Belva Plain Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Oct. 18, 2010.
TRENTON, N.J. (AP) - Belva Plain wrote more than 20 best-selling novels over several decades, an achievement she began working toward only after her children grew up and she became a grandmother.

When she died in her sleep Tuesday at her home in New Jersey at age 95, more than 28 million copies of her books were in print.

Her first novel, "Evergreen," was published in 1978 and spent more than 40 weeks on The New York Times best-seller list, and it was developed into a popular TV miniseries.

She wrote, in longhand on a yellow pad, epic novels of family and forgiveness that were adored by her fans but often received less than enthusiastic reviews from critics.

Writing had always been a passion for the New York City native, an only child who graduated with a history degree from Barnard College. She spent her childhood summers amid the bucolic comfort of the family's home in New Canaan, Conn., where she learned to milk cows and frolicked w ith her dog, an Irish setter named Barry.

"She was really a county girl at heart," said her daughter, Barbara.

As a teenager, she enjoyed writing poetry and as a young woman wrote short stories for many major magazines.

But her plans to write a novel were put on hold when, at a dinner party, she met Irving Plain, an aspiring doctor who became a prominent ophthalmologist. They married in 1939 and soon had three children, and the family settled in South Orange.

Plain decided to devote herself to her family, putting their needs ahead of her writing.

She didn't have the time to write a novel, she said, but later in life she realized that she was making excuses, saying in retrospect that "I didn't make the time."

"Evergreen" followed the saga of a young girl who trades the desperate squalor of rural Poland for the teeming slums of New York, where she is torn between the love and ambitions of two men.

She recently completed work on "Heartla nd," a sequel to "Evergreen" due to be published in February.

"Belva's stories spoke to the hearts and lives of millions of readers for decades," said Shauna Summers, senior editor of Ballantine Bantam Dell, Random House, which published Plain's works. She told The Star-Ledger of Newark that Plain "wrote about family and friendship - the things that matter most."

Besides her children, Plain is also survived by six grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

The first book I read of this author is "Her Father's House". I really enjoyed it. I thought at the time it should be made into a movie. I googled on line to see if she had more books I could get. She was a excellent writer.

I too cherish Mrs. Plain's Books. Have been reading them since I found the Book "Evergreen" in Library in 1990. Yesterday January 23, 2016 in Library I searched the shelf hoping there was another book written by her before her passing in 2010 that I never had bought and read and didn't know about. And was so pleased to find the book "Heartwood" on the Library shelf. Was so sorry to hear of her(my favorite writer) passing back in 2010. Brenda Mallard/Kirkland, Washington

I only just learned of Belva Plain's passing moments ago when I read the inscription on her last book, "Heartwood", which I recently picked up at my library. I have read nearly all of her novels and I have enjoyed each and every one of them. I feel inexplicably sad to learn this is her final one. She was a talented writer and I will sorely miss her. May God bless you, Belva, and my sincere condolences to your family. You touched my heart with your work.

I just discovered Belva Plain when a stranger at Barnes and Noble recommended her books. I read "Evergreen" and am now hooked. I was so saddened to hear of her death! How wonderful that she has left such beautiful achievements in her writing. She must have been an amazing woman to put so much heart in her work. As a Jew and former New Yorker, I particularly like the variety of Jewish characters she creates. My condolences to her family and friends.

I have loved Ms. Plain's books for many, many years, ever since Evergreen. I just learned of her death when I got her most recent book from the library a few days ago. I was telling the librarian what a treat it always is to find a new Belva Plain and that I hoped that she would live forever. Then, I noticed that she died last fall. What a blow to her family and what sadness for her readers, too. Let me offer my condolences to her children and grandchildren. Such loss is hard to bear, but I know that your happy memories will offer comfort in the years to come.

A wonderful author! I discovered "Evergreen" almost 30 years ago and have collected every book of Belva Plain since then. She brought to life the most amazing characters in every one of her stories. My favorite was her first heroine in "Evergreen." I so loved the character of Anna and the lives of Anna's family that Mrs. Plain shared with her readers. She wove together generations of Anna's family through several books, tying them to historical events and revolutionary times. I have mixed feelings on the upcoming "Evergreen" sequel. I am excited at becoming re-acquainted with old friends but it is coupled with a sadness knowing this will be my last time with them.
You have brought many years of joy to me with your storytelling, Mrs. Plain, and for that I thank you. I will miss you. May God bless you and your family.

To the family of Belva Plain: After reading Evergreen, I sought out every book authored by Belva I could find, most of which I could not put down. In an era when so much of the literature that is published contains offensive language and sexual habits, Belva did not include these and did not need them. Her stories were beautifully written and I am one avid reader who will miss her. Treasure your memories; she must have been a wonderful person.
