Charles Gilligan Obituary

Published by Richmond Times-Dispatch on Aug. 27, 2008.
GILLIGAN, Charles. When Charles "Chuck" M. Gilligan, 81, of Columbus, Ohio, died Saturday, August 23, 2008, the world lost some of its humor. This Irish gentleman was known for flirting, telling jokes and having a broad smile. He lived life to its fullest. He was born in Toronto, Ohio, and was the oldest of two children of George and Mary Gilligan. He graduated from Toronto High School in 1945 and served briefly in the Navy at the end of World War II. He moved to Columbus to take accounting classes. On April 1, 1952, he began working as bookkeeper for Reis Bros. trucking company, where he was employed until mid-February 2008. He now joins his beloved wife of 38 years, Virginia, who preceded him in death, to continue their love and companionship and to watch over the family they love. He is survived by his five sons (and spouses/ companion), Michael (Liz) of Plano, Texas, Patrick (David Bishop) of Columbus, Gregory of Richmond, Daniel (Lesli) of Pickerington, Ohio, and Mark (Barbara) of Pickerington, Ohio; eight grandchildren, Shaun (Mandi), Erin and Colin Gilligan and Katie (Chris) Scheurer, all of Texas, Matthew, Ashleigh, Michael and Owen Gilligan, all of Pickerington; three great-grandchildren, Benjamin, Emma and Virginia Scheurer, all of Texas; a sister, Rosemary Onia of Crown Point, Ind.; four sisters-in-law, two brothers-in-law and 17 nephews and nieces; and special friend, Betty Campton of Grove City, Ohio. The family will receive friends at the Maeder-Quint-Tiberi Funeral Home, 1068 S. High St., Columbus, on Thursday, August 28, from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. with a Rosary at 7:30 p.m. Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10 a.m. at St. Patrick Catholic Church on Friday, August 29, followed by interment at Holy Trinity Cemetery in Somerset, Ohio. The family requests that donations be made to the Mother Angeline McCrory Manor, 5199 E. Broad St., Columbus, Ohio 43213, or to the American Cancer Society for ovarian research, 870 Michigan Ave., Columbus, Ohio 43215.

To the Gilligan Family:

We share in your profound loss of Chuck. He was an "in-law" but more importantly our friend, with whom we shared birthdays, picnics, and Thanksgiving dinners.
We knew him through our daughter and son-in-law, Mark and Barbara Gilligan. Their loss is our loss as well. He will be missed.

To all of the Gilligans,

We are so sorry for the loss your family is facing right now.

Papa Chuck always seemed to be full of laughter and fun everytime we saw him. I remember one time stopping by to eat dinner with Lesli and Danny years ago, Papa Chuck was there, and we were having “Potatoes O’Gilligan” (instead of Potatoes O’Brien). I am sure all of you have many, many wonderful memories of him, too. :)

You are all in our thoughts and prayers.

Love,
Kristi and Corey (Lesli’s sister and nephew)
