before.
There are many rocky roads ahead of you and many hills to climb;
but together we can do it by taking one day at a time.
It was always my philosophy and I'd like it for you too...
that as you give unto the world, the world will give to you.
If you can help somebody who's in sorrow and pain,
then you can say to God at night......"My day was not in vain."
And now I am contented....that my life has been worthwhile,
knowing as I passed along the way, I made somebody smile.
So if you meet somebody who is sad and feeling low,
just lend a hand to pick him up, as on your way you go.
When you're walking down the street, and you've got me on your mind;
I'm walking in your footsteps only half a step behind.
And when it's time for you to go.... from that body to be free,
remember you're not going.....you're coming here to me.

Duncan,
I'm truly angered and sad that you were taken from this earth. I wish God didn't take you so soon, because I really wanted to get to know you on a personal level. Meaghun talked about you NON-STOP, jebus! haha- it was always "babe, i love you... babe... I LOVE YOU!! babe i love you" over and over and OVER. I remember we used to tease her so much for that; now I wish you were still here for her to say that to. It truly saddens me that you had to leave this way, and the way that you did, but you are SUCH a strong and inspirational person. To continue to fight for your life because of your love for Meaghun... truly remarkable. And you fought the good fight! In my eyes, you've won because you're now resting in eternal peace. I hope you're watching over Meaghun well! Because after your guys' long vacation, you'll finally be able to come home to each other.
Hope to see you soon again!
Rest in peace, hero.
Love & Respect.

To the Family and Friends of this Soldier:
I will stand in grief with this soldier's family to honor him. For every fallen HERO there is a bright star that shines in the evening sky to remind us of the cherished gift we were given – even if for too short a time.
My heart breaks again as I sign yet another guest book of another courageous young soldier who gave their life so selflessly. I wish I never found myself in a position to have to sign another guestbook for the rest of my life, but I promised Brent that neither he nor any like him would be forgotten and so I will continue until the day there is no longer the need.
We lost our son SFC Brent A. Adams on 12/1/05 and it seems like yesterday. I wish so badly there were things I could say to you right now to make the pain you are feeling go away, but I know first hand there simply are no words that will bring you the comfort and peace your heart aches for. Just know that you are not alone. My heart, thoughts, and prayers are with you all as you go through this tragedy moment by moment and as you mourn this loss.
We don't know each other, will probably never meet, but will forever be united in the loss of our Heroes. We have, unfortunately joined a group none of us wanted to join, an ever-growing group of families in this situation. May God grant you peace and strength to get through this and be able once again to smile at a memory rather than have only the tears that flow so easily now. To be so proud of your loved one and so saddened at the same time is a mix of emotions very difficult to deal with as our hearts both burst with pride and pain together.
I am sorry that I never knew your soldier personally. While they can never be replaced, neither will they ever be forgotten. You must trust that sometime, someday the loving memories you have will help to sustain you and help you go on. This courageous soldier will forever be your Angel watching over you all for the rest of your lives. It's what brings me some measure of peace and comfort and I hope it will you as well.
To his family and friends in pain, I offer this comfort: When you find yourself in that dark sorrowful place, think not only of how you will miss him, but instead recall the years, days, hours and minutes gifted to you by his presence. The one thing that cannot be taken from you is your wonderful memories that now will mean more than ever.
If you ever want to talk, I'm only an e:mail away and would love for you to tell me more about your Hero.
God Bless this soldier and family who gave all and God Bless legacy.com for setting up this site where families can so quickly share their condolences and prayers with others like themselves.

Written on Saturday, February 2, 2008 the evening after Duncan's memorial service:
I remember the first time I heard Duncan's name. It was a beautiful fall afternoon. The sun was shining, we were all together as a team - a family, if you will. The Grizzlies won their game in Wheatridge and all of us were in good spirits.
For so many years, I have been set apart from the war, safely removed from the true horror of it all because I had never come face-to-face with its realities and what it was doing to the servicemen and women, their families here at home, and our country. Much of that changed on that sunny September afternoon. Coach Mike's voice cracked as he spoke and tears filled his eyes as he introduced us to Duncan and his story. That was a very pivotol moment for all of us. From that point forward, the Grizzlies 2007 season took on new meaning. Duncan's name became familiar. For me, getting updates on his progress was important. For me, knowing that he was still alive gave me hope. Every Saturday as we would leave for our next game, we would pack up our gear and bring our big flag to the field. Every Saturday it was flown with conviction, pride, hope . . . for Duncan. He became part of a team he'd never met.
All these months later, the game jerseys are packed away until next season. Our boys growing bigger and stronger as next September approaches. And, when the season finally gets here, we will begin the oh-so-familiar weekly routine, carting our boys to and from the practice field. Life goes on, week after week, month after month. So do memories. Some memories are good, some not so good, but all of them a part of what form our lives. In dark and lonely times, memories can wrap their arms around you, protecting you from a hellish abyss. Memories have a power like no other. They can make you break into a smile in an unexpected moment. They can make you laugh out loud. They can make you cry tears of joy and tears of sorrow. The memories that we leave behind are the greatest gift we can offer to those who loved us most.
Duncan, the Grizzlies family congregated at your memorial this morning to celebrate your life and honor the son, brother, friend, husband and soldier that you have been. The service was beautiful, truly a wonderful way for you to begin your journey - we should all be so blessed. What a privilege for our families to have been included. And, although we never had the opportunity to know you, your wife and your family need to know that you were important to us, to our children. For all that you gave in your short time here on Earth, God bless you, Duncan.
With a heavy heart, but a smile, too -
Pfc Lisinski

I feel honored to have met such an amazing person. A self-less person who would do anything for another. I am thankful my husband had the opportunity to serve with such a man. Your family is in my thoughts and prayers daily. The memory of Duncan and his courage will never leave my mind. Knowing that he is watching over my husband and the other members of Charlie Company for the remaining months of their deployment somehow helps to ease the fear. He is a hero who has blessed many and he will never be forgotten.

I remember when Coach Mike first told us about Duncan. It was a beautiful fall afternoon. The sun was shining, we were all together as a team - a family, if you will. For so many years, I was set apart from the war, removed from the true horror of it all because I never had to come face-to-face with its realities and what it was doing to the servicemen and women and their families here at home. On that sunny September afternoon, Mike's voice cracked as he spoke, tears filled his eyes and he introduced us to Duncan and his story. Every Saturday it was flown with conviction, pride, hope . . . for Duncan.
Have a wonderful journey!
With a heavy heart, but a smile, too -
