Ben Weider Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Oct. 18, 2008.
MONTREAL -- Ben Weider -- Canadian bodybuilder, businessman and internationally-renowned Napoleonic scholar and philanthropist -- died Friday at the Jewish General Hospital in Montreal.

His death came six days before he was to inaugurate the permanent gallery housing his multi-million dollar Napoleon collection at the Montreal Museum of Fine Arts.

He was 85.

Weider published several books on Napoleon and contended that the French emperor was poisoned in exile on St. Helena.

In his more than sixty years of involvement in bodybuilding, as Founding President of the International Federation of Body Builders (I.F.B.B.). Weider and his older brother Joe anticipated, then led, the worldwide fitness revolution and legitimized the sport of bodybuilding.

The I.F.B.B., founded by the Weiders in 1946, has 173 member national federations worldwide and sanctions thousands of amateur and professional competitive events.

"I don't know of anyone who, starting with nothing . . . did as much as he did," said his biographer, Mike Steere. "To do what he did, to accomplish what he did in face of poverty and prejudice, is nothing short of heroic."

Ben Weider was born in Montreal Feb. 1, 1923, to Jewish Polish immigrants. He and his brother Joe dropped out of grade school to support the family. He worked in garment sweatshops and restaurants before enlisting in the Canadian Army and serving during World War II.

Originally, Weider wanted to be an architect, but because he was Jewish he was denied entry-level positions in Montreal architecture firms. He worked with his brother Joe to put out a physique magazine and helped him operate his mail-order business in weightlifting equipment.

Weider became the promoter and producer of physique contests and travelled the world as an ambassador of bodybuilding, introducing the sport overseas and organizing new national federations of the I.F.B.B. In 1947, Joe moved to New Jersey, later moving the U.S. Weider enterprises to Southern California, while Ben remained in Montreal.

Weider is survived by his wife, Huguette Derouin, and their three sons Louis, Eric, and Mark.

His funeral will be held Monday afternoon at Papermans and Sons funeral home in Montreal.

My sincere condolences to Mrs Weider and family in their loss of husband and father Ben. I had the privelege and honor to work for this famous man for several years as a manufacturers sales agent located in Winnipeg. My greatest moment and memory of him was when he visited Winnipeg some years ago to attend seminars at the many Eatons stores in the city. During the lunch break, he asked me if I knew where Louis Riel was buried, he said that his son Mark was very interested in the history of Louis Riel and would like to take a picture back to Montreal for his son's collection. I gladly drove him to St Boniface Basilica graveyard and found Mr Riels grave. Mr Weider asked me to take a picture of him standing beside Louis Riels grave stone. I took the picture and thought to myself that this man Ben Weider, an entrepreneur, an author, sucessful businessman, one who met and dealt with great people of worldly powers, all over the world was still at heart a very warm family man who would not forget to take time to do something nice for his own son.

To the entire Weider family,we would like to extend our deepest sympathy over the passing of Ben. I cannot imagine where the sport of bodybuilding would be today if not for the work of Ben Weider! At this years Arnold Classic, I had the good fortune of meeting this great man. He listened intently to everything I had to say, ignoring the throngs of people around us and I believe that was Ben's greatest gift. From dignitaries to everyday people he made you feel special! Dear Weider family,

I am truly sorry for your loss. Nothing can prepare a family for a tragedy such as this and no amount of words can make the pain go away. Ben was a great man who inspired many from all walks of life. His lifetime work has made him immortal, just like the historical figure for whom he cared so much.

I would like to send my condolences to Ben’s family and to express my deep gratitude for the good he did for me and from which I still reap benefits to this day.

I met Ben in the mid -fifties when I went to his Colonial street office to buy a beginners set of weights; at the time I was twelve and had a newspaper route in the area. Not only did I get a good deal on the weight s but a new customer to deliver to. I remember the office as being rather ordinary (no Napoleonic memorabilia at that time)- except for a large 160 plus pound dumbbell on the floor that Louis Cyr , the famous Quebec strongman, had done a one arm press with. After a few months of working out at home Ben kindly arranged for me to train for free at a gym, that he was partners in with Billy Hill (Mr Canada 1954), in exchange for doing a bit of tidying up there. Training at the gym helped give me a good solid foundation in bodybuilding and fitness as well as aided in my developing a healthy sense of self confidence. All have served me well to this day. Ben manifested many other acts of generosity towards me and for this I am very grateful.

Thank you Ben for all you have done for me.

To Huguette and family,

Ou deepest condolences to you in your time of loss. I first met Ben when we purchased the rights to reprint his book in the Reader's Digest magazine book section in the 1990s.

My husband and I were thrilled to be invited to your home for several Christmas parties and to have a first-hand look at Ben's passion for Napoleon. More importantly, we valued the opportunity to spend some time with you, Ben and also be introduced to some lovely people.

My husband, Bruce has long been involved with amateur wrestling and the YMHA's facilities in the Ben Weider Centre enable the Montreal wrestling team to train undisturbed and in an outstanding environment.

We've long since moved from Montreal to the Yukon, but the bottle of private-labeled wine he gave us one Christmas still remains in our wine rack as a fond memento of an outstanding Canadian and superb human being.

I was very sad to hear about Ben, who was a wonderful man. I had the honor and the pleasure to know him for over ten years and he played a great role in my life. He supported my early efforts to establish the Napoleonic Society of Georgia and helped organize the International Napoleonic Congress in Tbilisi, Georgia. Due to his generous support of the Napoleonic program at Florida State University, a generation of scholars was (and will be) able to conduct research and complete their work. I was one of them, a young student from an impoverished country who could hardly dream of pursuing his goal of studying Napoleonic history. Yet, through Ben's support, I was able to accomplish this goal and I will be forever grateful to him. I had the greatest respect for him, his generous nature and dedication for the Napoleonic studies. Ben, thank you, a thousand thank you, for everything you did!

The world has lost a great man in Ben Weider. He was a person that spent his life helping and giving to others, and was very modest when accolades were given to him. Some might say that to live for 85 years is a full life. But for an individual like Ben, it was way too short. Goodbye Ben, we will all miss you.

This note is written on behalf of my parents Joe and Sarah Pomerantz of Montreal. I met Mr. Weider many years ago as a child at the Y, but I have "known" of him and his brother Joe for as long as I can remember. My father and Ben and Joe were teen age friends, lifting "weights" (really car differentials because that's what they could afford at the time) together in their backyard. One of my father's long held prized photos is of he and Ben on a lake together as young men...My father always spoke of -and still does-the Weiders' life achievements with only the greatest respect and admiration...and because of my father's admonition to me early on and the Weiders commitment to health and exercise, working out and staying in shape has remained a life long daily routine of mine. To the Weider family: there are few greater legacies than to know your loved one has touched so many lives. Be well.

Every choice we make has an impact on our lives. When hunger strikes, we can reach for a healthy, nutritious snack, or we can choose the sugar high of junk food. If you are interested in living a richer, fuller life, there is a foundation upon which you can base all of your decisions which can make life better not only for you, but also for all around you. This foundation is to choose based on what’s best for all. Dear Huguette
A tragic and shocking loss to find Ben has suddenly passed away.
An exceptional gentleman, indeed a great privilege to have had his friendship. The time we spent together was precious. I treasured every moment, Ben was a tower in many areas, high above all of us.
It is painful the thought that we will not see him again.
However G-D has given us a treasure to enjoy, to admire, to be with, to contribute to society
and than HE took the treasure back to HIMSELF.
We were fortunate, may you and the family be comforted to have had a man like Ben in your life.

To the Family of Ben Weider,

It is with great sadness that I learned of Ben’s unexpected death. I had been looking forward to meeting him in person in Montreal this week, at the opening of the new Napoleon galleries at the Musée des Beaux-Arts. Although I never got to meet him face-to-face, we have had regular contact via e-mail since I assumed the professorships which bear his name. His loss will be felt deeply by all those involved in Napoleonic studies, a field which he did so much to shape. On behalf of the Institute on Napoleon and the French Revolution and the entire Florida State University community, please accept my sincere condolences.

October 20, 2008

To Huguette and all the Weider family,

Ben had friends all around the world - North and South, East and West - and he gave them all individual attention, something very rare in life.

More than thirty years ago, when I was in Quebec politics, I responded publicly but gently to someone over the right (and it seemed to me) obligation to try to learn and speak both French and English in Quebec and wherever possible in Canada, I received a letter of support, thanks and appreciation from Ben Weider, whom I did not then know personally.

We became friends and I was particularly struck, not only by his concern for his friends but by his generosity towards them.

As a collector, I admired his Napoleonic collection. Once, I asked if I could bring some friends to see the collection and afterwards we would take him out to dinner. Ben in his authoritative manner said “Of course, but let me look after it.” We arrived at his home at the approved time (nine persons) and he had brought in a cook and two waiters to serve us canapés and champagne and then a superb dinner, whilst we were all amazed by his collection of art and Napoleonic mementos. Included was the hat, which Napoleon had worn in the attack on Russia and the withdrawal in defeat. The hat was lined for winter and was the only, so known, hat. We were all permitted to hold the silver tray on which it was placed and to have our pictures taken. Throughout Ben talked enthusiastically and with admiration about Napoleon, his life etc.

Enthusiasm and dedication was a Ben Weider trade mark. Once I said approvingly “Ben you are a frustrated Napoleon.” He instantly replied “Who’s frustrated?”

Ben made great contributions to the sport of weightlifting, to society and to understanding between peoples, all the while having that very personal touch towards all those whom he met.

He will be truly missed.

To the Weider family, I wish to offer my sincerest condolences on the passing of a great man.

I met Ben Weider in the early '80's when I was volunteering at the Westbury Y. I was interested in working with seniors and introducing them to the world of weight training.

Upon my first day on the job, I came to realize that the gym was insufficently stocked as there were no lighter weights for my new students to work with. I put a call in to Mr. Wieder and was given an immediate appointment.

Upon meeting Ben, I was taken by his sincerity and support of my quest in teaching bodybuilding to seniors and the fact that within a weeks time, more then triple of my requested list of requirements was shipped over to the Y without question.

I then went back to see Ben and thank him for supporting our cause as he was the most receptive and kind man. He offered me a potential future in bodybuilding to which overwhelmed me but wasn't to be part of my future. This to me was the biggest compliment that I had ever received~

I shall always remember how sincere and gratious this man was and how I had never met a more generous man.
I shall always remember Ben Weider as being a remarkable and kind soul.
Again, my deepest condolences on Ben's passing.

Best,

Dear, Madame Weider, my old friend Louis, Eric and Mark,

I am truly saddened by your loss and I offer you my sincerest condolences.

Mr. Weider was a bright and interesting man. I feel extremely fortunate to have known him and to have been touched by him.

I'd like to share this story with you. Last year, my daughter Rebekah needed to do a report on an influential historical leader. Having remembered the stories both Mr. Weider and Louis had shared with me of Napoleon, I suggested to her that he would be ideal for the project. I shared those same stories and described the amazing Napoleon artifacts I remember viewing at the Weider home. She did in fact choose him and thoroughly enjoyed the project.

Louis, our calling took us on different paths in our adulthood. Yet some of the fondest memories of my youth are the times I spent with you and in the Weider home.

May your father's legacy continue through you and your brothers. May Hashem comfort the entire Weider family through this difficult period.

If you find the time, I'd love to talk to you. Email me at [email protected]

I met Ben Weider when, in the late 70s as a young federal food inspector, I was sent to pull a "liquid protein" supplement product from his shelves. No one likes to see the feds coming, and even less when they show up to clear shelves of product.

What impressed me about Mr Weider was his humility, cooperative spirit and basic human decency: he made it seem a pleasure to receive my unexpected visit!

He complimented me on my professional style, ordered the removal of all product, which I oversaw, then gave me a "royal tour" which included his sumptuous red office and the revelation of the painting behind the velvet drapes.

And until I left the feds, a Christmas card addressed in my name, signed by Mr Weider, would arrive at the office every year, featuring a reproduction of a Napoleonic painting from his collection.

This true gentleman must have left a similar lasting impression on hundreds of thousands of others who were honoured to meet him, however briefly. No wonder he achieved greatness.

My condolences to the family.

It is 6:00 am in the early morning of Sunday October 19, 2008. A great man named Ben Weider "fell", his legacy will live forever and ever. What a man, what a mensh Montreal has seen and has lived through this man's accomplishment is legendery. His obituary sums it up in one full page. You need books and books written about him and a whole "telephone directories names" to know whose life he touched while on this planet. For sure, he made a difference and he made this planet a better place than the one he was born in. Hats off for a figure head, it gives us "hope" that men of his calibre and his hopes and his vision and his tenacity (re. his Napoleon search details ) still exist. What a mensh, what a great loss for humanity yet his mere existence of 85 years in this little world of ours brought immense joy and health to millions of people who believed in him and who followed his dreams. I rest my case -- he is a man of the century for this city he was born in : Montreal, Que. Canada. May he rest in peace and may his close circle of family and friends be spared further sorrows!
