Richard Haines Obituary

Published by Richmond Times-Dispatch on Nov. 4, 2008.
HAINES, Richard Vernon, of Richmond, Virginia, died suddenly in his home on Wednesday, October 29, 2008, of a cardiovas-cular condition. He was 50. Born in Williamsport, Pennsylvania and raised in New Hampshire, he moved to Richmond to attend Virginia Commonwealth University, majoring in Fine Arts. Richard spent his career involved in the culinary arts, working at various eating establishments in and around Richmond. More recently, he was involved in dining room management for Meriwether Godsey, Inc., at St. Catherine's School for girls, and as Sous Chef for Roslyn, a retreat of the Episcopal Diocese of Virginia. Richard not only enjoyed food preparation as an occupation, he took great pleasure and pride in creating fine food dishes for his family and friends. Richard also enjoyed reading, book collecting, and was an avid outdoorsman. He especially enjoyed bird hunting and fishing in and around the Chesapeake Bay area of Virginia. Son of Frank Richard Haines and Leona Haines Davis, he is survived by his mother and stepfather, Richard Davis; and brothers, John Haines, his wife, Vickie, and their daughter, Rebecca; Dan Haines and his daughter, Jennifer; and Paul Haines, his wife, Patty, and their children, Joshua and Benjamin. Graveside services will be held in Hillsboro, New Hampshire at a later date. Expressions of sympathy may be sent to his family at 303 South St., Concord, N.H. 03301. In lieu of flowers, donations in Richard's memory may be made to your local SPCA.

To a Great Man, an Awesome Friend, an Excellent Cook, to the man that changed my life and my family forever. For all the love he gave us and the great times we had together, thank you for becoming part of my life, of my family and for allowing us to be part off yours. You will always be on my thoughts, but more important in my heart.

I Love you Rico

Richard was a great guy whom we've known for 30 or so years, including a dozen years when he lived in an apartment at our house. I remember Thanksgiving and Christmas dinners when he would bring the most wonderful foods that were exquisitely presented. He was a humorous and reflective soul who enjoyed life and was like a member of the family. We extend our sincerest condolences to his family and loved ones. May God bless.

I Did Not Die

Do not stand at my grave and forever weep.
I am not there; I do not sleep.
I am a thousand winds that blow.
I am the diamond glints on snow.
I am the sunlight on ripened grain.
I am the gentle autumn's rain.
When you awaken in the morning's hush
I am the swift uplifting rush
Of quiet birds in circled flight.
I am the soft stars that shine at night.
Do not stand at my grave and forever cry.
I am not there. I did not die.

I had the pleasure of sharing some beautiful moments with Rico. I shall always remember him, for his caring ways. When words aren't enough...When it's hard to understand why...May there be comfort and peace to the family.
You'll always be remembered in my heart.

Remember

Remember me when I am gone away,
Gone far away into the silent land;
When you can no more hold me by the hand,
Nor I half turn to go yet turning stay.
Remember me when no more day by day
You tell me of our future that you plann'd:
Only remember me; you understand
It will be late to counsel then or pray.
Yet if you should forget me for a while
And afterwards remember, do not grieve:
For if the darkness and corruption leave
A vestige of the thoughts that once I had,
Better by far you should forget and smile
Than that you should remember and be sad.
