Gordon Ware Obituary

Gordon E. "Gordy" Ware 1927 - 2008 POWNAL, VT. Gordon E. "Gordy" Ware, 80, of County Road died Tuesday, Oct. 7, 2008 at his residence, following a long illness. Born in Great Barrington, Mass., on Dec. 8, 1927, son of Kenneth and Edith Herrick Ware, he received his education in Williamstown and was a graduate of the former Williamstown High School. A Navy veteran of World War II, he served with in the South Pacific theatre during that time. In earlier years, Gordy was employed at the former Warren Wire in Pownal. A pioneer in the lawn care business, he founded Gordy's Lawn Care Service in 1960 which he continued to operate for the next twenty years. Gordy was employed at the Union Carbide in Bennington for 13 years until his retirement in 1990. Following retirement, he worked at the Taconic Golf Club in Williamstown until the time of his illness. An active member of the Pownal community for many years, Gordy was a former member of both the Pownal Rescue Squad and the Pownal Center Fire Department. He had also served as the ambulance driver at Green Mountain Race Track in Pownal. Gordy was a member of American Legion Post 13 in Bennington and one of the founding members of the American Legion Post 90 in Pownal; a member of Richard A. Reuther American Legion Post 152 in Williamstown, a member of VFW Post 1017 in Dunkirk, N.Y., and the Mount Greylock Club in North Adams. He enjoyed collecting and working on antique engines. HIs wife, the former Caroline J. "Connie" Cutler, whom he married Sept. 17, 1949, in Williamstown died July 15, 2008. He leaves two daughters, Gail Deery of Warwick, R.I., and Leslie Messina and her husband, George, of Pownal; two sons, Burt C. Ware and his wife, Linda, of St. Petersburg, Fla., and Kenneth Ware of Bennington; 13 grandchildren and three great-grandsons. He was predeceased by a son, Francis Gordon Ware, and by two brothers, Donald and David Ware. FUNERAL NOTICE: The funeral will be held from the Sherman Burbank Memorial Chapel, Main Street, Williamstown, on Saturday, Oct. 11, 2008, at 10:30 a.m. with the Rev. Carrie Bail, pastor of the Williamstown Congregational Church, officiating. At Mr. Ware's request, there will be no calling hours. Burial will take place in the family lot at Eastlawn Cemetery, Williamstown. Should friends desire, contributions in Mr. Ware's memory may be made to the Pownal Rescue Squad through the office of the MAHAR & SON FUNERAL HOME, 628 Main Street, Bennington, VT 05201.
