Shannon Moore Obituary

MOORE Shannon Hartwick Moore, passionate advocate for animals and active volunteer for many humane organizations in the New Orleans area, died May 31. A lifelong resident of New Orleans and Metairie, Shannon was 36. She was a magna cum laude graduate of Loyola University and, at the time of her death, was a partner with Fitzmaurice & Moore Associates CPAs. Shannon's volunteer work for animals leaves an imprint that survives her. On behalf of the animals she loved, Shannon formed (SOS) Supporters of Save Our Pets. She was instrumental in rallying grassroots support and awareness for the Louisiana Pet Evacuation Bill so that pet owners would never again be forced to abandon their pets in the event of a disaster. She was a driving force behind the People & Pets March to the State Capitol steps this spring, part of a coordinated non-stop push for passage of the bill. Although her possessions had been damaged by Katrina, Shannon's response was to focus on saving the lives of hundreds of the thousands of hurricane stranded animals. She immediately volunteered for food/water programs to sustain displaced pets and strays in the streets. Shannon realized most of the animals she helped rescue and comfort had known warm laps, familiar voices and homes before the hurricanes. She became a Stealth Volunteer and spent countless hours in the challenging quest of reuniting missing pets and their grieving owners. Horses were Shannon's great love. The fate of large animals in the wake of hurricanes Katrina and Rita impacted her deeply. Unable to stand by as horses starved, she became fiercely involved in saving them. It is difficult to estimate the number of truckloads of hay and the huge quantity of food and supplies she moved for animals struggling to survive in Gulf Coast areas. She created the HayThere group to assist hay producers and consumers via an online marketplace for hay and feed goods. One of Shannon's great gifts was an innate ability to bring information, people, transports and supplies together. If all else failed, she'd hop into a vehicle and deliver the feed/ supplies herself. She was a one-woman information clearinghouse. Any animal rescue group that needed statistics, a news story or contact information counted on Shannon. She practiced compassion in an unassuming way that never called for recognition or accolades. Shannon was beautiful, graceful, empathetic, kind, determined, impatient, fun, intelligent, tenacious, gracious, shy, honest, loyal and idealistic. Preceded in death by her beloved dog, Ginson, and her paint mare, Ivy, Shannon is sadly missed by her family. She will be buried at Metairie Cemetery, 5100 Pontchartrain Blvd. on Tuesday, June 6 at 10:00 a.m. Shannon is best honored by acts of kindness and compassion and by passionate efforts to improve animal welfare standards in Louisiana. The family suggests that in lieu of flowers, donations be sent to: Alley Cat Allies ""In Memory of Shannon Moore,'' 7920 Norfolk Ave., Suite 600, Bethesda, MD 20814-2525; http://www.alleycat.org. Dear Shannon, cannot believe 25 years have passed since Katrina. Thankfully, so many things you worked so hard to change...have! You were a warrior and a visionary for the animals. Thank you for everything you have done for them as we now have "No Pets Left Behind" and no one has to leave without their beloved fur baby!

Today, 55 years ago, Shannon was born. The "due date" was Sept. 12, according to the doctor, but Shannon was in a hurry, evidently. She weighed less than 5 pounds, but nurses said she was a fighter, and she was ready to go home after only a few days. Happy memories. Always in my heart.

Hope you are able to see after 12 years from Katrina, how people are able to take their pets with them and how much easier it is to help reunite them with their families if they did have to leave them in Texas. I think it would make you smile!!!

Hi Shannon,
With the anniversary of Katrina many of us are reeling once again with the thoughts and memories that haunt us all. You will forever be a part of all of our memories... All I can hope for is there is in fact a rainbow bridge where we will all see one another again. Please look for my dear Margaret who left me this past Christmas. I hope you are at peace.

Jennie, my thoughts are always with you. I cannot even imagine...

I did not know you, Shannon, but I know of your work. You did so much to help animals and those of us who cherish them. The anniversary of Katrina always brings back a flood of emotions and I always think of you, even though we never met. I volunteered after Katrina, too. It had a profound effect on my life. Reading all that you accomplished with the Pets Act makes me both happy and sad. Happy that you pushed for its passage and sad that I never knew you. I know the Rainbow Bridge was a busy place when they all came to greet you. Rest easy.

Dear Shannon, this is the first year I forgot the date of Katrina. I was reminded by Anita and Mindy and all the wonderful people who are still fighting for the animals. Stealth Volunteers is now offically gone, but Marilyn started a group called Lost Dogs of Texas, so I jumped in and joined her. It is so good to be reuniting families and their pets again. Since July of last year (when we started) we have reunited over 2,000 pets! You would be so proud of us...and we have 4 or 5 other states doing the same thing. Eventually we hope to have all of the states with their own website on Face Book. (So people still have a place to go for help to find their fur babies.) Love you, Shannon. Know you are smiling down on us and what we are doing as you were always encouraging everyone to do what they could.

Dear Shannon,

HAPPY 41st BIRTHDAY,dear Friend. We are but two of many, many, many people who will remember you always -- you are forever in our hearts. What you started continues to get even stronger -- it's your legacy -- but we wish so much that we had YOU here with us to see what came of your "little idea."

Our beloved Bowdeen (Ludwig's litter-mate brother and Sweetie's son) went to the Rainbow Bridge 2 weeks ago. He was 15 1/2 years old -- born in our house, and peacefully died in our house -- never sick a day in his life. Give them all a hug from us, please.

I (Judy)was outside today taking pictures and a butterfly landed on the rose tattoo on my shoulder -- it stayed there for a long time -- several minutes at least. I thought of you and wondered if it WAS you. YOU would do something like that. I really hope it was -- it made me feel very happy.

Rest in peace until we're all together again!

Love and MISS you -- always,

May 31, 2010

Dear Shannon,

I cannot believe that it has been four years since you left our lives. I always think of you on the anniversary of Katrina and the love and compassion that you had for everyone, great and small.

I hope your family has found some peace in knowing how much you were loved and admired by the many people and animals you touched.

We are trying to carry on the compassion and kindness that you started towards the animal movement. I think you would be proud of us. As you know it is not always easy, but our numbers have grown and every day I see another little one rescued somewhere and I remember the miracle that grew out of Katrina.

God bless you, Shannon. RIP.

Hi Shannon,

HAPPY 40th BIRTHDAY, dear Friend. We so desperately wish we could all be together on your Special Day. There will always be an empty place in our hearts -- but the awesome love and kindness you showed to so many, many people and their pets will keep you with us forever.

You blessed every inch of the earth you walked on -- and what you did was like throwing the pebble in the pool -- and watching the rings go on and on eternally. Your kindness and unconditional love is your legacy.

We still burn a candle for you -- and we've saved the pieces that are left when we start a new one -- and someday we'll melt down all those different pieces -- all the colors and fragrances will blend together and make a new candle -- beautiful and totally unique.

Our beloved Ludwig went to the Rainbow Bridge just before Christmas 2008 -- he's undoubtedly found you by now, so please give him a HUG for us.

Rest in peace in Eternal Life until we're all reunited again.

Love and miss you always,

Shirley Mondeaux

Wish you were here with us to share in the excitement of each of the strides that have been made for the animals since Katrina.

RIP and hope you are proud of us and smiling down at each little accomplishment that is being made for all of the animals nationwide now!

Shannon, we all miss you and your dedication.

Hope they're giving you some time off up there or are you the one who has to solve ALL the animal problems? I imagine they have lots of problems, like their wings break down, get stuck in trees, lose feathers. I suppose you already got a bunch of birds to form a committee of advisors on the whole wing situation. I bet you set up an evacuation bill, in case the Challenger gets lost and flies right through your air space. THAT is really bad for wings.

We love you, we miss you, we have not forgotten you. We are carrying on the battle. Full force, not to worry.

Dear Shannon,

Today is your birthday, which explains why it is such a beautiful day here. The sun is shining, the birds are singing, the butterflies are flapping, and the cicadas are zeeeeeeeeeeee'ing. It's a happy day.

I am happy to have gotten to know you, even if only virtually. It is painful to remember you sometimes, it really hurts. But then I remember that expression that says, "grief is the price we pay for having loved". It is simply the other side of the coin, the recognition that everything in life -- even the most beautiful things we love the most--are only temporary and we must love and cherish and care for them while we have the opportunity. Thank you for helping me to better understand that important life lesson and thank you for being Shannon.

My hugs and warm wishes go out to Shannon's mother, her family and friends who are missing her.

Dear Shannon,

Rest in peace!

July 7, 2007

Hey Shannon,

You'll ALWAYS be in our hearts and prayers! Your hugs and paw-prints (and hoof prints) have covered the face of the Earth.

The HOPE you helped create for soooo many Katrina victims is still being passed around and around -- and gets stronger each time it's passed on. We've had some awesome reunions this past year that are nothing short of MIRACLES -- and you're always there with us when we're crying those happy tears of JOY!

We spent the entire summer of '06 in Louisiana -- cried when we left -- and brought 2 "Orphans of the Storm" back to New York -- one is our 6th "kid" and the other was adopted by a good Friend.
Soon we'll be moving back to Louisiana forever.

It's good to see that so many others have saved your emails and voice-mail messages. You never really left us -- you're just saving animals and "doing business" from a different Location.
Rest in the arms of God until we're all re-united again.

Hugs,
