Krishna Chawla Obituary

Driver hits pedestrians, killing one

BY STAN FINGER
The Wichita Eagle

Mohinder and Krishna Chawla enjoyed going for walks in their secluded neighborhood in southeast Wichita.

But their routine walk early Monday morning ended tragically.

Krishna, 67, was killed and Mohinder, 74, was seriously injured when they were struck from behind by a teenager on her way to a school function at 6:08 a.m. The Chawlas were walking east in the same direction as traffic on Mount Vernon near Cooper, just west of Webb Road, Capt. Joe Dessenberger said.

The 16-year-old girl told police she didn't see the Chawlas, who Dessenberger said were walking in the street, until just before the accident. She swerved in an attempt to avoid them, Dessenberger said.

"There was a sidewalk next to the street where they were walking," he said. "That was the unfortunate part of it."

Mohinder Chawla was taken to Wesley Medical Center, where he is in serious condition.

The driver wasn't talking on a cell phone at the time of the accident, Dessenberger said. And he said speed was not a factor.

"It does not appear that she was doing anything other than driving," he said.

Filled with short, winding streets, the neighborhood north of Pawnee between Rock and Webb roads has few through streets.

"It's pretty easy to get lost down there," Dessenberger said.

Krishna Chawla is the seventh pedestrian or bicycle rider to die in an accident so far this year. Her death serves as a tragic reminder of the need to follow basic pedestrian safety rules, Dessenberger said:

• Walk facing traffic, so you can see it and react sooner.

• Walk on sidewalks whenever possible.

• Wear light-colored or reflective clothing when walking early in the morning, late at night or on cloudy days.

Dessenberger said he did not know what the Chawlas were wearing Monday as they went for a walk near their home on Capri Court.

Investigators will present their findings to the Sedgwick County district attorney's office, which will then determine whether any charges should be filed in the case.

What a great lady and what sadness I felt when learning of her death. I taught with Krishna at Mt.St, Mary. She was always smiling, upbeat, energetic, and kind. I had the privilege of working with Krishna two years ago as a member of the office staff at the WATC Dunbar Campus. I remember Krishna as a very dedicated and student-oriented instructor. One evening she invited the evening office staff to an international food party, where her students had brought in dishes based on where they were from in order to better acquaint them with other cultures. She had music and decorations and the students really enjoyed it, but I could tell Krishna was having just as good a time as her students. I'm sure her dedication was reflected in the performance of her students. My prayers are with her family.

We meet and make many friends in our lifetime...but very few friends become family and give unconditional affection and support ...

They stay in our lives for awhile,

leave footprints on our hearts

And we are never, ever the same...

Krishna (or as I called her Varsha Bhabhi) was one such person that came into my life in 1988... I remember her as a very warm & caring person, always a beautiful smile on her face & ALWAYS had encouraging words. Since our move to Dallas, we saw her very few times... but we can honestly say that varsha bhabhi was one of our closest friends in wichita & stayed as such even though we didn't see each other that often. she will always stay fondly alive in our memories. We are very fortunate to have known her. We will miss her deeply.

"I find an old photograph

and see your smile.

As I feel your presence anew,

I am filled with warmth

and my heart remembers a friend"
