Alessandro Carbonaro Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on May 12, 2006.
Marine Sgt. Alessandro Carbonaro, who died Wednesday from injuries received while fighting in Iraq, made a great impression on all who met him and was an extremely honest and dedicated man, his father said Thursday.
"I never saw him so dedicated" after joining the 2nd Reconnaissance Battalion, 2nd Marine Division, II Marine Expeditionary Force, Camp Lejeune, N.C., Fulvio Carbonaro said of his son. Carbonaro, 28, of Bethesda, died of injuries he sustained May 1 while conducting combat operations in Anbar province of Iraq, the Defense Department said. An IED exploded near a Humvee he was driving, Fulvio Carbonaro said Thursday by phone from Landstuhl Regional Medical Center in Germany, where Fulvio and Gilda Carbonaro went to see their son after he was wounded. Alessandro Carbonaro graduated from Sandy Spring High School in 1997. He enjoyed ice hockey and playing music. He and several friends were in a band that played local shows before he deployed.
He joined the Marines in 1998.
This was Carbonaro's second tour of duty in Iraq. On his first tour, he was hurt in Fallujah and received a Purple Heart. He returned to Iraq in March.
His family said the Marine was totally committed to serving his country and the war effort.
"He only had his job to do and that's all that really mattered," his father said.
Fulvio Carbonaro said doctors at the hospital were deeply moved by his son and are planting a tree in a park near the hospital in his memory.
Through tears, Fulvio said, "Regardless of how people feel, everybody is totally dedicated ... to the people in uniform who sacrifice themselves."
Alessandro Carbonaro is also survived by his wife, who is also named Gilda.

--

Alessandro Carbonaro joined the Marines in 1998. Four years later, while home on holiday, he met his wife-to-be, Gilda, through friends of his parents. "Love at first sight," a family member said.
Gilda was then a student at George Washington University. Her first name is the same as Carbonaro's mother's.
Carbonaro, 28, of Bethesda, Md., died May 10 at a Germany hospital from wounds received May 1 when his Humvee hit a roadside bomb. He suffered burns over 60 percent of his body.
In 2004, Carbonaro took part in the assault on Fallujah, suffering a foot injury from an explosive device. He was assigned to Camp Lejeune and was on his second tour.
Carbonaro, who as a boy hated seeing other children picked on, graduated from high school in 1997. He enjoyed ice hockey and playing music. In his spare time, he and his buddies played in a basement rock band, with Carbonaro on guitar.
When he died, four people _ his father, his mother, his wife and his mother-in-law _ were at his side. "We held him in our arms until he exhaled his last breath," said his father, Fulvio Carbonaro.

I served with Alex many years ago at VMGR-452 in Newburgh, NY, before he became a Force Recon Marine. He was a great guy and I often still think about him and his decision to re-enlist and join Recon during wartime. It was brave and noble and that inspiration has helped me in some challenging times. I was thinking about him today when someone thanked me for my (much safer) service on Veteran's Day. This day is really about people like Alex and his family. The country and all of us owe you a tremendous debt.

Hello,
We realize that we are very late to express our deepest condolences, but we wanted to let your family and friends know that we have made a small donation to Fisher House to honor and remember Alessandro “Alex” Carbonaro US Marine Sergeant. We recognize that this is a humble tribute, but we wanted you to know that it is heartfelt and made possible by thousands of like-minded individuals across the American youth hockey community and beyond. We will not forget. May God Bless you and keep you safe and strong.

Bob, Randy and Charlotte Stephenson send love to Fulvio, Gilda and Alex's family. We were next door neighbors for a time in the eighties and nineties, and still recall the loving devotion the Carbonaro's had for each other and their genuine kindness and affection for their neighbors. It is difficult even now to contemplate the loss of Alex and his gifts to his community and his country.

Dear Eliza, No matter where we are in the world or time of the day Alex is just a thought away, in the noise of a deluge, in the flutter of the wings of a hummingbird, in the fuzzy blue sky of the recent moon. I miss him so much, the pain is still so raw, although I've learned I hide it better. I thank you infinitely for remembering him.

I often visit the numerous sites on the internet that speak of Alex's courage, patriotism and love for family and friends. He will forever be one of my Marines and an inspiration to me and my wife Marne. I will always miss him sleeping on the couch in NY after Sunday dinners when he would just stop by because he missed a home cooked meal and all the laughs we had together. I certainly look forward to the day when our paths will cross again, so I can give him a hug and tell him something that I never had a chance to, Alex I love you brother.

The Wind on The Downs

“I like to think of you as brown and tall,
As strong and living as you used to be,
In khaki tunic, Sam Brown belt and all,
And standing there and laughing down at me.
Because they tell me, dear, that you are dead,
Because I can no longer see your face,
You have not died, it is not true, instead
You seek adventure in some other place.
That you are round about me, I believe;
I hear you laughing as you used to do,
Yet loving all the things I think of you;
And knowing you are happy, should I grieve?
You follow and are watchful where I go.”

(Written by Marian Allen during World War l )

The Other Side

i'm over on the other side
where life and death softly divide.
left my skin and bones behind
now i'm over on the other side.

can you feel me there with you?
my breath is gone but i'm not through.
loved you then and i still do
from over on the other side.

i can fly. really fly.
below the earth ... all through the sky.
tell em all i did not die.
i'm just over on the other side.

it's good here on the other side.
the sweetest songs...the bluest skies.
thank you for the tears you cried
but it's good here on the other side.

i can fly. really fly. below the earth...all through the sky.
tell em all i did not die.
i'm just over on the other side

the world is smaller than a needle's eye.
where life and death softly divide.
when you leave your skin and bones behind
i'll be waiting on the other side.

i can fly. really fly. below the earth ... all through the sky.
go tell em all i did not die.
i'm just over on the other side.

Dear Gilda and Fulvio,

As I trudged through the red clay that was mud in the pouring rain at Arlington on Friday, May 9, I thought of our sons who never slowed down in the harshest of weather while serving in the Marine Corps.

We viewed the funeral of an Army officer in that torrent of cold rain and wind, whose family did not wince as they walked to the gravesite in Section 60.

I have heard the 21-Gun Salute many times over, but the position of the Honor Guard happened to be right in front of us. I was in awe of their reverent precision and respect as they sounded those shots at the burial of yet another Hero. Every movement was in sync without a single error. These young men of The Old Guard, 3rd Regiment, US Army, continue to bring honor and respect to our sons and fathers, husbands, nephews, and friends.

I was glad I had not cancelled my visit due to the weather. To visit the sacred place our sons were placed in such bleakness brought reality to the commitment they had for us.

Thank you for the many tokens of love and remembrance you leave at Cory’s grave. We thought of you, especially, on May 10, as you relived those final moments in your dear son’s spectacular life.

Recently, there was a ceremony in Delaware at which Senator Tom Carper spoke. He stated in a most profound way the real meaning of the loss of these magnificent men like Alex . . .

"To remember our Fallen Heroes is not a question, it is a requirement. For to not remember them would devalue the very future they gave us, their very own futures, so promising and bright."

Our love to you and to Gillie as another year passes,

There is nothing that I can say or do to take away the pain or bring you peace in your time of sorrow, but I will offer you and your family my heart felt condolences. I also offer you my prayers that in time the pain will easy and the memories of your HERO will carry you through each day and night. I want to thank your HERO, for his/her selfless act of becoming a member of the armed forces, his/her willingness to defend the United States of America, all that we hold sacred and for the sacrifice that will forever be etched in the memories of all those who knew him/her. Though tears can never bring him/her back, we hope that our tears express our gratitude for the sacrifice that he/she made and our sorrow at his/her passing. I believe for every fallen HERO there is a star shining brightly up above to remind us of the precious gift we were given.

Your mission on earth is complete and you are now a member of GOD’s Heavenly armed forces. Stand down brave warrior and take your rightful place in Heaven with all the HEROES who have passed before.

I made a special promise to LE RON A. WILSON, a dear family friend who joined the Army with three other friends, one of whom is my son (Le Ron was killed in action on 07/06/07 at the age of 18) on the day he was laid to rest as I touched his coffin, that I would never forget him nor would I forget those that gave their lives for our country before him, with him and after him and so when I came across www.legacy.com, I thought what a great way to keep my promise to Le Ron, so I will continue to leave tributes in each guest book until the day there is no longer the need to leave these tributes to a FALLEN HERO.

this Brave Marine, Sgt. Alessandro Carbonaro,
As a parent, who has lost a daughter suddenly,

The overwhelming heartache that seems to surface
through our shock, as the time passes.

It is also, what often carries us through...

May your Young Hero, Rest Safely, in the Loving Care of God and know that he Will Never Be Forgotten.
I pray that the Peace of God will continue to be with the Carbonaro family.

Dear Gildita, Fulvio & Gilda,

I recently stopped at Landstuhl in route to work in Africa. During my short stay, I visited with both staff and the tree planted in memory of Alex and his colleagues. The tree was wrapped in fabric in order to keep it warm during the harsh German winter. Nevertheless, there it was standing strong looking forward to growing new leaves in the coming week.

Many of the staff said they still visit the tree often. Especially during those difficult days. Alex’s strength and heart was bigger then his body. For even in his absence, people still find strength in him. I will have the Fisher House staff send you a photo of the tree this spring.

Always in my prayers,

Thank You.

“Paid in Full”
To Honor The Service of Fallen and Injured Marines

Marines through and through, they paid the price
Six thousand miles away, we live the life
For which they paid with their blood, spirits and bodies
We will never forget what they paid in full

We hope and we pray that somehow their loved ones find comfort
In God, in the flag, in the memory of their loved ones’ bravery
They’re gone now but we see them still…proud, strong, willing
Covering each other’s backs… courageous, moving forward

What kind of love did they have for us to be willing
To give it all for the Black, White, Jew, Christian, Muslim?
We don’t comprehend but we honor you now and forever
You are Our Marines…some living…some not
Forever in our hearts we will cherish your lives

Lives too short yet immortal they’ll be
Highest brotherhood of the Few, the Proud
They stand at attention, and we gaze with awe
Some know their names not, but our admiration for them
Flows limitless within us, between us

They sacrificed their limbs or their lives
Freedom still rings, a soft sound across the miles
It tolls slowly; all of creation takes note
Of the lives that were lost for people unknown

Out of sight but not lost; forever among us
The starched blues marching straight
Toward the place where we will meet them
Many years from now…how we loved them…
Well done beloved Brothers and Sisters…You’ve paid it in full
Always Faithful Marines, You Have Paid it in Full

Dear Gildita, Fulvio & Gilda,

As we are approaching Thanksgiving I am saddened to think that you will not have your beloved Alex sitting at the table with you. I hope some of the touching memories of holidays past will help sustain you. On Friday when my husband and I are in Washington I will drop off a dozen white roses on Alex’s grave as a small representation of the hearts he touched at Landstuhl. I believe if one rose was left for every heart Alex touched throughout his short life; all of the streets in Washington DC would be filled with roses. He may not be sitting with you at the table this Thanksgiving, but know he is not forgotten.

Dear Gilda and Fulvio; Several of Alex's buddies have come to visit Alex the last week. They were waking around and I asked if I could help and they said they were looking for Alex and Cory and I quickly added each last name. I walked them over to Cory and Alex. You could see how much they were hurting inside. When they were done visiting each one came over to the other side and shook my hand. I let each of them know that they are my heroes. I just know that Alex was happy to see each one.

Dear Cousin Gilda and Fulvio,
Just today, I learned of your son's passing. I was very moved by the news. Today, being Veteran's Day, I remember your son, his new wife, Fulvio and most certainly - you. I am deeply saddened for your loss. How unfortunate that I never had the opportunity of meeting such a brave young man. I have no words to share with you that will give you comfort, but please know that I will pray for you and your family and hope that you may find peace some day soon. May God be with you and continue to give you strength. With deepest sympathy and condolences.

To the Mother of Alessandro Carbonaro:
I am also a mother of a son getting ready to go and serve Iraq and another one that wants to join. I cried for you and your family, prayed for God's loving hand to give you peace in your grief. Only those that have buried their children can understand the depth of the grief a parent feels for their child. Your son made the last sacrifice for his country. Thanks for the beatiful pictures of your son post for all to see. He was bless to have a family like yours.
Muchas Bendiciones para ti y tu bella familia/

I and my family are deeply moved by your son's story, and your loss. My own son has just now returned to Twenty-nine Palms from Iraq, after nearly a hundred convoy missions over half a million miles. He's not home yet. His most shattering comment so far has been that they live with the possibility, even probability of death so much, that they simply focus on the mission and are consoled with the fact that if they die, they'll die among their friends and for them. So sad to know how true it is, and that Alex's story embodies it completely.

I am very touched in reading about Sgt. Carbonaro's story, and his death. He is a good Marine...like every Recon Marine, he had a big heart. The challenges these few STOIC Marines face can only be summed-up by how much they have to endure the pain, to persevere in their struggle to accomplish the task at hand, and sacrificing their life without question.

My sympathies for his passing…

My heart goes out to you, the wife, mother and father, for the loss of such a fine Marine (Husband, son and friend). It is never easy to find the words to express your deepest regrets that you will have lost so very much that can never be replaced; but please remember you have a large extended family (brothers and sisters) of current and Retired Marines. We are "a band of brothers", and will always be there for each and every Marine, and Marine Family.

My deepest sympathy for your loss, from reading these comments it is obvious that the marines who serves with Alex had the utmost respect for him as a man and as a soldier. I also read the article on MSNBC and it is very obvious that he beleived in what he was doing. Thank you Alex for putting your country and her citizens above yourself, if our future is in the hands of others like you, then we are indeed in good hands. Rest soundly and know that you have the thanks of a grateful nation.

I want to convey my deepest sympathies to your family. I too, lost my only child. My thoughts and prayers are with you.

I just wanted to leave a note for Alex's parents. I want to "Thank you" for raising such a true American. I know that your family paid the ultimate price and for that I am sorry. I am a parent of two boys and my husband is currently in the National Guard, waiting to hear if he has to go. I know the fears you felt. I greive with you. Please know that Alex's death is not going unnoticed. He is appreciated for his service for us. God Bless and we will be praying for you.

Dear Carbonaro Family:

Your sacrifice and pain are not in vain.....This great country was built on the back of great men....Your son/husband was truely one of those great heros. I can't help but cry when I try to imagine your pain. I want you to know that your son and all the other soldiers and service people will be honored and remembered for as long as I live....I want my children to know what type of person Alex was.....and I will surely encourage them to honor his legacy.....I have posted Alexs picture at my desk as a daily reminder of his sacrifice....Even though I never met Alex....I look into his eyes and see who he was....Selfless..Honorable..Brave...Loyal..Strong...Dedicated..A true American Hero...I will pray for him and for your family and for the day when the war is over...
