James Liedtke Obituary

Glens Falls James Ernest Liedtke, 79, has died. Actor, dancer, choreographer and teacher, Jim was born in Plymouth, Mich., to Carrie Brooks Liedtke and Ernest Liedtke. His elder sister, Dorothy Laurer died in 2006. He grew up in Fremont, Ohio. As a child of the Great Depression, he discovered a fascination with the big movie musicals of the day; And when a major Hollywood film company came to his hometown of Fremont, Ohio, to film "Back Home in Indiana," he made up his mind that he, too, would follow his dream to become an actor and dancer. But, it wasn't until he performed on stage in high school that he knew that live theater was to be his life's calling. It was at Bowling Green Ohio State University, where he earned a B.S. and M.A. in speech and theater arts, that he met Carol Johnson, a fellow student and aspiring actress from Wisconsin. They married in 1952 after graduation. After their wedding, the couple performed for a season at The Ogunquit Summer Theater. Jim and Carol then moved to New York City to pursue their professional stage careers performing on stage, on television and in commercials. In the mid-1960s, Jim and Carol purchased a farmhouse in Hartford, N.Y.; Jim teaching speech and establishing a theater program for the South Glens Falls School District, and Carol opening a gift shop on their property. Both Jim and Carol lent their many talents to the Glens Falls Operetta Club, where they performed in and directed many productions over the next 30 years. Some of the shows he directed for GFCT were "My Fair Lady," "Dark of the Moon," "California Suite" and "Funny Girl." Carol died in 1985 from breast cancer. Jim retired from teaching that same year, but continued to work with the Glens Falls Community Theatre, and with Original Works Theater until his final 1993 performance in "Fire Escape" where he played the leading role of a retired Broadway chorus dancer from the 1930s. Jim was much loved by many friends, students and family; Admired for his quick wit, delightful disposition and his innate generosity and kindness to all whom crossed his path in life. Jim is survived by his nephew, James and his wife, Judy Laurer, of Fremont, Ohio, and their two children, Andrea Burkett (Rob) and Josh Laurer (Crystal); His niece Marcia Laurer Clink and her two children Robert Trimner and Melissa Valle (Louie); As well as intimate friends, Agata Stanford and Stanley Werner, and so many people who have come to know and love him. Graveside services will be conducted at 11 a.m. on Tuesday, July 29, 2008, at Morningside Cemetery, Hartford, N.Y. A gathering of friends will take place on Tuesday, July 29, 2008, from 2 to 4 p.m. at the M.B. Kilmer Funeral Home, 136 Main St., South Glens Falls, N.Y.

Mr. Liedtke was a truly amazing
human being. I've never met another person who has as much passion for life as he always demonstrated and try to instill in other people.
Ever since I met him he has been
a part of my heart and I always try
every day "to open a new window,
open a new door"
Thank you for being a part of my life
Unkie Mame, you will remain in the heart of many!

Jim brought me flowers on my first day at Queensbury High. He came to the door of the cafeteria as I was doing lunch duty. When I told his nephew what that gesture meant to me at the time, he plucked a sprig from a funeral bouquet and gave it to me from Jim. I feel better knowing that Liedtke lives on in all of us who remember his kind heart.

Mr. Liedke was a wonderful, very patient, entertaining and effective teacher. I passed his speech class only because he tolerated my nervous laughter long enough for me to finish my final speech. Over the years I have thought of him often with admiration and appreciation. Deepest sympathy to his family.

Jim changed my life when he cast me in the star role of Alice in Wonderland. Indeed, many of us from all walks of life in South High School were given wonderful opportunities and experiences due to him being so wise and kind. I called him a couple weeks ago and he asked me, "Who am I talking to?" I replied with my name. That didn't ring a bell. The next time he asked I replied, "Alice, Alice in Wonderland." He then exclaimed, "Oh Alice, you're one of the most important people in my life." What an honor! I am writing an autobiography and recently wrote a couple pages about my experiences with Jim. In it I ended my last paragraph with, "To Sir With Love!" He was a shining star in theater, in South High School and in my life! I'll miss him!

I will never forget marching around our classroom in 8th Grade singing "Open a New Window, Open a New Door" at the top of our lungs or being reminded of the importance of a firm handshake. The lessons Mr. Liedtke imparted have been invaluable. He will be missed.

Mr. Liedtke was my speech teacher at the South Glens Falls Junior High School many years ago. I hope he knew that he made a wonderful and lasting impression on his students. We may have been too young and self-centered to express it at the time. It was a fun class!

Like many others, I also had Mr. Liedtke for speech class. He was a gentleman. Impeccable manners, sweet disposition and never said an unkind thing in all the time I knew him. I am saddened by his death.

I went to Fremont Ross High School with Jim. I live in Minerva NY now. For years I saw his name in the Post Star and wondered if it was the same Jim Liedtke and I guess it was. I wanted to call him to find out but I never did.I was Wanda Smith.

To All,
I am so sorry to read of Mr. Liedtke's passing. I had him for speech class in Jr. High. I will never forget his quick wit. I still have a hard time calling "magic markers" that, he always called them "margic mackers". I think of him every time with a smile.

I will never forget Mr. Liedtke singing "Open a New Window" in our speech class. He was an inspiration for me to become a teacher. He helped me overcome my shyness. He was an incredible man and I am saddened by his passing. My condolences to his family.
