Joseph Martorano Obituary

MARTORANO--Joseph, M.D. Born on the Fourth of July, 1936. Dr. Joe -beloved psychiatrist, author, painter, and pioneer in the treatment of PMS -succumbed to lung cancer, at home, in Malibu, CA, surrounded by family and at peace. The quintessential New Yorker, Joseph was born on the Lower East Side, a Stuyvesant graduate, Union College and later completing his medical training at SUNY Downstate, followed by a residency at Bellevue and Columbia. He served as clinical faculty at Columbia, Cornell, NYU, and Rockefeller University, but devoted the majority of his career to his clinical practice of psychopharmacology. Dr. Joe lived and breathed New York. His contributions to psychiatry are manifold, but he will be remembered most for his remarkably kind spirit and unassuming demeanor. Most passionate about family, friends, patients, and artistic endeavors, Dr. Joe always found time for cycling, and the Yankees. He is survived by his wife of 44 years, Maureen, two sons, Gerard and David, and daughter-in-law, Melissa. A memorial service for friends and family will be held at Icosahedron Gallery (27 North Moore St. 212966-3897) on September 23, 2007, at 3pm. Immediately after the service, a silent auction (Preview at 1pm) of his unsold works, to benefit the Police Athletic League of NY.

I was a patient of Dr. Joe´s back in the 1980´s. He helped me soooo much! I was was just recommending his book to a friend today and found that he had passed and I wanted to offer his family my condolences, albeit very late.

I can't believe Joe has been gone over one year. I am grateful, his lessons have stayed with me. I will always remember his love for books and reading, his writing, cycling, painting and his passion for helping people. My prayers are with his family now and always. Chris Martin and I still talk about Joe and will always remember him fondly.

My deepest and sincere condolences to the whole family. I am profoundly saddened by the news of Joe's sickness and death.

I personally knew and saw Joe for the past 10 years and my father, Len has known him for 20 + years. He was not only a physician to us but a true, caring friend. He provided great counsel and assisted me tremendously. I looked forward to and will miss our mundane/routine visits that became, among other things, sound-off sessions on New York sports teams. Sending warm sympathy, best wishes and kind regards to the Martorano family.

Dear Maureen, David and Gerard-- Joe was an incredible human being to his patients, this was obvious in his deep comittment and caring. He had the ability to provide crucial guidance and help, with warmth, and a lack of formality. His incredible spirit, and joy for life, make it diffcult to imagine a world without him it it-- I am grateful to have known him.

I am so fortunate to have known Dr. Martorano. He is one of the most giving, compassionate, caring and honest people I have ever met. His demeanor and sense of humor got me to where I am today and for that, I am forever grateful. I can only hope that he knows how much he did for me.

My deepest sympathies go out to Joseph and his family. Although I only knew him for a few years, I know he was a kind, thoughtful, caring and intelligent man. He made a huge impact in my life.
