LOVELAND--Genevra Kay, known as Kay to her family and friends, died of cancer 25 August in Seattle, Washington. She was 66. She is survived by her mother, Sydney Cook, her sister Dana Baker, her brother Kyle Rosene, and their children and grandchildren. She had an honorary brother and sister as well, Bruce and Carole Stock. She was preceded in death by her beloved partner of thirty-one years, Stelyani Sandris. Kay received her law degree with honors from the University of Texas and had a distinguished career in the law, spending the last thirteen years before her 2007 retirement at the Federal Judicial Center in Washington, D.C., where she was in charge of production of many highly admired educational programs for the federal courts and was noted for her graceful and forceful writing on legal topics. While at the National Center for State Courts in 1989-1992, she also co-authored a book, Managing Notorious Cases, a well-known handbook. In partnership with Ms. Sandris she produced two award-winning films: Farenthold, on the second campaign of Frances "Sissy" Farenthold for the governorship of Texas, 1977, and More Than The Music, 1984, about a concert by pianist Mona Golabeck at a California women's prison. She wrote a book, Stella's Story; Fight For Life Against A Malignant Brain Tumor, and edited her partner's memoirs Greek Soul, Memories Of A Detroit Childhood. Kay was deeply interested in political matters and worked in various capacities for state and federal politicians and for a number of legal causes and issues. Her wide-ranging interests in these and in women's issues led her to make many friends and colleagues in Washington and California. She was a role model and mentor for a number of young women, as an example of what one woman could make of her life. Her love of travel made her many friends internationally. Few of those who met her will ever forget her. A memorial service will be held for Kay at the Spiritual Center, American University, 17 November at 10:30am. A luncheon will follow. Anyone wishing to speak at the service or to attend the luncheon should contact Lisa Fuentes at
[email protected] or by phone at 202-222-6387. In lieu of flowers, her friends ask that any contributions be made in her name to the Freedom From Hunger Foundation or the Astraea Foundation of New York. In addition, she asked that her friends remember her whenever they are dancing.
