Constantin Papadopoulos Obituary

PAPADOPOULOS-Constantin D., M.D., 1929-2007. Born in Cairo, Egypt, Constantin D. Papadopoulos received his bachelor of science degree and medical degree, Summa Cum Laude, from the University of Louvain, Belgium. After a short internship in Paris, France and at the French Hospital in Manhattan, he began a long association with The Brooklyn Hospital Center where he started as a surgical resident in 1955 and rose to Chief of Vascular Surgery in 1963 until his retirement in 1998. He was president of the Brooklyn Surgical Society, member of the Steering Committee for the Federation of Cardiovascular Clinics of the New York Heart Association from 1969-1979. He was a member of the New York Cardiovascular Society, Diplomat of the American Board of Vascular Surgery, Clinical Professor of Surgery, New York University, Clinical Professor of Surgery at SUNY and International Society of Cardiovascular Surgery, having studied under Dr. Michael Debakey, he was a member of the Michael E. Debakey Cardiovascular Society, Eastern Vascular Society, Society for Clinical Vascular Surgery, American College of Surgeons, New York Academy of Medicine and many others. Dr. Papadopoulos, a professor of vascular surgery was an avid teacher having trained in excess of 140 chief residents in surgery and 18 fellows in vascular surgery. With 22 vascular surgical publications and unparalleled clinical experience, Dr. Papadopoulos rose to the rank of clinical professor of surgery in 1985 and was the first surgeon to be certified in vascular surgery by the American Board of Surgery in the borough of Brooklyn and was recertified in 1993 at the age of 64. In 1962, through his efforts, the first vascular laboratory was created at the Brooklyn Hospital Center, the first such facility in New York. Through his efforts and his keen interest in what was new, in 1991 the first endovascular suite in New York State was created at the Brooklyn Hospital Center. In 1995, Constantin Papadopoulos, M.D. was awarded the prestigious Walter E. Reed Medal given to those who carry on a tradition of excellence and commitment. Constantin Papadopoulos passed away on Wednesday, October 31st in Greenwich, Connecticut and is survived by his wife Julie, sons Dimitri and Tomas and daughter Tara. A viewing will be held from 2-4pm and 7-9pm on Monday and Tuesday, November 5th and 6th with a memorial service being held at 8pm, Tuesday November 6th. Viewing and memorial service will be held at the Frank E. Campbell Funeral Chapel, 1076 Madison Avenue at 81st Street in New York City, Telephone: 212-288-3500.
