Ann Sperry Obituary

SPERRY--Ann, sculptor and feminist, died peacefully at home on November 27 of leiomyosarcoma. By her side were her husband, tenor Paul Sperry, sons Ethan, Joshua, and Raphael, daughters-inlaw Siri, Ilinisa, and Laura, and grandchildren Max, Cayesh, Milo, Solomon, Rebecca, and Diran. She will be sorely missed by her family and many recent and life-long friends. Ann's steel sculptures transformed toughness into softness, femininity and beauty. They adorn the collections of the Storm King Arts Center, the Skirball Museums in Los Angeles and Cincinnati, the Rose Art Museum at Brandeis and many others; her large sitespecific sculptures are installed in Seattle, Boston, Aspen, and other places. She served on the board of Volunteer Lawyers for the Arts and the Sculpture Center (contributions to either would be welcome) as well as in political campaigns from Eugene McCarthy's to Barack Obama's. A memorial service will be announced.

I met Ann this past year at a support group for patients with advanced cancer at Sloane Kettering. Her inner strength to combat her illness was evident, she gave encouragement to a young woman artist in our group to pursue her art, talked about the great love of her family, was using her art to create gifts for her grandchildren, and was an inspiration to me. My deep consolences to her dear family and friends.

I am grateful to have had the opportunity to get to know Ann over the time that we worked together. She was a delightful woman of amazing vision and strength. The pain of her death is tempered only by the knowledge that her final day was conducted on her terms and surrounded by her loving family. I will miss her very much.

I miss Ann already and believe I always will. She was an exceptional woman, friend, and artist and built a wonderful family with Paul. The legacies, the memories she leaves behind are very rich.

I send heartfelt condolences to the Sperry family. As a young woman, I had the great privilege of working for Ann, and watching her balance her exciting career with her busy home life. Her art and her family thrived -- and I remember the boundless diligence and love with which she addressed both. This made a tremendous impact on me. I am grateful to have known her.

We're saddened to learn of Ann's passing. She was a joyful spirit planning the events around the marriage of our children, Ilinisa and Joshua. Ann provided loving mentoring to our daughter, Sami, an artist in the making. We cherish the photo of our smiling grandson, Cayesh, surrounded by Ann, Paul, Nancy and Peter in the Mission District last year. We're grateful that Ann could be present at Diran's Bris some weeks ago through the long reach of Skype.

I loved her dearly, admired her devotion to her family, her friends, her work and to other artists. We will all miss her very much.

I am shocked to read about Ann's death. I have admired her sculpture for many years and had the privilege of visiting her studio. She was a great supporter of women artists through her contributions to organizations and publications. But it was her work that truly added to the great history of women artists. I haven't seen Ann in a while and am sorry not to have known she was ill. I extend my sympathies to her husband and the rest of her family. Her presence will be missed. I hope a major retrospective of her work can be mounted in the near future.
