Edward H. Blitzer

BLITZER--Edward H. Lightolier is saddened with the death of Edward H. R. Blitzer who passed away last Tuesday peacefully at home. Ed Blitzer is fondly remembered by all of us at Lightolier for his enormous contributions for over 43 years and his thoughtful leadership. Ed began his career as a salesman in 1938 with Lightolier, a company founded by his grandfather, Bernhard Blitzer, in 1904. Ed was elected President of Lightolier in 1956, succeeding his father, Moses M. D. Blitzer, and became Chairman of the Board in 1966. Noted for his uncanny ability to select and nurture management talent, Ed led Lightolier during a period of fivefold growth and expansion throughout North America. During this period, Lightolier substantially broadened its product offerings and acquired facilities across the United States and Canada, including the company's current headquarters in Fall River, Massachusetts. He was instrumental in the company's Initial Public Offering in 1968, maintaining the practices that built the company, while significantly expanding its reach. When Lightolier was faced with a hostile takeover in 1981, Ed's calm and deliberate leadership helped to orchestrate an acquisition by the Bairnco Corporation that preserved the company's identity, continued its autonomy, and retained the fundamental beliefs centered on strong relationships with customers and employees. Edward Blitzer retired as Chairman of the Board of Lightolier in 1981.
