David Macfarlane Obituary

HAMPTON — David G. Macfarlane, 69, of Hampton died suddenly Thursday, Feb. 12, 2009, at Portsmouth Regional Hospital with his family by his side.

He was born July 20, 1939, in Buffalo, N.Y., a son of the late William A. and Margaret (Baker) Macfarlane.

Mr. Macfarlane was raised in Buffalo, where he graduated from Kensington High School. He attended Erie County Technical Institute of Buffalo before enlisting in the U.S. Navy. While stationed in Brunswick, Maine, he met his future wife, Cynthia, with whom he would spend the next 47 years.

In addition to his wife, Cindy, of Hampton, survivors include his children, Lynn Macfarlane and her husband Stuart Werman of Hampton, and Steve Macfarlane and his wife Jessica of Maynard, Mass.; his brother, Dr. Ronald Macfarlane and his wife Dr. Catherine McNeal of Temple, Texas; his sister, Janet Peterson-Sterling and her husband David Sterling of Port Crane, N.Y.; his grandchildren, Maxwell and Isabel Werman of Hampton and Jillian Macfarlane of Maynard; nieces and nephews.

WE REMEMBER: David and Cindy moved after the Navy to Buffalo, where he worked for IBM. He and Cindy were transferred to New Hampshire in the late 1960s and settled in Hampton.

David founded MacDurgin Business Systems in Laconia, which he owned and operated for many years. He was a member of the Hampton Rotary and past president of the Laconia Rotary. He also served as president of the Hampton Jaycees and was a Boy Scout troop leader. He loved his church community and was an active member of the United Church of Christ in North Hampton, singing in the choir and holding various positions within the church. He also loved music and practiced and performed with the Portsmouth Music and Arts Center, making appearances throughout the Seacoast. He held his private pilot's license and enjoyed his times at the North Hampton Airfield.

Dave was a devoted husband, father, grandfather and friend. He was a living example of character, integrity and honor, able to find the humor in any situation. Dave had an insatiable appetite for learning and adventure. He truly lived a wonderful life.

SERVICES: The family will receive relatives and friends Tuesday, Feb. 17, from 4 to 7 p.m. in the Remick & Gendron Funeral Home-Crematory, 811 Lafayette Road, Hampton. Services will be held Wednesday, Feb. 18, at 11 a.m. in the United Church of Christ, 295 Atlantic Ave., North Hampton. A reception will follow in the church fellowship hall.

Cindy:
Thank you for many memories and always making us feel like family. My many years at Mac-Durgin Business Systems helped me to grow both personally and professionally. Dave helped me to realize how important personal integrity is and I realize and appreciate that gift now more than ever. I will never forget my days at MBS or what I learned from you and Dave. Thank you for giving Cindy and I many special memories that we can cherish throughout our lifetime. We're sorry to hear about losing Dave. Best Wishes to you and your family.

Cindy and family: Words cannot express our shock and sorrow as we read of Dave's passing. Though many years have passed since our Jaycee days, we always thought of you folks whenever we passed through Hampton, and smiles came to our faces. Sounds like this was a sudden and unexpected happening, and that is not easy to deal with. We hope and pray that God has given you the strength to carry on knowing that so many respected your husband, and that his passing will make a large void in many lives. May God use your family and friends as leaning posts as He guides you into the future. Our love to you.
