ELLIS, The Honorable Andrew Jackson Jr. "Jack", 78, of Broomfield Farm, Beaverdam, Va., passed away Sunday, October 12, 2008. He is survived by his wife of 54 years, Dorothy Lichliter Ellis; his three children, Elizabeth Ellis Attkisson and husband, John Henry, Andrew "Ace" Ellis and wife, Kelly, and William "Bill" Ellis; six grandchildren, Erin Cobb and husband, Phillip, Ross Attkisson, Brent Attkisson, Carter Ellis, Kate Ellis, and Ann Claiborne Ellis; two great-grandchildren, Ashton and Brown Cobb; and his close friend, Walter Emerson. Mr. Ellis had a great love for his bird dogs, hunting, his cattle farm, practicing law and service to his community. Jack retired from Mays Valentine in 1996, after 41 years of practicing law. He served as 1st Lt., Judge Advocate General's Corps, U.S. Army from 1953 to 1955. He was a member of Fork Episcopal Church; The Virginia State Bar; Hanover (past president), 15th Judicial (past president), Richmond and Virginia Bar Associations; the Virginia Trial Lawyer's Association; American Judicature Society; National Council of Juvenile and Family Court Judges; Fellow, American College of Trial Lawyers; Fellow, Virginia Law Foundation; Commonwealth's Attorney, Hanover County; County Attorney, Hanover County; Councilman and Mayor, Town of Ashland; Substitute Hanover County Judge, past president of Ashland Chamber of Commerce; Capitol Region Advisory Board First & Merchants National Bank and Nations Bank; member Ashland Kiwanis Club; Board of Trustees, J. Sargeant Reynolds Community College; Sons of the American Revolution; and a retired substitute judge of the 15th Judicial District Juvenile and Domestic Relations District Court and General District Court. The family will receive friends at the Nelsen Funeral Home, Reid Chapel, 412 S. Washington Hwy., Ashland, Va. from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, October 14. Funeral services will be held 11 a.m. Wednesday, October 15 at the Fork Episcopal Church. Interment Woodland Cemetery, Ashland. In lieu of flowers, please make contributions to the Alzheimer's Association or the American Cancer Society.

I used to work at Ashland Nursing and Rehab. I am just finding out about the passing of Mr. Ellis. I looked forward to seeing his smiling face everyday coming to visit his wife. I am very saddened to find out about his passing. Your family is in my prayers.

My heart goes out to Mr. Ellis' family, he was such a long standing family friend to us all. He and my dad were the best of friends for 50 years - I believe. I was so fond of him and I'm blessed to have known such a fine southern gentleman. I'm sure this is a huge loss to his family and to many people that knew him.
