Robert Bowers Obituary

Published by Richmond Times-Dispatch from Sep. 26 to Sep. 27, 2008.
BOWERS, Robert Lee, Ed.D., of Richmond, born July 22, 1932, died September 24, 2008. He is survived by his loving wife of 52 years, Barbara Burbank Bowers; his three sons, Richard Bowers, Alan Bowers and Robert Lee Bowers Jr. and wife, Melinda; his brother, Jerry and wife, Margaret; granddaughters, Melissa and Christina Bowers; and one grandson, Andrew Robert Jackson. He studied at Southern Baptist Theological Seminary in Louisville, Ky., RPI (VCU) in Richmond, Va., and received his Doctor's Degree in Education from the University of Kentucky. Upon graduation, he was one of the original faculty members at J. Sargeant Reynolds Community College, where he served eight years. He finished his professional career at Fairmont State University as Division Chairman of Commerce, where he served for 13 years. He was a loving husband, father, brother and son. He loved the Lord and his church and the opportunities he had to collaborate musically with others in orchestras. He lived his life as an example of a humble servant, placing others above himself and instilling those values in others. He will be truly missed. The family will receive friends Saturday, September 27, from 5 to 7 p.m. at the West Chapel of Bennett Funeral Home, 11020 W. Broad Street, also where a funeral service will be conducted Sunday, September 28, at 3 p.m. Interment Westhampton Memorial Park.

Dear Barbara & Family,
What great disbelief and sadness was felt upon hearing of Bob's homegoing. He was very special to me and the members of the Aloma Orchestra when you were in Central Florida. In addition to our 'TubaTalks', I will cherish the times we shared playing for our Lord. The conversations and wonderful recordings Bob shared with me are priceless. Bob was a wonderful man of God and someone that I admired greatly. We rejoice with you as God welcomed him home this week.
Yours & His,
Rev. Steven Parker
