I was looking up Chris on Facebook and was so saddened to learn that she passed in 2007. She became friends with my mom in 1996 when she stayed with her during a teaching seminar in Conneticut and then visited us in Guayaquil Ecuador in 1998. I was just a kid but she made such an impression on me. She was always full of energy and always had a smile on her face. I'm so happy to read that she tpuched so many lives.

With each school year that comes along, I always think of the one teacher in my life that I could truly call "friend". She was an amazing woman with the ability to touch every student and make them feel like they were the only one who existed. Senora Marselli not only was an amazing teacher but pulled me up off of the ground when I was at my lowest. She would be so proud of Middletown High today. I am 44 Years old now and think of her every day. I wished so much, like many others for just one more day to tell her the words laying inside of my heart. I'll look up at the sun and sky to you sweet Mary xo

I have experienced death many times in my life, but none have hit me as hard as Senora LaRosa's. I had Senora for Spanish two and a half years during my high school years and then I have worked with her for the past two years at the high school. Over the past year we bonded and talked a great deal about my aspirations and my plans for the future and she encouraged me and stood by me, and talked me through difficult choices and helped me to see the positive in every situation. She wanted me to keep her informed of my plans and keep her updated on my life.
Currently I am in Wisconsin taking two graduate school classes. The campus is right on Lake Michigan and I sit outside every afternoon and write to Senora LaRosa about campus, about my decisions, and about my classes. The lake reminds me of her. It is so huge and beautiful and filled with meaning and the waves crashing on the beach are so comforting. It seems to go on and on until it fades off into the horizon. This is how I think of Chris. She has the biggest spirit of anyone I know and she is one of the most beatiful people I have ever met both inside and out. Although she is gone I have asked for her help in making numerous decisions and yesterday as I sat outside by the lake writing to her the sun beat down so hard over my shoulders that I knew she was with me right then and there.
I had such a wonderful year with her this year. I chaparoned the Senior Prom where she spent all night worying about me because I got so burnt at the crew meet earlier that day and I also roomed with her on the Senior Trip.
On the senior trip I was the youngest person in the room and I didn't really care where I slept so I figured I would take the bunks because the "adults" would want the big beds. Well boy was I wrong. Senora came in and started yelling and jumping around excited about how she had never slept in a bunk bed before and that she was taking the bunk beds and when I say taking them I mean taking them. She slept in the bottom one the first night and the top one the second night. Not only that but Senora, Kelvin, Anne, and I had a shuffle board tourny while we were there and thanks to the skill of Senora LaRosa, Anne and I lost the tourney. Be prepared for a rematch when we all meet again. I am sure we can find a shuffle board in heaven and if not we'll make one.
I wish Dan, Mary, and the reat of the family the best. I will keep you in my hearts and prayers just as I keep Senora in them. Dan I still haven't been able to finish te memory book, but I promise I will and you will get it before I move to Sacramento in August.

July 13th... 4 weeks today
I finally have read all these beautiful notes of remembrance about my sister Christine. I would like personally thank each one of you for keeping my sister alive in your memories. I have so many beautiful ones of her myself. I guess being the "baby" and her only sister you can only imagine. My favorite is her name for me.. "brat"... thats what she always called me, just a week before her death even. There hasn't been one day that has passed I don't think of her, talk to her and pray to her. I know she is with my mother and probably speaking in Spanish up above.
I always knew of her passion for helping others, her dedication for teaching and her love for "family", but I will never get tired of reading all the beautiful comments and hearing stories down the road.
It doesn't take the pain away, but it somehow soothes my heart.
God bless you all ~
Te quiero mi hermana....... Maria

Dear Dan,
I was schocked to read about the passing of Chris. I was not one of her students; however, I was a new teacher at MHS and was fortunate to have met her (mostly in the early hours in the copy room). Chris always met me with a bright smile, boundless energy and constant encouragement. For some reason, she and I would talk about our remarkable husbands. She was so proud of you. We would also talk about how much our students needed from their teachers (we shared many of the same students) - mostly respect and mentoring from us combined with honest caring. Although I have been gone from teaching for many years now, Chris is one of the very few teachers I will always remember. I have no doubt that her spirit is still here with us. I wish you strength throughout these difficult months but know that Chris will always be with you.

Painting Heaven
Dedicated to Christine Marselli-LaRosa
October 26, 1954 – June 15, 2007
She brightened so many lives
Enlightening the world
With a wondrous smile
Dazzling brighter than diamonds and pearls
She was more precious than any gem you see
As she worked tirelessly
To make the world a better place to be.
Her life as vibrant as the colors she wore
Loving everyone without settles to score
A golden heart open to all
Always answering the call
For so many lives she has deeply touched
Worldwide, no scale could measure how much.
Upon sending her home to the sky above
A miracle we did see
She was painting heaven with rainbows in hand
We knew then forever with us she'll be
Within our hearts, she'll always have a place
With her loving smile upon her face.

To the Marselli and LaRosa families:
My sincere condolences to all of you. I grew up just down the street on Boardman Lane and the one thing I remember about Christine was that she seemed to be smiling all of the time. I'll always remember her as being a kind, compassionate person who went out of her way to reach out to people. At this stage of my life, I have decided to go become a teacher and much of the inspiration comes from Christine. Please remember that it is not the number of years we have in this life that matters - rather it is the love of God that we show by being of service to others. Christine has led an exemplary life that all of us should emulate. It was a blessing to know her.

I was very saddened to hear of the passing of Miss Marselli. (She lives forever in my mind as Miss Marselli.) I was a student from 85-88. I can still hear her voice day one of Spanish one, she was the most vibrant teacher/person I had ever met. I was lucky enough to be one of the students to travel to Spain with Miss Marselli and today I pulled out my photo album from that trip and found a poem I wrote in probably 1987. I've never been a writer, but it suited her then and always I believe.
There is a teacher from Middletown,
her mood is very rarely ever down.
She is always on the go, never still,
being in her class is always quite a thrill.
In her height she is rather very small,
I can't recall ever seeing her stall.
She doesn't speak English very much.
She isn't afraid of the human touch.
For car washes, tag sales, bake sales and all,
we need only to give her a call.
Right there by your side with all of her pep,
she pushes you along in time with her step.
She remembers you always though you're not in her class.
If you play your cards right, she'll give you a pass.
But most of all she makes learning a blast.
She will be greatly missed by those from the past, present and future.
My condolences to all.

Mary,Mr. Marselli, Dan, Jamie, Stephanie, and Carl,
Our thoughts and prayers are with you. Sometimes we don't know what God's plans are but I do know He must have needed his angel back. Chris will stay alive in our thoughts, our memories, and our prayers. She was so proud of all of you. She has touched so many lives of people, students, children, and especially those who were not as fortunate as the rest. Her work here is obvious with all the people, young and older, who came to honor her! Those students who never were lucky enough to have her as a teacher but were able to share in her light and teaching by the example she set for all who walked through those doors at Middletown High, at St. Pius, in the community, and in other countries where her work carried on. We are blessed to have her in our hearts and in our memories! With all our love,

I was so saddened to hear about this loss that will be mourned by so many people. I only had Mrs Marselli for one semester but my memory of her as an enthusiastic, supportive and encouraging teacher is made up from all the years I was at MHS - you did not have to be in her classroom to be influenced by her -such was her spirit and nature. She will be missed by many - far and wide, and may her memory always be for a blessing.

To the LaRosa/Marselli family: I am so sorry for your loss, our loss. Senora LaRosa is one of a kind. She is the only teacher who is in my photo albums as much as my friends...she was one of our friends. What teacher starts and ends a class dancing? What teacher lets you sleep over in her classroom and party at her house? What teacher takes you hiking in Meriden and then traveling in Ecuador? Some of my greatest high school memories include Senora LaRosa; many of them would not have happened without her. I am sad that she had to go so soon, but find comfort knowing that she truly lived life as we all hope to do – to the fullest.
To Senora LaRosa: Gracias. Thank you for being you. Thank you for leaving this world better than how you found it.

LaRosa and Marselli Families;
I too am one of the many students she touched in her life. I had her for Spanish 4 first semester this past year, and I can't explain how lucky I feel to have had those few precious months with her. Graduation was tough with out her although I know she was there anyway. Project Grad was amazing, and even though it wasn't something we had to do, almost the entire senior class decided to still wear their pins from graduation all night. Also, yesterday at my college orientation in RI I wore the pin since I was unable to attend the funeral. I had several kids from CT ask me about it, and immediatley they knew who I was talking about. It was amazing that so many knew who she was, and knew of the good work that she'd done. She will be greatly missed by all.

I wanted to share with everyone what we believe to be a miracle which occured at the Marselli-LaRosa household yesterday evening following services.
It is very rare to see rainbows in our lifetimes. However, yesterday evening as the night was beginning to fall we witnessed a very nearby, very bright double rainbow. As Dan noted that it was Chris, a single lightening bolt flashed through the the rainbows, linking the arcs. There were a total of 5 rainbows within the course of an hour. We all said at the church that Chris was going to paint heaven when she got there. Well I bet that is exactly what she told God. "We need some color up here." In addition, there was a cloud formation that looked like a hand raised toward the heavens.
To Chris: Adios mi mama, nos venemos mas tarde. Te quiero mucho y se buena.

I didn't have Mrs. Larosa as a teacher, nor was I an officer for the senior class and she still knew me by my full name and could probably tell you a list of my activites and grade point average. She was more devoted than any adult at MHS and a school without her is difficult to imagine. She was the "teacher that touched my life" for thousands of students. I can only hope that there are more people in the world who are a fraction of the selfless person she was. Thank you for sharing her with us. Chins up, she wouldn't have wanted anyone to stand any other way.

Dear Dan, Uncle Les and Family
Your home is a piece of my life, alive and welcoming with the many events that you have hosted. I know that I have never said thank you properly. Thank you for the special times. For me they started in the 60’s when I would happily jump into the back of the family station wagon for the trip to Uncle Les's house. They were all wonderful times that I’ll always cherish. Whenever I hear Christine’s name I still see a young vibrant girl. Christine lived life with tremendous passion, didn’t keep any of her music inside, and gladly shared it with the world. Her life reminds me of this unknown quote “Seek not your resting place in the ground, but in the hearts of men”, since it is how she lived.
Deepest sympathy.

I offer my deepest sympathy to you all at such a difficult time. The loss of Chris has been felt by thousands of people from all walks of life. We all share in your sadness from losing such an incredible person. There are many new things that I've learned this week that Chris has accomplished and it gives me great pleasure to know that she truly made a difference in this world. I feel extremely blessed to have had the opportunity to get to know her when my daughters attended Middletown High School. You just had to love that woman, she was simply the best!! I will cherish the last time I saw her when she was participating in the Relay for Life held at the high school. She walked proudly around the track with a bright smile on her face. That was her, always upbeat! You are fortunate to have many, many memories of such a terrific human being. Keep your heads held high in her honor, she's deserved every pomp and circumstance she's gotten this week! She will be missed!!

Dear LaRosa and Marselli families:
20 years after graduation, let me tell you what I learned from Christine - the best teacher I had at MHS. I went through Spanish 5 with her and she inspired me to continue to challenge myself with Spanish, to live and study in Spain and study other Spanish cultures in Central America. She inspired her students to respect everyone and to learn about these different cultures. She taught us to try to understand what deep poverty is through her dedication to Tijuana. She taught us not to be afraid of poverty, to do what we can to make people's lives just a little bit better. She taught through example - the best way to teach.
I traveled to Mexico with Christine during our spring break trip. She taught us how to have fun and "go with the flow" even if, like her, all of your luggage was lost on the way down and not recovered until the last day. She showed us by example, that to have fun and learn didn't necessarily mean you had to have all of the outfits we all brought!
Christine was dedicated to teaching, dedicated to Middletown. She taught us about true public service and community involvement. She taught us that being a public employee is a calling and something to be proud of - a career for life. Her students and her family were most important to her. We knew that, and we tried our best to live up to her high expectations.
Please know that her students all over the globe are mourning your personal loss - it is a loss that we all share. She leaves such a legacy to us and to OUR children. We will continue to practice what she taught us - loving our neighbors where ever they are and reaching out to those in need.

I was so devastated to hear the news about Miss Marselli (that's how I always knew her). I graduated in '92 and to this day I still say she was the best teacher anyone could ever have. She substituted for my Geometry class and only spoke in Spanish & Italian-refused to speak in English. Fortunately I knew what she said in Spanish. Everything about her was an inspiration. To her husband and family-I cannot say enough how sorry I am. She was the best and always will be. It is such a loss and a shock to everyone. She will always hold a special place in my heart.

Dan, Stino, and family,
Our sympathy, love, and prayers are with you. We are still in complete shock regarding the loss of Christine. Even though we have talked about this so many times, we felt we needed to express this in writing to you as well. I know that being a teacher is often a thankless job- but she did it with pride. We had many conversations about teaching, but what our family remembers most about Christine is her personal side. She truly believed in family...and always brought our extended family together to celebrate good times, and offered a place to gather during tough times. Your home was always open to all...she made everyone feel comfortable and welcome. Even though we all miss her so much right now, we are so happy that we all have many wonderful memories and special occassions and holidays we shared together...especially most recently, Carl's Confirmation party and the Memorial Day gathering at your home. We are so happy we were there. She wanted us to visit often- even on Halloween! She loved everyone, never asked for anything, but was always first in line to help out...Besides being a godmother, aunt, sister-in-law, and cousin to us, she was so much more. She lived her entire life as an educator, counselor, and mentor... and each of us learned lessons on life from her life, and sadly her death:Live life to the fullest- don't put off for tomorrow what you can accomplish today, and show those you care for that you do love them every day. She told our kids to be true to themselves and do what makes them happy. She always told them excitedly how proud she was of them after seeing their report cards or projects. Education is so importante! She smiled for all to see the amount of love she had for anyone- friend or stranger! The words we have heard repeatedly from people this week are, "If it wasn't for Christine..." and they finished with a way she helped them accomplish something. We have even said that ourselves this week! Dan, that is an honor! She may not have earned millions of dollars doing what she loved to do, but she earned the love, respect, and friendship of MANY! That is worth more than anything! She got pure enjoyment out of helping others...that was her reward. I hope many will carry on her life's mission of volunteerism and helping others- and think about how Christine would want us to treat each other. The world would be a better place, and her dreams would be fulfilled. You and Christine were a perfect couple- meant for each other. Dan, you made her so happy and proud. You kept her laughing, singing, and dancing! That is what love is about. We all wish and hope for such a love. Stino, she loved being your daughter- and raved about your garden and handiwork all the time. Your companionship gave her joy! We love Christine, and always will. She will be missed, but not forgotten.

Dan and Family:
Please accept my sincre condolences about the death of your wife and the best teacher ever, Mrs. Christine LaRosa (Marselli).
She has been the face of Middletown High School for thirty years. She has touched so many lives. She was truly dedicated to the education of Middletown students and beyond.
All of the Alumni of Middletown High School know how much pride she had in doing what she did, from heading up Project Graduation, Senior Picnics and Suppers, and much more.
It's hard to believe that ten years ago this month, I graduated from Middletown High School. Mrs. LaRosa made Senior year and all my Spanish classes, a delight.
Rest in peace my dear friend, an outstanding teacher, a strong leader, and an tremendous example of how great people can be.

Dear Marselli and LaRosa families,
Words cannot express the level of shock and sadness felt upon hearing about Chris's passing. We had a wonderful time with her at Relay on the 8th and 9th, and every time we saw her in the community she always had a smile and loving comments for us when we spoke. She will be greatly missed. Graduation this year won't be the same without her. Our hearts and thoughts are with you.

I AM DEEPLY SADDENED BY THE LOSS OF SUCH A GREAT WOMAN. SHE WILL BE MISSED VERY MUCH. SHE TOUCHED MY LIFE DURING A VERY DIFFICULT TIME IN MY SENIOR YEAR IN 1995 WHEN MY FATHER WAS DIAGNOSED WITH TERMINAL CANCER. HER KINDNESS WILL NEVER BE FORGOTTEN BY MYSELF OR MY FAMILY SHE WAS TRULY AN ANGEL OF GOD AND SHE MADE THIS WORLD A BETTER PLACE. IT IS UNFORTUNATE THAT FUTURE STUDENTS OF MIDDLETOWN HIGH WILL ONLY BE BLESSED TO KNOW THE MEMORIES OF THIS LEGENDARY TEACHER AND NEVER HAVE AN OPPORTUNITY TO BE GRACED BY HER PRESENCE AND EMBRACED BY HER ENERGETIC SPIRIT AND SMILE.
OUR CONDOLENCES TO EVERYONE SHE TOUCHED AND KNEW..ESPECIALLY HER FAMILY AT THIS DIFFICULT TIME..

Dan and the LaRosa-Marselli Families,
I was a former student of Senorita Marselli's from 1985-1988. She was an amazing, amazing woman and has been so influential in my life. She is the reason I became a teacher and developed a volunteerism streak. If I live my life even half as well as she did, I'll be happy. She influenced SO many young minds at that high school for the better. What an amazing gift she was to all of us. Please accept my deepest heartfelt sympathies. Maybe you can take some comfort in knowing that there are thousands of former students just like me who have pieces of Christine in our hearts. She will be greatly missed.

To the Marselli,LaRosa family and all of Christine's extended family and friends,
On the morning I found out about Mrs..Larosa I called my daughter (Class of 2010) at home to advise her what had happened and to prepare her for the grief that she would feel when she arrived at school that day. Being new to Middletown High we did not know Christine at all..and I assumed Julia did not either. She had a different Spanish teacher. I was not expecting the extreme sadness in Julia's voice when I told her. "She was a beautiful person Mom ..so nice."...It was a true testament to Christine and how after such a short period of time and never having her for a teacher that Julia knew of her and knew what a beautiful person she was. I can only hope and pray that my daughter will grow up to give of herself unselfishly and freely as your beloved Christine. Her family and friends and all the people of Middletown have truly lost a most beautiful person

Uncle Les and Family:
We are saddened for the loss of our cousin Christine and hope the outpouring of love from family and the community will help ease the pain of this sudden loss. Christine was always the cousin to drag you out on the dance floor at a family wedding and make you feel like no time had passed since you last saw her! I will always remember her bright smile as well as her lively wardrobe! One can not help but smile when thinking of such a beautiful bright spirit!
Our thoughts and prayers are with you.
Much Love

I am so deeply sorry for the loss of such a beautiful person. It is so hard to understand how someone so dedicated to giving so much of themselves to others could leave us so early. As a four year Spanish student of Senorita Marselli (at the time 86-89) she was truly and inspiration to me. She amazed me with the time she dedicated to students abroad and the organizations of which she was a part. Her energy was unending. Besides a phenomenal teacher, she was a mentor, a friend, a true motivator to all her students and the one I remember most. She was a real life hero. She is no doubt an angel who will continue to help so many on a much larger scale. I hope remembering her bright smile and positive outlook will help comfort you through your times of sadness.

On behalf of my children, Marcey VanDerTuin, class of 1992, and Aaron Thiela, class of 2004,myself and my husband, I would like to tell you how much we all loved and
appreciated Christine. She went out of her way to help my children, and took Aaron under her wing. She made everyone she encountered feel so special! I saw her at Brewbakers last week. She gave me her usual cheery greeting. I only wish I'd gone over and given her a big hug, because she was such a special person, and I wanted her to know how I felt.
It's hard to understand why things
happen sometimes, but knowing how Christine affected so many lives, should attest to her kindness, decency and love of her students, their parents, and the general Middletown community.
With love, and gratitude.

Dear Les, Dan, John, Mark, Mary & family. The family is again sadden at the loss of a special loved one, Chris. Two weeks ago at our cousin Tom's funeral, Chris, her Uncle Leo and I had an opportunity to reconnect. She was extremely upbeat on life and excited for me on my future plans. I'm thankful that we had a brief time together. May all the expressions of sympathy encourage you to keep the faith. May you all be blessed with renewed peace and hope in the difficult period ahead.

Mr. Marselli, Dan and Family,
So very sorry to hear of the passing of Chris, truly one of God's beautiful children. I will always remember her endless energy and love for all. My children were certainly blessed to have had her in their lives during and after their school days at Middletown High. I had the pleasure of serving with her on the Council and witnessed her passion and love for the entire community. May the good lord continue to bless and keep you at such a time as this.

There are those people who pass through our lives that leave an indelible mark on our hearts. They somehow show us something that no one else can quite manage to capture.
They show their courage, their kindness and their exuberance for life. They ask for nothing in return, nor expect anything. They love freely without embarrassment, without bias, without question. They go beyond what most would consider generous, but never seek recognition. They provide comfort and confidence; they nurture friendship and happiness in everyone they meet.
Chris LaRosa was one of those few individuals. Her students, past and present, their parents, her colleagues, these were all her friends. She spoke with those she had only just met as if they were part of her inner circle of close friends. And they were. To Chris, everyone was someone to be cherished and loved. There were no limits to her friendship, especially if you were a student. No one can ever know how many lives were affected by her unselfishness. She provided safe haven for those in need, for those young lives struggling to find their way. And for so many more that never even knew her name, she gave of herself unconditionally, unselfishly.
Chris accomplished more in a day than most people can accomplished in their entire lives. She made sure that any girl wanting to attend the prom had a dress for the occasion. She raised the money, planned the event, and then stayed up all night with our sons and daughters to ensure their safe return after their graduation. She supported and assisted the student clubs. She provided countless shoulders to those who confided in her. She worked tirelessly to make the years at Middletown High School memorable and joyous for so many young adults as well as their parents. And if her years were not so brief, she would have continued to serve, to nurture, to bring joy to many, many more students.
We have been blessed to have this remarkable woman in our lives, and especially in our children’s lives. She provided a model for them of what a truly good person is, what they can and should aspire to be. Whether they go on to become doctors or mothers or teachers or any path that life takes them, her spirit will remain with them. The best way to memorialize her life and all that she believed is to try to embody those gifts she gave to our own lives. To reach out to someone who may need a helping hand, to treat everyone we meet with respect and kindness and to appreciate every single day for the wonderful gift that it is.
As much of a loss as this is to those who knew her, the greatest loss is for those who will never be touched by her gentle heart, her joyous spirit and her unselfish devotion, especially to the young lives that will pass through the halls of Middletown High School in the years to come. Celebrate her life and all that she stood for. We have received an immeasurable gift for having had her grace our lives. Thank you, Chris. You will stay in our hearts forever.

To Dan and the Marselli-LaRosa Family,I was so saddened to hear of the tremendous loss of Christine. What a wonderful person she was. She was an extrodinary teacher who cared deeply about her students, and was well loved and liked by so many. She went above and beyond her job of teaching. She expanded her horizons and great talents by helping out the less fortunate in Mexico, and giving those children a chance in life, because thats the kind of person Christine was, unselfish. She was also involved in many, many projects in Middletown,a town she was proud to be a part of. I am the mother of two daughters who went to MHS,class of 94&95 and they both speak highly of Mrs. LaRosa.May the love of friends and family carry you through your grief.
