Sherwood Lowery Obituary

Published by Richmond Times-Dispatch from Aug. 13 to Aug. 14, 2008.
LOWERY, Sherwood L. "S.L." or "Butch." Well, I just decided to "blast off" and go bass fishing on Heaven's Lake on August 12, 2008. To my loving wife, Pat, of 40 years, you won't have to worry; I don't have to wear a life jacket up here. We had a great time. To my son, Matthew, what else can I say? You are the best son a man could ask for. Keep up the good work, and remember our good times on the water, like when you would rock the boat every time I walked to the rear. To my brother, Robert and his wife, Brenda, of Haysi, Va., we were miles apart but enjoyed our visits and phone calls. I have the best in-laws in the world, Ed and Rae Coulter of Pinellas Park, Fla. Hey, Ed, I'm going to miss those cheese and crackers on the porch. To my larger family, I will miss you all: Mary and Joe Woolard, Bruce and Debbie Coulter, Jim and Sylvia Coulter, Carolyn Lowery and family of Farnham, Va.; and my godchildren, Margaret and Bain Marsh. I was a member of the Richmond Police Department for almost 30 years and Fraternal Order of Police. I will be at the Mechanicsville Chapel of Bennett Funeral Home, 8014 Lee-Davis Rd., Mechanicsville, Va., on Wednesday from 6 to 8 p.m. and on Thursday from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Services will be held at 11 a.m. on Friday, August 15. Interment will be at Signal Hill Memorial Park. In lieu of flowers, please consider a love gift to my family.

I called him "S.L." Others called him "Butch." but everyone who knew him called him friend. His smile, his infectious laugh and sense of humor were only surpassed by his respect for everone he came in contact with. I was saddened at the thought of the loss of such a good man. I will keep your family and friends in my thoughts and prayers old friend. Rest in peace.

Pat/Matthew,
I was overwhelmed with grief on Friday when I heard about S.L. Unfortunately, I didn't hear in time to make it to the funeral. I so wish I had been there. I love all three of you dearly and will miss S.L. very very much. Pat, you and SL were like a second pair of parents when I was growing up. Maria and I are thinking of you and Matthew during this time.

Pat,Matthew, family and friends may God bless you and comfort you always through the loss of SL. He was a fine Officer, traffic cop, and coworker. It was a privilege to know and serve with him. May he rest in peace and the pleasure of unimagined fishing in the Lord's seas and lakes. I'll remember his humorous side the most. He will never be gone for he will always be in our hearts.

Pat and Matthew,
For all the Pepsi S.L. drank, you'd think he'd be wound up, but he was the most laid back person I've ever known! He could slide easily into many roles --- professional police officer, devoted husband, proud and doting father, best friend, good neighbor, and of course, avid fisherman. Matthew, you were the apple of his eye and he was so proud of you, and rightly so. You are a delightful young man who will keep your dad's legacy going. Pat, I know it will be tough without him. Please know you have many people who love you and are there for you.

I worked with "Butch" at Metropolitan Hospital 20 years ago when I was a weekend supervisor. He was a great guy and we had many laughs together. He always spoke very lovingly about his family. My thoughts, prayers, and deepest are with you at this difficult time.

Pat, I did not know you, but S.L. and I went to school together. He was funny and a great friend then. I had a car accident once while working in richmond, guess who the officer was who showed up to take the report..none other then S.L. we talked awhile and he still had that wonderful smile. I know you will miss him. My God Bless you and yours.

Dear Pat,

It was a distint honor to have served with SL for so many years. I appreciated his dedication to his job and to every brother officer he served with. I can't remember ever hearing him have a negative word. He will always be remembered for his smile and wit. I see it was on his mind when planning his obit. For me the sadness I felt when I saw his picture today was washed away as only SL could have done by his last hurrah. I will never forget that his last effort on earth was to bring a smile to all he knew and especially you and Matt. My prayers are that you can keep on smiling as SL did during the most courageous fight of his life. Matt your dad was so proud the day you were born and he couldn't talk to me for long before he was bragging about his boy. You have such a wonderful legacy but then again a tough one to live up to. He has walked through the Valley of the Shadow of Death and shall now dwell in the house of the Lord forever. We pray for your confort.

Jerry and I were saddened to hear of Butch's passing. Having worked with Butch for many years at RPD, I found him to be a great police officer, a devoted husband, and a proud father. His time on earth was cut short, but we will all see him again when we too must pass from this earth to a better place. You will be missed my friend.

As I was perusing the homegoing notices, this one caught my attention. What a wonderful way to celebrate his legacy by putting this announcement in first person. If he was as considerate and loving as he appears to be by his final thoughts, then indeed this family and his friends were blessed to have been loaned him for a while.

My condolences to your family.

Pat and Matt, George and I were so sorry to learn of S.L.'s death but are comforted to know he has gone on an eternal bass fishing trip. His wit, humor and love for his family are still evident in his obituary. We have such great memories of him as neighbors of 17 years, especially the fishing and neighborly chats with Diet Pepsi in hand. Our thoughts and prayers are with you both.

Pat,
I am truly saddened by the passing of S.L. You are in my thoughts and prayers. S.L. was my buddy during my teenage years, I called on him countless time to repair what I broke and bring me gas when I ran out, he was always there for me and I loved him for it. I will miss him.

"S. L.",
In the "Good Book" in 2 Timothy 4:7 (New International Version) it says:
"I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith."

And in Matthew 25:21,
"His master replied, 'Well done, good and faithful servant! You have been faithful with a few things; I will put you in charge of many things. Come and share your master's happiness!'

You have indeed fought the fight with true grace and dignity, rest now in peace, my friend, and hold fast to the promise that we will meet again and share all the happiness that heaven has to offer.
