John Hilker Obituary

HILKER, John Hamilton 78, of Charlottesville, died on Friday, October 24, 2008. He was born May 3, 1930 in Front Royal. He was the son of the late Ralph John Hilker and Kathleen White Hilker. Mr. Hilker was a graduate of Duke University, a member of the Duke Chapel Choir and the Duke Men's Glee Club. He was a member of Wesley Memorial United Methodist Church. He was also a member of and sang with the Oratorio Society of Charlottesville-Albemarle, and retired with 37 years of service from State Farm Insurance Companies. He is survived by his wife, Louise Ashby Hilker; a daughter, Kathleen Hilker Crockett and her husband, John, of Fairfax; two sons, John H. Hilker Jr. and his wife, Jennifer, of Crozet and Robert A. Hilker of Keller, Texas; and six grandchildren, Martha Crockett, Will Crockett, Emily Hilker, Jacob Hilker, Emma Hilker, and Mary Hilker. A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. on Wednesday, October 29, 2008, in the Wesley Memorial United Methodist Church with Rev. Dr. Elizabeth Foss officiating. Interment will be private. The family will receive friends at Hill and Wood Funeral Home on Tuesday evening from 6 until 7 p.m. The family asks that, in lieu of flowers, memorial donations be made to the Wesley Memorial United Methodist Church, 1901 Thomson Rd., Charlottesville, Va. 22903, or The Oratorio Society of Charlottesville-Albemarle, P.O. Box 5073, Charlottesville, Va. 22905-5073. Friends may send condolences to the family at www.hillandwood.com.

It did not take long being in John's presence to know he was a quality person. I only knew John for a short time, but benefitted from knowing him.
