My thoughts linger with you and your family this day-after Memorial Day. I and my family are forever grateful for the sacrifices made by our elite countrymen and women and their families, which afford us the freedoms so many others around the world do not enjoy. Thanks to you, there is hope that one day all people will be able to achieve their true potential through liberation and self reliance. Your sacrifice is an enormous part of that quest, and will always be remembered as such. Thank you Alex, and God bless you and your family.

Alex,

Just a random day but still thinking and missing you brother! Thanks for what you did. The world is a little less of a place to be without you. My little one Emma Alexis, named after you, is a bit wild and crazy like you (we) were my friend. You are always in my thoughts and I wear my bracelot without exception in your honor.

Alex,

Another year has passed and I can honestly say a day doesn't go by when I don't think of you or the fun we had together over the years. As I travel more and more with work I take you with me, both in my heart and on my wrist, and often catch myself saying "here we go again to this place or that place" as I take my braclet off, the only time I do, to go through the metal detector. I am going to be out of town this weekend, but plan on making a trip south on Thursday to share our annual beer! You are still and always will be in our thoughts and prayers.

I was stationed with CPT Funkhouser in Friedberg Germany " 2-67 Armor " and when I was informed of the loss, I froze. Jim was an outstanding soldier and friend who will be missed by so many lives he has touched. I went down in 2004 and spent 9 months at Walter Reed. Even lost half my team. But seeing this about Jim really hit the heart hard. I am so sorry for your loss Mrs. Funkhouser. I and the rest of the Dukes are here for ya. SSG Brian K Dean MP USA RET / US SENATE

The Wind on The Downs

“I like to think of you as brown and tall,
As strong and living as you used to be,
In khaki tunic, Sam Brown belt and all,
And standing there and laughing down at me.
Because they tell me, dear, that you are dead,
Because I can no longer see your face,
You have not died, it is not true, instead
You seek adventure in some other place.
That you are round about me, I believe;
I hear you laughing as you used to do,
Yet loving all the things I think of you;
And knowing you are happy, should I grieve?
You follow and are watchful where I go.”

(Written by Marian Allen during World War l )

Two lines that I wish you to keep near your heart…….

“You seek adventure in some other place.
That you are round about me, I believe”

I did not know 'Alex', but I am remembering
his service. He is my hero. !

The Other Side

i'm over on the other side
where life and death softly divide.
left my skin and bones behind
now i'm over on the other side.

can you feel me there with you?
my breath is gone but i'm not through.
loved you then and i still do
from over on the other side.

i can fly. really fly.
below the earth ... all through the sky.
tell em all i did not die.
i'm just over on the other side.

it's good here on the other side.
the sweetest songs...the bluest skies.
thank you for the tears you cried
but it's good here on the other side.

i can fly. really fly. below the earth...all through the sky.
tell em all i did not die.
i'm just over on the other side

the world is smaller than a needle's eye.
where life and death softly divide.
when you leave your skin and bones behind
i'll be waiting on the other side.

i can fly. really fly. below the earth ... all through the sky.
go tell em all i did not die.
i'm just over on the other side.

Memorial Day two years ago changed lives forever as our country lost a great man in "Captain Funk" as my son Scott referred to Alex. He spoke of Alex as a kind man and a strong heroic leader who was loved by his men. Scott was there that day and although he doesn't speak of the incident often he has expressed his deep sadness for the loss of his friend and leader.

We never met but I think of "Captain Funk" and his family often. You will remain in my prayers. Alex will never be forgotten!

Memorial day is always a hard day, i get up in the morning and google Alex, and watch the videos and read peoples words about Alex and just cry. Alex was my cousin (2nd cousin i believe, but cousin still the same) He lives in our hearts everyday. When i heard of Alex's death i was stunned, it came exactly 1 month after my wedding. His parents had sent my husband and i the most beautifully written wedding card that we received, it seemed so unfair that so soon after they sent me that card wishing my husband and i a happy future, that they lost their son. On this memorial day my thoughts and prayers are with Alex, and the Funkhouser family, and Jennifer although we have never met i feel like i know you through watching your story in the media and i commend you for being so strong. Your daughters are beautiful and they will always know that their daddy is a hero.

As the days draw near to the two-year anniversary of Alex's death, I still find it hard to believe he's been gone. I sometimes find myself expecting to get a letter from him in the mail asking about my grades or when I'm graduating. I will never get to see that again. You never realize how much a person means to you until they are gone. We go about our day to day lives thinking about mundane things like 'Oh, did I get bread for dinner?' but what we don't think about is that our days are numbered on this earth. We have to enjoy life and the people we care about because they won't be there forever.

Alex made every day an exciting experience, like it was his last day. I see his smile when I close my eyes and if I think about him I hear him laughing. I just hope with some time I will be able to look at life the same way he did, as a big party. My good memories won't ever go away, but I would give anything just to see him one more time and tell him I love him. I will be graduating May 20th and I want to tell Alex it is for him because he always made sure I was rewarded for good grades.

I pray for strength if Aunt Margaret and Uncle Jim wake up and feel down. I know they have to have days like that. I can't even grasp what they must feel, only that they have to be the bravest people I know. I love them both dearly and maybe I can spend some time with them this coming summer.

On an ending note, this 29th I hope that everyone remembers how much Alex had touched their lives and what he believed in. I know it's hard not to get caught up in the political aspects of the war, but remember that Alex died for us and our freedom so we should love him and remember him for that.

Two days before he died, Captain Funkhouser pulled me aside and took me into his office. I thought I was in trouble for something, yet he sat me down and simply asked, "How you doing?" We talked for a good half-hour about his career and what I wanted to do with mine. He was a caring commander that looked after every Soldier he had. I think about May 29th, 2006 everyday. To Jennifer and her two children: My thoughts and prayers will always be with you.

Jim & Margaret,

I am so thankful to come across this website for I've wanted to tell you for some time how deeply saddened I was to hear about Alex. He was an outstanding young man and his loss is such a tragedy. My heart truly breaks for you both.

I felt horrible for not attending Alex’s service however, I didn't know about it until after the fact. I wanted to send you both a card, but I didn't know how to get in touch with either you. Please know that my thoughts and prayers were with you, as well as Jennifer and the girls.

While I am no longer a “Funkhouser” in name, please know that you and the Funkhouser family will always have a special place in my heart:) The “Texas Funkhouser’s” shared some wonderful times while our kids were growing up. The three of you definitely brightened our holidays:) Alex seemed more like a nephew to me than a cousin.

Please feel free to contact me or look me up if you are ever in the Dallas area.

Love to you both…

Alex and his family were neighbors of ours and lived directly across the street from my family and me. He was always quick to wave across the street with a “how’s it goin’”, and although we were mostly “hi and bye” neighbors, I do remember his girls plying with my daughter on a couple of occasions and Alex offering to let me use his spreader when I was treating my lawn. Thunder Creek (our old neighborhood) went through so many changes since then; of course Jen and the girls moved shortly after his death; others who knew them left as well, and we have since moved to the east coast. But when I think of good memories there, he and his family come to mind.

Jennifer...its taken me over a year to find this page and to write you a short note. I knew Alex as a young Lieutenant at Fort Knox and had the pleasure of having him on our Observer/Controller team as a Captain at Fort Polk. I still remember sitting with the two of you at the Hail and Farewell when we welcomed you both to the unit. He was a super officer and friend. I remember how happy and proud he was when he found out he was going off to Fort Hood to take Command. I was shocked when I heard what had happened. I remember Alex always by the bracelet I wear on my wrist everyday with his name inscribed on it. Still thinking of you and your two wonderful daughters. I tried to do this earlier, but I guess I was unsucessfull. Jim, I just recieved the news of your loss. There are no words that can adequately express my sorrow for your loss. My only hope is that you find comfort in thought that James is with God.

Jim Sr. There are no words that can ease what must be a distraught feeling. If I can offer some words of some comfort, I believe that there is a higher power with a grand plan. James must be part of that plan.May Gods blessings be upon you and your family.

August 14, 2007

There is nothing that I can say or do to take away the pain or bring you peace in your time of sorrow, but I will offer you and your family my heart felt condolences. I also offer you my prayers that in time the pain will easy and the memories of your HERO will carry you through each day and night. I want to thank your HERO, for his/her selfless act of becoming a member of the armed forces, his/her willingness to defend the United States of America, all that we hold sacred and for the sacrifice that will forever be etched in the memories of all those who knew him/her. Though tears can never bring him/her back, we hope that our tears express our gratitude for the sacrifice that he/she made and our sorrow at his/her passing. I believe for every fallen HERO there is a star shining brightly up above to remind us of the precious gift we were given.

Your mission on earth is complete and you are now a member of GOD’s Heavenly armed forces. Stand down brave warrior and take your rightful place in Heaven with all the HEROES who have passed before.

I made a special promise to LE RON A. WILSON, a dear family friend who joined the Army with three other friends, one of whom is my son (Le Ron was killed in action on 07/06/07 at the age of 18) on the day he was laid to rest as I touched his coffin, that I would never forget him nor would I forget those that gave their lives for our country before him, with him and after him and so when I came across www.legacy.com, I thought what a great way to keep my promise to Le Ron, so I will continue to leave tributes in each guest book until the day there is no longer the need to leave these tributes to a FALLEN HERO.

REST IN PEACE, HERO, YOU WILL NEVER BE FORGOTTEN!!

I am one of Alex's friends from Jr high and high school. What an honor it is to be his friend. I have so many memories from those younger days and our ealrly years in college. My life is partially formed with and because of his. The only part of Flashpoint that made me smile was when one of the soldiers referenced the commander walking out in his flip flops....THAT IS ALEX!!!! We had a pool growing up and used to bug Alex about getting in because he would not wear shoes all summer like a Flintstone. I miss my friend.

Well Todd Woodrum told me what happened to you sir and with that I send my deepest reguards to your family. It kind of caught me by surprise when I found out about it I was talkin to my wife and Todd on three way from Iraq on my cell phone. I have lost fellow friends and soldiers. I just want to tell you that the time I new you in Vilseck, Germany and of course knowing you as a former platoon leader as well. Take care and I enjoyed serving with you when we were in the same company (Bravo Company 2-63AR) Take care sir and see you again.

It was by chance that we turned on the t.v. to the Flashpoint special. It sent chills through my body to see the footage of the aftermath of that horrific day. Unfortunately, the kind of day that seems to continue to repeat itself. Thank you to the brave families who are enduring and the countless soldiers who are fighting and dying for our country. I do not shelter my children from the reality of this situation and when news casts of this nature are on, we stop and listen, say a prayer and appreciate our freedom. God Bless you and your family and all of the families.

It was hard to watch Flashpointlast evening--I feel so much sadness and yet so much pride in our soldiers. it was especially hard to hear Alex's name as it is the same name as my father. I think it is just a coincidence, but I think it is a great name. And I think your Alex is a great person. The best of everything to your family.

May 30, 2007

I saw you and your family on Flashpoint last nite. I was so moved, your bravery, protecting your troops. It really brings home to me again, the impact that only one IED incident can have, the rippling effect thru the families and multiply that by ?????

You saved Kimberly Doziers life and all of your troops. That was a truly amazing story.

And I say that with conviction, as I lost my nephew, PFC Charles S. Cooper Jr. on April 29th, 2005 in Baghdad.

We are so proud of him and you and all the soldiers and families and the sacrifices that are made. You and your family will always be in our hearts and prayers.

I send my deepest condolences to your family, and a beautiful family it is. They are your legacy.

May you find peace...

May 30, 2007

I saw the Flashpoint documentary last night recounting the journey of Kimberly Dozier as she was so gravely wounded a year ago. I would like to send a message of condolence to the family, friends, and commrades of Capt. Funkhouser. May your memories give you comfort and strength. Fine memories really do stand the test of time. I lost a cousin in Vietnam in 1969 during his second voluntary tour and still see him in my minds eye vividly in his uniform, a proud 25-year old helicopter pilot. He lived his dream. He has been gone 38 years. Each Memorial Day, I go to the Vietnam Wall to honor his memory and still whisper my quiet thanks to him. I know he knows I'm there. And now, my quiet thanks to Capt. Funkhouser. May God bless and keep all those who grieve and miss this fine soldier.

May 30, 2007

I saw the program on CBS regarding the CBS journalist Kimberly Dozier. In the program Alex's family was interviewed. When little Kaitlyn said in response to what she misses about her dad: "I miss tickling" I cannot stop tears, any moment I remember her words. I salute James Alex Funkhouser and his family. My question to god is why, why and why a little child has to go throught this. Sometimes a person lives 35 years life in 100 years, and person like Alex lived 100 year life in 35 years.

Gerald Burns

May 30, 2007

I would like to pass my condolences to your family. Although I did not know the Capt., it is men like him that kept me safe while I was deployed with KBR in the International Zone for 2 plus years. With missions in and out of the IZ it was the 4rth ID who protected me. I believe in my heart that the lives lost in Iraq will not be in vain. They will not be forgotten.

Dear Funkhouser family I'm very sorry for your loss. James was one of my soldier's before he went to OCS. He was a good man wish I would have stayed in touch with him looks like it did it right. Dear Jennifer, I saw the Flashpoint piece tonight on TV and was so moved by your strength and courage that I had to write you. I am so sorry for your loss and I know you hear that all the time, but we who stand on the outside and our hearts hurt for you and those precious little girls, don't have any other words to express our sorrow for your tremendous loss. Yes, your husband was a hero in every sense of the word. aND YOU MUST BE A HERO also for him to have chosen to live his life with you and have a family with you. I guess it took me some time to put two and two together. One of our units was also on site the day CPT Funkhouser was killed. It wasn't until the other day when I saw his name associated with CBS Reporter Kim Doser, that I made the connection. I went to AOBC with Jim in Fort Knox in 2000. He was such a blast to be around. Although we haven't spoken for several years, I will always remember him and his fun to be around demeanor. My sincerest condolences go out to him and his family.

Respectfully, CPT Jason Edwards

Every time I pass my old boss home, CPT Funkhouser, I think about the memories. I want lie, I choke up to hold back tears! One quote that I created is, "when you cry, the destination of that tear is your heart!" Sir, you will be missed!!! I only knew him for a short time, but one thing about him, he loved Soldiers and their families. He was a great Soldier, Husband and Father. He will be missed. My prayers go out to his entire family. I will never forget you Alex! See you in Heaven one Day!

My husband just showed me a list of people who have fallen in the war from Texas, I immediately looked at my home town Katy, Texas. I am also 35 and must have graduated the same hear as Alex, 1989. I was not sure if I remembered him but since I read the bio about Alex I know I will never forget about him. I am so sorry for your loss and hope for the best for you and your family; also to the soldier's and their families protecting our country. God Bless the United States of America!

We were sorry we could not attend the services for him, but when Michael told us about it we were in Ca. visiting my other son and his family. We will always remember Alex's sense of humor. God Bless, Kathy and John Brocato

To the family and friends of Captain Funkhouser: I am sorry for your loss... while at the gym today I was watching a news special on fallen heroes. I was shocked to see a photo of a friend from the past. I knew CPT Funkhouser when we were enlisted men with 2/67 Armor in Germany from 92-93. I think we also went to basic training together but he was in another platoon, so I'm not sure on that. I have some photos in storage (I'm moving) of then Specialist or PFC Funkhouser in my barracks room and out on FTX in Hoenfelds. I will gladly look for and share them with family and friends if you would like them. The photos are from ftx's and in garrison. I remember Funkhouser as a good soldier and from knowing him during that time I am certain he was a good husband and father. Once again I'm sorry for your loss and sincerely express my condolences.

Jen,

There aren't any words left to describe how this entire event has affected everyone. Alex was a great guy and a wonderful dad. I'll always remember him in sweats, deck shoes and a tie-dye T-shirt and thinking, "This CAN'T be the guy she told me about.!"

His sacrifice is your sacrifice. I hope the pain lessens and days get better for you and the girls.

Love to you, Kaitlyn, and Allison.

I'll be seeing you,

Loved ones of Alex Funkhouser,

I was saddened to receive the news of your loss.

Alex and I spent a short but meaningful time in the Piney woods of Fort Polk in Strategic Plans. It didn’t take long working with Alex to see his outstanding traits of leadership, common sense and humor. We shared a few short rounds of golf together, as well as a few long ones, where Alex taught me the meaning of the word patience.

My heart and my prayers go with you

Dear Funkhouser families and friends-I knew Alex at Fort Polk, Louisiana; we worked together and we lived on the same street. One would be hard pressed to find a nicer man-one who would always greet you with a smile. My heart goes out to you all.

To the family of Alex Funkhouser,

I am so sorry for your loss. I went to junior high and high school with Alex and will never forget his great smile and laughter. We always ended up seated next to each other in history classes and continually had our books taken up by the teacher. We both loved to read! He was a great guy and I'm glad that I got to know him both through school and a mutual friend Zoltan. I regret that we lost contact after school. I'll keep you in my thoughts and I'm proud to say that I knew Alex.

Dear Mrs. Funkhouser,

I recently learned about CPT Funkhouser here in Germany and I would like to just say to you and to your daughters that he was an outstanding soldier. I was on the same Observer Controller Armor/Mech team at JRTC with your husband and being with him out in the field was riot.

He knew how to make us all laugh and always kept his cool. He always spoke about taking leave and going back to Texas for R&R. I will miss his leadership and friendship.

Thank you for giving us a hero.
