VARGO, Frank J., 85, of Richmond, formerly of Colonial Beach, died November 4, 2008. He is survived by his wife of 60 years, Ann McCready Vargo; his children, Mary Vargo, Susan Thompson, Mark Vargo, Ann Francis Jones and John Edward Vargo; grandchildren, David and Elizabeth Thompson, Katie Jones and Sutton Vargo; brother, Gregory Vargo of Phoenix, Ariz. He was employed at Lockheed Martin and was retired from the DEA, Department of Justice. Frank, a WWII Army veteran, participated in the D-Day Invasion as a member of the 1st Division and was awarded the Purple Heart and the Bronze Star medals. He recently published a memoir, "The Apprentice Soldier", of his wartime experiences. The family will receive friends 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Friday at Bliley's-Central, 3801 Augusta Ave. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held 11 a.m. Saturday at St. Paul's Catholic Church, 909 Rennie Ave. A graveside service will be held 3 p.m. Saturday at St. Peter's Cemetery, Oak Grove, Va.

I wish my kids could have known you better. I know they would have benefitted from your wisdom, wit and caring. Thanks, Frank, for all the memories. You were always a unique individual, truly one in a million! You'll be sorely missed by everyone who knew you.
