Patricia Wharton Phillips

PHILLIPS, Patricia Wharton, of Virginia Beach, Va., born 1932 in Richmond, Va. passed away after a protracted bout with cancer. Her fight with cancer demonstrated her strength and courage as she battled the disease and fought to avoid creating a burden for others. She passed away at home with her family by her side. She is survived by her husband, Colonel Edward L. Phillips, USA (Ret.); and sister, Joan Wharton Phillips of Midlothian, Va. She was predeceased by her sister, Maria Wharton Williamson; and a son, Edward L. Phillips II. She is also survived by daughters, Catherine Outlaw and husband, James Outlaw, of Colonial Heights, Va.; Theresa Foster, Susan Sarrett and husband, Davis Sarrett, and Mary Anne Flanagan and husband, Mark Flanagan, all of Virginia Beach, Va. She is also survived by sons, Stephen of Culpeper, Va. and fiance‚, Gwen Jordan, and Mark of Bluffton, S.C. and his wife, Nancy Phillips; and sisters-in-law, Catherine Romaine and Loretta Small. She has 14 grandchildren, Kevin Hardy, Kelly Brekke, Hillary Foster, Timothy Garrett, Kathleen Johnson, David Sarrett, Jordan Sarrett, Sarah Paige Phillips, Bryant Phillips, Amelia Phillips, Edward Phillips III, Victoria Merritt, Kerry Flanagan and Allen (Pete) Flanagan. Pat was also survived by four great- grandchildren, Aiden Hardy, Dillon Brekke, Nicolas Brekke and Ethan Brekke. Pat grew up in Richmond and attended St. Gertrude School where she graduated in 1949. In 1952, she married Edward L. Phillips and together they provided a wonderful home full of immense honor, love, devoted affection and grace. She was active in civil organizations to include the Red Cross and Officer's Wives Clubs. Pat was an avid bridge player and participated in several clubs. The family would like to extend their thanks to The Virginia Beach Hospice Program, specifically Linda, Maggie and Dr. Patterson, with additional thanks to caregivers, Joyce and Denise for all of their support and kindness. A funeral service will be held at 2:30 p.m. Saturday, September 27, 2008, in Hollomon-Brown Funeral Home, Great Neck Chapel by Fr. Timothy M. Kuhneman. Burial will be in Arlington National Cemetery at a later date.
