Obituary published on Legacy.com by Callaway-Allee Funeral Home on Oct. 3, 2025.
John "Johnny" Herbert Bennett, age 77, of Crockett passed away Thursday, October 2, 2025, at his home at Spring Creek Country Club surrounded by the lake and pines that he loved. Johnny was born September 18, 1948, in
Crockett, Texas to parents, Herbert "Leon" Bennett and Jewell Hazlett Bennett.
Johnny was a 1966 graduate of Crockett High School and went on to play football at Stephen F. Austin State University. For 33 years, he owned and operated Bennett Equipment Company, proudly serving the farmers and ranchers of Houston County and beyond. He was a true steward of the land and agriculture, always willing to lend a hand to neighbors and friends.
A faithful servant in his community, Johnny was President of the Harrison Reunion for over 30 years, ensuring family ties and traditions were kept strong across the generations, and served one term as President of Spring Creek Country Club. He was a lifelong member of First United Methodist Church of Crockett, where his faith was lived out in service and love.
Johnny was also an avid Baylor Bear fan, never missing a chance to cheer on his beloved team. Whether in the stands or at home, Baylor green and gold ran deep in his heart.
Johnny was a family man above all else. He cherished his wife, children, and grandchildren with a steadfast love that was the heart of his life. The first time he saw Vicki, he declared, "I'm going to marry that girl one day," and he kept that promise for 50 years. Married to his sweetheart, Johnny modeled faithfulness, devotion, and quiet strength. Together they built a home full of love and faith in God. He was the sweetest daddy to his girls. He was not only their father, but their best friend, confidant, and secret keeper–the one they turned to for wisdom, laughter, and unconditional love. He and his daughter Jessica shared a special bond as best friends–like-minded in so many ways, they just understood each other. Many evenings were spent together on the deck under the pines, talking about everything and nothing, weaving memories as natural and timeless as the trees themselves. He loved and adored his three girls more than anything in this world and was deeply proud of them, but nothing brought him greater joy than being "Big Daddy" to his grandchildren, James, John, and Julia. After his grandsons were born, he embraced a new role in life–helping care for the twins alongside Melissa, and he continued after Julia's birth. He didn't just rock babies and watch Mickey Mouse Clubhouse; he taught letters, numbers, and colors, shared snacks, and filled mornings with stories and laughter. To his grandchildren, he was both playmate and protector; to Melissa, a steady, loyal partner in raising them. Of all his accomplishments, being Big Daddy was his greatest.
Johnny is survived by his loving wife of 50 years, Vicki Marie Bennett of Crockett; daughter, Melissa and husband, Jamie Allee of Crockett; daughter, Jessica Bennett of Crockett; loved like a daughter, Louise and husband, Brent Penn of Houston; grandchildren, James Bennett Allee of Crockett, John Randall Allee of Crockett, and Julia Harper Allee of Crockett; brother, James "Bruce" Bennett and wife, Margaret of Austin; nephews and nieces, John Henderson Hazlett Bennett and wife, Michaela of Austin, Helen and husband, Roger Carran of New Zealand, Bryce Penn of Houston, and Presley Penn of Houston; along with numerous other loving relatives and friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Leon and Jewell Bennett; and grandparents, John Henderson and Nellie Bitner Hazlett, Earl and Ida Belle Bennett.
