In the last chapter of YANKEE FOR LIFE, Bobby's final three words are ... "new wonderful life." Yes, Bobby, your with God and enjoying a joyful reunion with family and Yankee teammates who preceeded you to that glorious new life that is eternal. Until we meet again ....

Bobby was my idol as a boy in the early '70's. I wrote a poem in his honor. Here it is.......
Bobby and a Boy 07/21/08
It was the other day
I was having a good time
Heard the news….. It was about Bobby
A silent sadness set in and a tear I did shed
Then, he was back up to bat like before
I was back in a long forgotten place
Oh, the happy thoughts of when I was a boy
Inspired I was by his majestic swing
But, I lost a huge part of me
You see,
A young boy’s hero gracefully said goodbye
That boy was me
Never met him, yet he said “hi” every day
I often heard him over these many years
I answered with a knowing grin
Hope he remembers me
A long homer he might hit for me
In that better place he went
My world is smaller for a while
But, here is the thing –
Bobby Murcer made me a dreamer
And a Yankee fan for life.
That is about all you need to know
Going, going, see ya…..

Bobby Murcer was a hero in our family growing up as kids in the 70's watching our favorite team, the Yankees. We never missed a game when aired on TV. He was special and one of the greatest baseball players of all time. Our heart sank deeply when we heard the sad news. We love you Bobby, forever.

I pray for the family of Bobby Murcer at this difficult time. I did have the pleasure of watching Bobby play baseball and broadcast it. I heard how sick he was during a recent broadcast, but hung in there till the end. I have nothing but respect for this couragous man. I wish I could have met him. Rest in Peace, Bobby.

DEAR MURCER FAMILY, I AM SO SORRY FOR THE LOSS OF YOUR HUSBAND, DAD, UNCLE, FRIEND. I MUST TELL YOU THIS STORY WHEN I WAS 8 YEARS OLD. I WROTE BOBBY A LETTER TELLING HIM HOW MUCH I LOVED HIM AS MY FAVORITE YANKEE. IN TURN I RECEIVED A COPY OF AN AUTOGRAPHED TEAM PICTURE OF THE 1970 YANKEES. I WILL NEVER FORGET THAT. I WILL BE 46 YEARS OLD THIS AUGUST AND I STILL TELL PEOPLE THIS STORY. I WILL ALWAYS TREASURE THAT MEMORY. HE IS A TRUE HERO AND A GREAT YANKEE. MY PRAYERS ARE WITH YOU.

My deepest sympathy to the Murcer Family. Bobby touched so many people with his friendly, positive way, dazzling smile, and genuine concern for others. Growing up on Long Island, I became
a huge Yankee fan the day I turned
on the tv and saw Bobby Murcer up
at bat. I was a 13 year old girl and
instantly developed a crush on him.
There was a real genuiness about him, he was just very likeable.
You'll be terrribly missed but never
forgotten!

My first sports idol, the only Yankee worth watching in the days of the early 70s. His trade to SF was one of the worst days of my then young life. My sincere condolences to the Murcer family. Bobby was one of those people that we need more of on this earth, but I am sure that his spirit is making heaven an even better place than it was before. Bobby was one major reason why I became a Yankee fan in the late 60's.

I became a Bobby Murcer fan when Bobby played right field for the Chicago Cubs in the late 1970's. I had the honor and privilege of meeting him when he was playing for the Cubs.
One of my last memories of him was after he was traded back to the Yankees. The Yankees came in to play the White Sox and of course I made my mom take me to Comiskey Park to see my hero Bobby Murcer. Bobby still had a car and residence in the Chicago area. I managed to find his car in the parking lot across the street from the park and waited by it to get an autograph and picture with him. Lou Piniella, Thurman Munson, and Bobby came to the car together as they were staying with the Murcer's in Chicago. Sadly, I was one of the last fans to see Thurman Munson alive as he was killed in a plane crash the next day. That was a sad and chilling memory. How ironic that now Lou Pineilla is the manager of the Cubs.
Bobby was always gracious to this former Bobby Murcer fan crazed teenage girl that is now in her forties. Today I feel a part of my youth is now gone with your passing, Bobby.
May God bless you in heaven and bring comfort to your family. I hope that you, Thurman, and Mickey are having a good time catching up on old times.
Yes, you did acquire some Cubs fans that became your fans and adored you. I will miss you, Bobby!

OUR DEEPEST SYMPATHY GOES OUT TO BOBBY MURCERS FAMILY.
How ironic, I had just bought the book on Bobby's life for my hubby for Father's day (he's not completed it yet). this was very sad news indeed as my hubby and family are huge Yankee Fans, and know what he has meant to the team--and boradcasting. My son and daughter were at Yankee Stadium for the tribute today.... Bobby will be greatly missed.

As a young boy, Bobby Murcer was the first sports hero I ever had. I imitated his batting stance and the way he came in under a fly ball in Centerfield. I cried the day he got traded and smiled again the day he came back to the Yankees. At the last Old-Timers Day game I attended several years ago, Bobby was walking in from the outfield. I stood up in the crowd with my camera and yelled "Bobby, give us a smile." He turned toward me, posed until after I took the picture, and went on.
I cried today when I heard of his passing, and smiled again when I remembered the man. Thank you Bobby.
My warmest wishes go out to your family.

In those lean years of the early 70's when it was tough to be a young Yankee fan, Bobby was one of my heroes. Words could not describe how I felt when I was handed my grade-school team uniform and it had a "1" on the back. It was hard to see him get traded away and miss out on the Yanks return to greatness. It was an honor to be at the Stadium when they honored him on his retirement. We have truly lost not only a great Yankee, but a true gentleman whose career and voice will live on in baseball memory. My condolences to the Murcer family.

I was in the kitchen cooking up a quick marinara sauce for my husband and son who were on their way home from the beach. I had one ear glued to the TV. The Yanks had just gotten a very much needed win and I realized it wasn't the usual post game but John Sterling talking about Bobby Murcer. Instantly I knew he was gone. To my surprise, tears rolled down my face. I can count one hand the tears I've shed for people for whom I never met. Bobby took a piece of my heart with him today. Thanks for all the memories Bobby. I'll always remember you as the very handsome soft spoken Yankee you always were. God Bless you and may you rest peacefully.

I attended the Cleveland Indian doubleheader at the stadium in which Bobby hit four home runs in a row. The games saw Ray Fosse hit in the foot with a cherry bomb throw from the upper deck (remember that!), and Steve Hamilton’s folly floater. But as a young boy we came to see Murcer, whether it was bat day (where you'd trade 4 other players bats to get one of his), or this incredible double header that saw Bobby hit four in a row. I'll take that with me forever. Thank you! Godspeed.
