Reading all these testimonials reminded me of so many forgotten details of visiting his office. Perhaps the most memorable man I ever had the pleasure of knowing. All the animals, Dogs, cats horses, kittens, and the birds! I'd often be ushered into one of the examination rooms and sit thinking I was alone only to hear an odd noise and realize there was a rather large exotic bird sitting in the cage nearby! Amongst all the life proceeding in and out of the office and farm there would be the strong absolutely affirmative voice of the Dr. himself dispatching various issues and individuals long before he appeared to address me: "Ah Mr. Codrington!" followed by several droll witticisms which always left me feeling validated and able to survive whatever malaise had brought us there!
His voice was a prime instrument of his art and I cannot think of his office or the man himself without it...He enlivened any session while deftly healing our spirits...Afterwards, I'd wait outside while Mother spent a few moments with him engaged in private counsel which always seemed to ease any concern of hers.
He was an absolutely marvellous man and memorable healer; I am privileged to receive his attention. Just thinking of all this makes me smile as if I had just been in for a visit! Thank you Sir, and thank you long time nurse "Miss Taub"

Dr. Carpenter was my doctor in the 1950´s. I was thinking of him this morning and Googled him on the chance of finding him, and I did! For me, he took away the anticipated fright of SHOTS. They were done before I knew a shot was eminent. Even more long lasting for me was that he acknowledged that even as a child, explaining that the anticipation was worse than the shot itself has saved me anxiety over my 77 years in so many situations both medical and otherwise. I have lived in foreign countries and several states. I have been fortunate to have had, and have, gifted and wise doctors, but none have been as fundamentally influential to my sense of power over anxiety as Dr. Carpenter. Lord, bless and keep him.

Dr Carpenter was one of a kind. When we arrived we could see him out back.
He could make doctor's visits fun. Where else could you go to any doctor and have to step over his German shepherd to get into the office. He used to tell us to go outside and play with the Beagles, sheep and horses. I remember me being scared stiff of needles and him chasing me around the house. I was amazed at the time, he gave me that shot as he chased me, and I never even knew it!!! His visits were always interesting to say the least. He had stories to tell and and animals everywhere. There will never be another like him. Heaven has one more man to look up to. RIP to a wonderful man. Thank you

Where does one begin when giving homage to this man? He was one of the biggest parts of my life! He gave everything to his patients and the best care possible. The memories...I could go on and on. No appointment necessary...he would see you not matter what. As a kid? It was the best place possible. Done with your checkup...Mom, can I go out and see the horses? Maybe it led to my lifelong love of horses. I remember him coming to my home as a little girl because my Mom was so sick she couldn't get out of bed. Yet he came, he didn't have to. He treated the whole family. He was one of a kind. I miss that now. AND...we all should...because THIS...is what medicine is about!!!

Just found out about this as I was thinking about Dr. Carpenter. He was my doctor when I was a child in fact he came to my house when I had a bad case of bronchitis. I am 74 years old now and I always look forward to seeing Dr. Carpenter because of his farm and his barn. We always went inside to look at the horses and the dogs. When I had my daughter I brought her in to see him because she was allergic to milk and he was very good at diagnosing allergies. I know when I was in second grade he put me in New York hospital and to this day I still don´t know what I had I don´t know how I could find the records. He was a good man.

I was a patient of Dr. Carpenter in the 50´s through the 70´s along with my brothers and sister.
When I was trying to decide on where to go to college, he sat me down in his office and told me this story. He said my grandmother believed in psychics. She took me to one to find out where I should go to college. The psychic looked into her crystal ball and asked where should Walter go to college. The answer was she gave him was that Walter will be successful wherever he decides to go to college.
I walked out of his office feeling so much better. When my students come to me trying to make their college decision, I tell them that story.

I've been off Island for many yrs., just noticed Carpenter Farm, glad to see it was saved. I too had/have allergies. Despite having Walter as my Dr., still scary (I was about 7), seeing the tray of what seemed like dozens of syringes, about to be injected into me, to find out what I was allergic to. He was like a uncle to me. I had no idea he earned the Congressional Medal of Honor in WW2. Without me asking, he offered to write up a medical report to keep me out of Vietnam. I didn't need it, being a sole surviving son. I know I wasn't the only one he did that for. How lucky we were to have had him in our lives. RIP

What a great experience to have him as my pediatrician when I was little. Baron was always lying around somewhere, and it was a great day if I got the bird room. We would arrive early and Doc would be out in the pool, then notice we were there and come in to give me my allergy shots with a towel wrapped around his bathing suit, barefoot and dripping on the floor. We couldn't leave until he discussed with my mom the current book she was reading. Whenever I would tell my boys about my old doctor, they never believed that a doctor could be so cool.
Beautiful memories.

Dr. Carpenter was my doctor since I was 8 years old. My sister Yvonne was 7 years old. We are now 46 and 47 years of age. So we knew "docky" and his family for a very long time. We had the run of the house--top to bottom. The times that we were out of school for either holidays, summer vacation, or sick, we usually were there with our mom watching her work. My mom pearl worked for him since she was in her twenties until she was in her sixties. She is now 65. Her other 3 children--kwame, yvonne, and rashida--were like family to his residence also. My mom could write a book remembering him. I think that she should. My fond memories were swimming on the pool, having lunch which consisted of peanut/jelly sandwiches with pepperidge farm bread, and hagen ice cream, eating mulberries from the yard, playing with the family dogs, horses, kittens, and playing hide and go seek in the barn. The doctors visits were interesting--he always gave us shots with out telling us that he was about to--sneak attack (smile). I have memories to countless to remember. I am gwen the oldest of the kids. He was like a second dad to us. Dr. Carpenter will surely be missed. Love you, Dr. Carpenter.

I was very sorry to learn of Dr. Carpenters passing. He was a wonderful man and a great doctor. He was my doctor for a very long time 1948 to 1974. I loved our after examination consultations in his office where we would talk over many topics. He always made me feel important and took a great interest. When I was 4, I got one of his barn kittens, "MinK", who was my first cat. He also had many funny stories. He told that one night he had stayed up all night nursing the family dog who seemed to be making a recovery. As he was walking into his office he noticed his wife walking out to the car with the dog so he asked where are you going? She replied to the Vet! They do not make like him anymore. My deepest sympathy to his family

I recently found two diary entries from 1961 that Doc had made 2 house visits ( 10 miles from his office) to see me. Kind and generous he ( I remember his longtime nurse but not the name) was. Remember the sign in the office for parents not to smoke! I swung on the rope outside the office and petted the sheep that came into his office. What a kind man.

What a blessing to have had Dr. Carpenter in our lives...He had been my brother's and my pediatrician and then took such good care of my own children in the 60's and 70's. Dr. Carpenter was not only my and my 4 siblings pediatrician he also took care of my son. We are all so sad to hear of his passing but have such fond memories. Any day, anytime he was there for us. Oddly enough i married a physician and always tell stories of my doctor who came off the tennis court or out of the pool to take care of us. Always a shepard by his side.

We will all miss you Dr. Carpenter. Your family is in our thoughts and prayers

Dr. Carpenter not only took care of our four children, but also my husband and myself. More than once on a holiday we visited his office and were treated to his excellent care as well as his "words of'wisdom". He was a wonderful doctor and we also considered him a friend.

I was so sorry to hear of the passing of Dr. Carpenter. I am 56 years old and he was my Pediatrician as well as that of my cousin, Gregory Townsend and my Sister, Melissa Townsend-Bried. It was a long dirve from Center Moriches to his office in those days and we always looked forward to the 'day' trip.....except when it was time for shots! :o) My thoughts and prayers are with his family.

I was very sad to learn of Docy's death last week and also very sorry not to be able to fly East from San Francisco to his memorial service. My heartfelt condolences to my aunt and my cousins, all his family members and his close friends. He was a wonderful man and a truly important person in my life -- my fun uncle, my gentle pediatrician and then the consulting doctor for my own family. It was to Docy that I took my concerns about my children, and I never made important decisions about their care without his guidance. We visited him often in the summers as they grew up, swimming in his pool, enjoying his animals and listening to his stories. We shall all really miss him!!!

My
deepest sympathies to Doc Carpenter's family. He was my family's Doctor
from the time we moved to LI in the early 50's until his 'retirement'
in the late 80's. I fondly remember him driving up to his office in Bay
Shore in his Chrysler convertable with one of his German Shepard's with
him. He was a wonderful comfort when we were sick and to this day there
is no medical person that I ever trusted more.

The world lost a very important citizen. I have the fondest memories of trying to be sick on the weekend so we could go see Dr. Carpenter at his house. Baron, tennis clothes and the best shot giver I ever knew. Thanks to him I attended St Vincent's School of Nursing. I've been an RN for 32 years. So many great memories. Mrs. W and her girls will miss him.

I read in the paper with much sadness of Dr. Carpenter's passing. He was my doctor from my birth in the 50s through the early 70s. He was a doctor when they made house calls and my parents always spoke of how he came to the house and "saved my life" when I was having convulsions. I loved going to his office with the big waiting room and the wonderful grounds and the animals. He was a wonderful doctor and a wonderful human being and I will always remember him fondly. My condolences to all of his family.

I have never encountered such a wonderful and knowledgeable man. I worked for Docy for about 12 years and in all of that time I learned so very much from him. He was like a sponge, anything he read, he absorbed and remembered. It was the most educational and best time of my life. I will never forget him. May he rest in peace.
