Josh Napper Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Apr. 6, 2010.
Josh Napper was a hulking man with a simple claim to fame: He could bench press more than 500 pounds.

"If there was any way he could, he could have moved half that mountain," said Napper's cousin, Timmy Davis Jr. "That's about all he did was lift weights."

The 25-year-old Napper came to work in the coal mines just two months ago after working in the health care industry in his hometown of Rutland, Ohio, Davis said.

"He made decent money in Ohio," Davis said. "He just knew it was more money underground. He came here for the money."

Napper lived in Giles, W.Va., with his grandparents and spent his days off with his infant daughter, Davis said.

Josh Napper was one of 29 miners killed April 5, 2010 by a huge explosion in an underground coal mine owned by Massey Energy Co. in West Virginia - the worst U.S. mining disaster since 1970.

I worked with Josh when he was a nursing assistant. The patients loved him as did the other staff. I don't think he ever met a stranger or someone he didn't like. He always went beyond his duties to make sure his patients were taken care of. WOW, what a loss. Truely a great guy! My thoughts and prayers go out to you and your family.

I am a member of Massey in Richmond, VA and I am so very sorry for your loss. I can't imagine what your family is and has been going through over the past two weeks but please know you are thought of and prayed for daily.

This is such a tragic ending to what sounded like an amazing life. I pray with time your family's pain eases and you can smile remembering all the wonderful memories you surely have.

These guys worked so hard and were just awesome. A few of us flew to WV in October of 2007 and toured the mines, all the guys were all so nice and funny, it was eye opening to see what they did day in and day out underground.

Again please know you are thought of daily.

Bless You

Napper family:

May you find peace in knowing that the story you relayed regarding Josh and his rededication to Christ on Easter Sunday has been a blessing to so many people. It seems so many people are talking about it. Maybe it helped some soul to see their need and that is the purpose Josh served in this life. Prayers are sent on your behalf and the other families as well.
