Memorial Day 2019
CJ I can not believe this is our 11th Memorial Day without you.
I have reflected all day of Memorial Days of past years. All the pool parties & barbecues with family & friends we shared. All the work to prepare my homemade potato salad that you would come to taste test for me and hiding yourself a big bowl for later that night. Big Shugs
Barbecue hamburgers & chicken he made with love & would get overheated doing it, but he knows what his family wants. Pool volleyball, music, beer & lots of laughs with family & friends going into late at night. Memories I will always cherish. Always knowing why we had Memorial Day but too busy making memories I cherish today & thank God I have these beautiful memories to hold on to.
Our Memorial Day is now filled with reflection & honoring you my dear CJ & all heros that have paid the ultimate sacrifice for our freedom.
But I say to all please make those memories with pool parties, barbecues & get togethers with family & friends every chance & everyday you can for the Memories are all we are left with to carry us through. But also take a Pause for a few moments to remember Why!!!
CJ you are always in our hearts & always on our minds. You will never be forgotten. We love & miss you dearly CJ. Rest easy my son & watch over us all until we see each other again. Love always & forever

Run for the Fallen/Honor and Remember have now joined together. There will be a 10-year cross-country memorial run this year, with markers placed along the way for each fallen service member. Looking at the planned run map, your marker will be placed in the state of Kansas, in May 2018.
Our 50th Golden Wedding Anniversary was on February 3rd. Our anniversary announcement appeared in today's local newspaper. We included a paragraph about you & our connection to Run for the Fallen.
We honor your service and sacrifice. Your legacy lives on now & will continue into the future.

Nine-Year Anniversary - - Remembering C.J.
Dearest C.J.,
Today is a solemn remembrance of your passing in 2008. We all miss you very, very much and think of you each day. You are our Angel in Heaven.
This family has never been the same, but we always hold you dear in our hearts and continue to cherish your memory.
Bill and I attended my 50th Las Cruces High School Reunion in October 2016; it included a picnic and military ceremony to honor our four classmates who were killed-in-action in Vietnam, and all veterans. It is comforting to see that many events now include a salute to those who serve.
The reunion organizers also set-up a website where classmates posted personal photos, both old and new, with captions. Some were old photos from Vietnam; so historically significant.
We posted your photo on the website to share your story and to include the fact that your mom, Hattie, and Aunt Magi, also graduated from Las Cruces High School a decade after I graduated.
People commented about how they were honored to learn about your service and sacrifice. We will continue to keep your legacy alive.
We remember you always, dearest C.J.

Eight-Year Anniversary - - Remembering C.J.
Dearest C.J.,
Eight years ago we learned that you were gone, Home to Heaven. You are Our Angel and we know that you are watching over us always. We find comfort in telling your story and keeping it alive for future generations.
Your mom, Hattie, celebrated her 40th Las Cruces High School class reunion in November. Your Aunt Magi joined her on the trip and we all had a wonderful weekend! The reunion committee made special memorial decorations - - red silk roses with flags. We mailed a box of them to your Aunt Anna to decorate your grave.
For Veterans' Day at Charlie's elementary school, the family was presented with a beautiful Honor and Remember flag in your honor. The students and staff learned about what it is to be a Gold Star family and so much more.
For your 8-year anniversary decorations, we sent a box of sparkly hearts to your Aunt Anna and family in Arlington, Virginia. They collect lovely things all year and make your grave at Arlington National Cemetery look extraordinary!
Always smiling when we think of you . . .

We would like to express our deepest condolences and also let the West Family know that we recently sent Care Packages to American troops in Afghanistan. We recognize that this is a humble tribute, but we wanted you to know that it is heartfelt and made possible by thousands of like-minded individuals in the youth hockey community and beyond. Seven-Year Anniversary - - Remembering “C.J.”
Dearest C.J.,
It has been seven years since that tragic day when you were called Home to Our Lord. We are not the same family that we were, there is a hole in our hearts that we try to fill by keeping your legacy alive and sharing it with others.
Memorabilia from the CPL Christopher J. “C.J.” West Troop Medical Clinic, Iraq, remains on display at the U.S. Army Medical Department (AMEDD) Museum at Fort Sam Houston, Texas. Future generations will learn about your dedication and ultimate sacrifice.
“Run for the Fallen” has become part of the fabric of our lives. On August 24, 2014, I logged 6.2 miles in your memory and have accumulated over 1,200 miles since 2008. I hope to do many more miles for you in the future.
We chose Valentine's pinwheels for your 7-year anniversary decorations and had them sent to our family in Arlington, Virginia. They will assemble all of the beautiful things that they have collected and make your grave at Arlington National Cemetery look glorious, as always.
Missing you always, remembering you each day, your memory continues…

Six-Year Anniversary - - Remembering “C.J.”
Dearest C.J.,
Today marks the 6-year anniversary of your passage Home to be with The Lord. This family has never been the same since you left us all so unexpectedly. We find comfort in keeping your memory close to our hearts and in telling others the story of your service and sacrifice.
There have been major changes regarding the CPL Christopher J. “C.J.” West Troop Medical Clinic, Iraq, which was dedicated in your honor in 2009. When the clinic was turned-over to the Iraqi people, the West family donated the clinic signs and memorabilia to the U.S. Army Medical Department (AMEDD) Museum at Fort Sam Houston, Texas. Thousands of others are now learning about your story, your heroism.
“Run for the Fallen” continues to be part of our lives. I logged 8.43 miles on the last “run” in August 2013, and dedicate more miles to you throughout the year. Since 2008, I have logged over 900 miles in your memory and hope to reach a total of 1,000 miles before the next “run” in August 2014.
In keeping with tradition, I made 6-year anniversary decorations for your grave at Arlington National Cemetery. There are hearts with your name inscribed on each, as well as, a variety of other decorations that I have collected throughout the year. The family will make it all look beautiful, I know.
We miss you. We love you. We remember you.
Always in our hearts!

Five-Year Anniversary - - Remembering “C.J.”
Dearest C.J.,
It is hard to believe that it's been five years- -half a decade- -since you made your journey Home to Heaven. It seems like only yesterday that we all gathered at your funeral to say “Goodbye!” Your absence has left a hole in the heart of this family, and we all know that things will never, ever, be the same without you. So we each try to fill our own hearts with memories of your heroic life, and work to keep your legacy alive.
“Run for the Fallen” remains an on-going project for your family, friends and fellow troops. I logged 8.55 miles for you in August 2012, and accumulate miles for you throughout the year.
This weekend, your mom and dad sent photos of your beautifully-decorated grave in Section 60 at Arlington National Cemetery, and it is obvious that you are much-loved. The huge yellow wreath, Cowboys shirt, flags, and the heart decorations that I made for you, all symbolize how special you are to each and every one of us.
We miss you. We love you. We remember you.

Hello CJ,
For some strange reason this 4th year since you were killed in Iraq is hitting me very hard. I think of you at least 10 times a day but today was the day we (the family and friends) were in Arlington burying what was left of your mangled body. We all were trying to be so strong and Mom was trying to be the "ROCK" she promised you she would be. Who knew what challenges lied ahead for each of us. What each of us would overcome with your spirit helping each of us.
"THANK YOU AND THANK YOU GOD THE FATHER."
Not only was my heart fractured but who knew that my heart would be held by another man with God helping him put me back together. It was a day that "DEATH" was standing at my door. Thanks for being there again and kicking my a** and telling me to go back and take care of the family. "Your time is not now---you still have things to accomplish--BIG SUG." I love you and miss you very much. I know you are standing in heaven laughing at me because I have lost all my voting rights now that you are gone. The women rule!!! Boy do they rule!!! Well anyway Laugh away and just remember one day they will be up there with you too. I miss your smile and our talks and your vote!!
The pain never goes away I just learn to deal with it the best way I can. That is all we all can do.
Funny thing happened tonight when I got my fortune cookie--it said "Our duty, as men and women, is to proceed as if limits to our ability did not exist." I truly can say that you actually lived as if you had no limits on your ability and you strived to always be better.
I read something from a GREAT MAN who said this in his time which is still true today--"I pray that our heavenly Father may assuage the anguish of your bereavement, and leave you only the cherished memory of the loved and lost, and the solemn pride that must be yours to have laid so costly a sacrifice upon the altar of freedom.
Yours very sincerely and respectfully,
Abraham Lincoin"
He sure understood the feelings that not only our family is going through but all the families who have lost loved ones protecting this wonderful Country of ours and those who live within its borders.
Sun I mean Son I will see you in my sleep and I pray that you are at peace and got 100 virgins around you!!!
Love,
Big Sug

CJ, my sweet son I love & miss you so much everyday. We are now in the 4 year mark and so much has happened to our family. The day they knocked at our door all of our lives changed that day. Our hearts are forever fractured and we learn to live with this pain. We do keep on living as you would want us to but it is very different. You were our balance of the family and you made life very interesting. Always laughter and yes sometimes your honesty was brutal but we all respected you for who you were and how honest you were. Your character spoke for itself. I miss your laughter, love and You so much. We continue to be the best we can be...West Family Strong...
I know you are proud of us all.
CJ watch over us all and keep a light on for us to guide us and give us strength. Know we are keeping your name alive and you will never be forgotten. Until we meet again my CJ know I am always thinking of you.
Love your Mom

Dearest C.J.,
It has been four years since you left us to go Home to Heaven. People said that you were an “Old Soul” even when you were a little child, so you didn't need to stay here long to do this lifetime's work. In your 26 years, you made a heroic mark on the world, and touched the lives of so many people with your bravery, dedication, good humor and memorable smile.
Your family, friends and fellow troops carry on your legacy by logging miles for you throughout the year, and each summer at “Run for the Fallen” in August. Since 2011 marked the 10th Anniversary of 9/11, I chose to log 9.11 miles in your memory on August 21st. Bill took photos, and the newspaper published your story.
People will be gathering in Section 60 at Arlington National Cemetery this weekend to visit your grave, and I continued my tradition of creating memorial ornaments for the occasion. This year, I decorated large butterflies in a variety of lively colors as mementos; each design includes a signature “C.J.” heart.
We hold your memory in our hearts, and keep your story alive by always sharing it with the world.
You will not be forgotten!

Dearest C.J.,
Today marks the third anniversary of your journey to Heaven, and we all continue to cherish your memory and legacy. Your family, friends and fellow troops log miles for you throughout the year and every summer at “Run for the Fallen” in August.
At our house, we think of you each time we see dragonflies. That started when I saw that beautiful giant dragonfly perched on our rosebush after “Run for the Fallen 2009.” This autumn, we found three lifeless dragonflies here at the house, and have saved them all in containers. The first one was found on the backseat floor of the car- - that was on September 11, 2010. The other two were found in November- - one was found on Veterans’ Day, and the other one, two days before that. When I was out doing my run on the morning of my birthday, I saw dozens of small dragonflies dancing around a cluster of flowers at the park, and I thought of you and smiled!
Your memory lives on in our hearts.
You will never be forgotten!

It has been 2years plus since that fateful day and we are still getting bits and peices of new information about how it effected so many people or what you really went through or did.
Everyday is a new day for me and I live with this hole in my heart which somedays wants to devire me whole. Everyday it seems as if I fight for my life to fight the good fight. I hurt when I wake up and I hurt when I go to bed. Life is so wonderful and then it can be so cruel. I do have to thank you for giving me so much strength to allow me to be rid of FEAR. AS of now I fear nothing except GOD who I LOVE with all my heart. One day son we will be together. It maybe a blink to you but I must live the life that I have been blessed with. I LOVE YOU SON.
Everyday I think of you a least 50 times or more. Sometimes I think I smell you at night standing by my bed watching me.
The ROCK (mom)is finally starting to crack. She has done very well in keeping the promise she had made to you however she loves you so so much that holes are starting to show in her armor. Your Mom has gone through so much. She is amazing and so strong. I was blessed with a great woman to have in and share my life with and she was a GREAT MOM.
Cameron is going through some rough situtations. However she is finally getting a chance to heal. Visit her and help her hurdle these challenges so that she can be Happy again.
Lauren and Cameron miss you so so much but Lauren is a hard nut to crack. Both are feeling the pain of THE DAY so so differently. If you get a chance stop by and visit them. They need the touch of your Love. Maybe you can put a good word to GOD and he will bless all of us with his LOVE and get rid of these Demons we keep bumping into.
Son, I am so proud to have been your Father and you have taught me much. Thank you and you be safe and I'll see you when I see you.
Love you---your DAD

John and Hattie -
I made an entry one year ago today because we knew our son Philip was thinking of Chris and we know how difficult this day is for him. I hoped that it might help alittle if you knew he was in Philip's thoughts. He was a friend of Chris, with him on that day and I know few days go by that he doesnt remember not only the loss but the friendship. I do know for sure that especially on Memorial Day he thinks about about the true meaning of the day with much, much respect. We can only imagine as parents how difficult every day must be for you but we hope that even an entry once a year will let you know that Chris is not forgotten - even by perfect strangers. Please know our thoughts and prayers are with you.

CJ today you have been heavy on my mind. I was not able to be in DC with your dad today at Arlington National Cemetary. Because of Life!!! I know you know what is going on down here. In my dream you told me you were busy, busy, busy. I would imagine it is watching over all of your family and friends and your fellow soldiers.
I miss you so much!!! Some days it takes my breath away. Literally!!
Your dad decorated your grave again with such love and splendor. He misses you so much. We all do. This is the hardest thing we have ever done in our lives. I just want you to know that I will continue to keep your name alive here so no one will forget you. I dont think that would ever happen anyway you were such a force of nature.
I love you and miss you my son. Always and Forever :)
Love always and God Keep you in his hands, Mom

To the family of CPL West,
Today is Memorial Day, and I hope it brings you solace to know that your son's sacrifice is not forgotten. He was a shining star who will be sorely missed.
I was a student at Fort Sam Houston with your son, and remember him fondly. In honor of your son, thank you!

To the friends and family of CPL West. I went to AIT with West and he was a friend. We used to study together and we had good times at the Hacienda. He always had the biggest smile. It's memorial day we got to put the American flag up today(I am deployed, it's unusual to fly the American Flag) and when I saluted the flag I thought of West and I couldn't stop thinking about him. I wanted to say something cause he has been on my mind all day! I am fortunate enough to have met him and without looking at a picture I can see his huge grin. I only have fond memories of him, his smile, his laugh, his humor and his friendly demeanor.

Two-Year Anniversary “Day of Remembrance”
***
Our family extends heartfelt thanks to everyone who has been so kind to us over the past two years. Family and friends will honor the life, service and sacrifice of my nephew, U.S. Army CPL Christopher John-Lee “C.J.” West, with a graveside gathering in Section 60 at Arlington National Cemetery.
We invite people everywhere to join with us in spirit for a Two-Year Anniversary “Day of Remembrance” on Thursday, February 4, 2010. Dragonfly ornaments from New Mexico will commemorate the day.
This past year has been an eventful one for our family.
Last summer, we were pleasantly surprised with news that a troop medical clinic would be re-named for my nephew. The “CPL Christopher J. ‘C.J.’ West Troop Medical Clinic” was formally dedicated on September 17, 2009, in Iraq . After graduating with honors from Texas A&M, my nephew chose training as a combat medic/paratrooper to be “helpful” to others. The wall-sized “C.J.” mural greets every patient at the clinic where his “helpful” spirit lives on each day.
Last spring, my sister, Hattie West, launched her “Boxes of Joy” project. Dozens of gift boxes have been mailed to troops in Iraq and Afghanistan.
“Run for the Fallen” is an ongoing activity for our family and friends. We have logged hundreds of miles in memory of C.J. and the other fallen troops.
My husband, Bill, has done the computer work to archive all of these events on CD’s for C.J.’s baby niece who was born when he was in-training. They never got to meet, but Bill is preserving C.J.’s legacy for her and for future generations.
May God bless our beautiful country, and
to all of our troops, veterans and their families, we say, “Thank you for your service!”
Sincerely,
Hannah Edahl Monsimer

CJ today I thought of you and all of our veterans...it is hard to believe that it is going on 2 years this coming Feb. We miss you so much and think of you everyday. Today I want to thank you for your service and your untimate sacrifice that you made for all of our freedoms. I know that in your heart that is what you were doing when you told me "That we have the greatest country in the world and you felt that you needed to give back for all of the freedoms that you enjoyed". You are my hero and I love and adore you so much. I am so proud of you for fighting for what you believed in...I will see you in my dreams my son and know that we will see each other one day again and this will all be a dream. Happy Veterans Day to you and to all of your brothers and sisters that fought a good fight.
Love always and God Bless You, Mom

John and Hattie -
We are thinking of you today. You do not know us, never heard of us and probably we will never meet. But our sons were friends. Philip was with Chris when he was killed.
Chris is forever part of Philip's life. He and others from the 82nd spoke today beacause they need to find others who truly understand the meaning of Memorial Day. Chris was part of their conversation - he was part of lives and their memories. Please know that your sorrow is shared by people you will never meet. Just as we understand the never-ending pride as military parents. Our sons bring us together. You are in our prayers always.

My greatest respect for the family of SPC Christopher J. West, you have given the ultimate sacrifice for which I am truly grateful. I had the sincere pleasure of meeting your son in AIT at Fort Sam Houston. He was dedicated and truely a soldier of integrity.
It is my hope that my battle buddies and former Taz Medics especially take a moment of this Memorial Day 2009 to reflect on our mission, our friends, and especially SPC West.

Son,
Today marks your first year tour in Heaven. As we drove through the gates at Arlington National today you could feel the energy and spirit around it truely is an amazing place so much history which you are now apart of. We gathered graveside with many of your soldier brothers, family & friends. We honored you with prayer and words of praise to what an amazing soldier you were and that you gave all. We had lovely yellow roses to bring you alittle Texas to DC and we were honored to have a wonderful man Norman Weaver to play the bagpipes for you and your fellow brothers who lay at rest with you. It was a cold but lovely day to honor you our dear son. We miss you and will never forget you and we are so very proud of you and always will be. Watch over your family and your fellow soldiers to continue to keep our great country free. We were blessed to have a son as you. You will always be in our hearts and your name will always cross our lips to keep your name alive and for future generations to know you as our hero.
Love Always and God Keep you in his hands, Mom & Dad

MEMORIAL LETTER for C.J.
"Letters to the Editor"

"Las Cruces Sun-News"- - Tuesday, January 27, 2009
"Remembering C.J."
Our family greatly appreciates the many expressions of sympathy received over this past year. My nephew, U.S. Army Cpl. Christopher John-Lee "C.J." West, a combat medic and paratrooper, was killed-in-action in Iraq on February 4, 2008.
A "One-Year Celebration" will be held graveside at Arlington National Cemetery on Wednesday, February 4, 2009. We invite people everywhere to join with our family, in spirit, at high noon (Eastern Time)/10 a.m. (local time) for a special "Moment of Remembrance" to honor the life, service and sacrifice of our beloved C.J. and all of the other fallen troops and their families. Bagpipe music will play and dozens of small dream catchers from New Mexico will decorate the area.
My sister, Hattie Brettler West, and her husband, John, have received hundreds of cards and letters from around the world. Even now, condolences continue to arrive, and Hattie continues to thank each and every sender.
My husband, Bill, has acted as the family archivist this past year, compiling the hundreds of photos, memorabilia and news articles about C.J., onto a compact disk. C.J. never got to meet his baby niece who was born while he was in training, so this CD will help her learn all about her Uncle C.J.
This has been a very challenging year for our family. C.J.'s passing has left a hole in our family and in each of our hearts. We have found comfort in preserving his memory through service to others. The "Wounded Warriors" and "Run for the Fallen" were two
of our projects this year.
Again, we thank everyone for the many words of kindness this past year. This support has been a source of strength for us all. May God bless the United States of America, and all of our troops and their families.

C.J. Happy Birthday to you my dear sweet son. We miss you so much. January 8th 2009 was very hard for me. I remembered the day you were born in every detail. I wrote you a letter for your dad to read to you when he went out to visit you. It was very hard for him as well as your sisters. This life is so very different without you but I know that you would want us to live this life with luster so we are working on it. You were and still are an energy in the mix of it all. I love you soooo much and know that you are in Heaven with Our Father and mixing it up there as you did here. I will always keep your name alive and you will always be in my heart forever until we meet again my son. Happy Birthday to you in Heaven.
Love always and God Keep you close to him, Mom
