Harmon Zeigler Obituary

Harmon Zeigler Harmon died from a massive heart attack in Tacoma on 7/31/2006. Born in Savannah, Georgia on 3/9/1936, he earned his doctorate degree in political science at a remarkably young age, and was proud of his short-lived football career for the Georgia Bulldogs. Harmon was always humbled by all of his accomplishments, and never forced his academic credentials on others. He became an accomplished professor and political science textbook author of over 30 books. He was an author and reader. He was often seen sitting in a chair in the living room reading three or four books at one time. He taught at the University of Oregon for 21 years, and then held an endowed chair at the University of Puget Sound. During his academic career, he and his family traveled to many countries on academic Guggenheims and Fullbrights to research different comparative political systems. Of his leisure travels, he had a special fondness for Paris. His family will always have many fond memories of the opportunities they had throughout his life to travel, enjoy good food, wine, and cultural events. He looked forward to every Wagner Ring Festival attended with his daughter, Amanda. Harmon also had a huge heart for dogs. Once they entered his home, even as a foster dog, they never left. Harmon had many students, colleagues and friends who had immense respect and fond memories of their experiences with him. He had a great sense of humor, even at the expense of himself. He is survived by his wife of 50 years, Pat, son Mike, daughter Amanda (Jim) Garrett, and three very special grandchildren, Ben, Zoe and Ruby. A service will be held Friday, August 4, 2006, 11:00 a.m. at St. Patrick's Catholic Church in Tacoma. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Pierce County Animal Welfare Society, 8504 Chambers Creek Rd., University Place, WA 98467, or St. Patrick's Catholic Church in Tacoma. Condolences may be made online at www.gaffneyfuneralhome.com . Arrangements by Gaffney Funeral Home, 253-572-6003

I was so sad to hear of your loss. Harmon was a hero of mine. He taught me valuable lessons in humility, generosity, enjoying life, fine wine and political intrigue. He encouraged my career as an attorney. We enjoyed many bottles of fine wine and rich discussions. He attend Holly and my wedding in Seattle shortly after I graduated from the University of Puget Sound. I remember fondly Harmon and Pat coming to our home in Renton for a gormet meal of rabbit. Harmon of course brought the Bordeaux. In commemoration of the birth of each of my three children, Harmon encouraged me to research and purchase futures in a case of wine to be opened on their 21st birthday. I could go on. But know he lives on in the hearts of those he touched. God Bless Harmon's family.

A friend and co-author for over 40 years. Harmon's scope and depth of knowledge was unequaled by anyone I have ever known in or out of academe.Above all, he was a warm and caring human being.

Whoever coined the phrase "A gentleman and a Scholar" had to be thinking of Harmon. He was both...in spades.

I was Harmon's first advisee in the Political Science department at UPS. Harmon deeply touched my life and influenced my path by his teachings. I cared about him and loved him, he was like a father to me. My deepest sympathies to the family. I think that having the donations to the animal society in his name is such a "Harmon" thing to do, and a great addition to his memory. I wish I could attend his funeral, but I literally just learned about this now and can’t make it to Tacoma tomorrow, but my thoughts are with all Harmon’s family and friends.

Patty, please know that you and your family are in our thoughts as we remember Harmon and recall those wonderful days of our youth---in high school, at Armstrong. He was a very special person. We will miss him greatly at our next SHS reunion. Patty, I hope your many wonderful memories of the life shared with him help console you in the days and months ahead. Know that I will be thinking of you.

Pat and family. I never got to meet you at the reunions of SHS. Even before we were classmates in High school My father and Harmon's father were friends sharing camellia gardening experiences. My father had a plant nursery that Luther frequented. I also had his mother for one of my English teachers.Very sweet lady. I am living with a husband that has Parkinsons so you and Harmon were blessed with his not suffering long. Prayers and blessings to all of you. Joyce Roberts McCallar.
