Uncle Dave, my great uncle, had a huge effect on my life. He was one of those rare adults who took the time to actually connect and converse with young children. The interest he devoted to our conversations when I was very young impressed upon me how important it is to think deeply and carefully about my words. In no small part, I credit my success as (of all things!) a college professor of English to those long ago talks with Uncle Dave. I miss him already.
