Donald Scales Obituary

Published by Richmond Times-Dispatch from Dec. 14 to Dec. 15, 2008.
SCALES, Rev. Donald Francis Joseph, 80, of the Order of Saint Benedict (OSB), departed this life on December 12, 2008, at Mary, Mother of the Church Abbey in Richmond. He entered Belmont Abbey in North Carolina as a novice in 1948, and attended Belmont Abbey Seminary, being ordained a priest at Belmont Abbey on June 17, 1955. Fr. Donald then was sent to Benedictine High School in Richmond, where he worked for two years and again from 1960-61, before being sent back to Belmont Abbey. After many different assignments and obtaining a Masters' Degree in Guidance and Counseling, Fr. Donald returned to Richmond for the final time in 1980. He had since remained as a monk, serving at Benedictine as a religion teacher until his retirement and as a board member until his death. He served first as associate pastor and then as pastor of St. Benedict Catholic Church, Richmond until 1999. For many years and until his last days, he also served as the beloved Prior of his monastery. Never without a cigar or a smile, Fr. Donald baptized, served first communions, heard confessions, officiated weddings, offered last rites, and given the eulogies of countless numbers of Christians. Through his loving and comforting care, Fr. Donald provided years of spiritual guidance and friendship to anyone he met. Fr. Donald is survived by his monastic brothers; two sisters-in-law, Carol Scales and Martha Scales; his nieces and nephews, Sandra Scales-Siwek, Cecile Matty, Eric Scales, Maryanne "Sissy" Thomas, Hank Thomas, Randy Thomas, and Paul Thomas; and one cousin, William Colliton. His body will be received in St. Benedict Catholic Church, 300 N. Sheppard St., at 5 p.m. Tuesday, with visitation following until 7 p.m., when a Vigil Mass will be celebrated by The Most Rev. Francis X. DiLorenzo, Bishop of The Catholic Diocese of Richmond. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated 10 a.m. Wednesday at Mary, Mother of the Church Abbey, with burial to follow in the Monastery Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Fr. Donald Memorial Fund at Mary, Mother of the Church Abbey, 12829 River Rd., Richmond, Va. 23238-7206.

Today, Jimmy and I went to a Funeral at St. Benedict's and thought for sure that Fr. Donald would be doing the Mass. We were prepared to hear his homily....Forgive, Forgive, Forgive and Forgive.....Tell the Story! We will truly miss you, Father Donald. It was a gift and a pleasure to have know you for so many years. Rest in Peace.

Father Donald was one of my favorite priests at St. Benedict's Church. He knew my older brothers and my parents, and he always called me "Little Sister" whenever he administered Communion or when I went to him for Confession. I will miss his homilies which always included humor as well as sincere messages of faith and love. Rest in peace, Father Donald-you will be missed by all.

Fr. Donald had his own unique way of teaching. I doubt there is another teacher or priest in the world that offer words of wisdom, religious guidance or English grammar tips from a standing head lock. He was a special teacher and friend to countless cadets. His example shaped me into the teacher I am today. My life will be truly complete if I can make half the impression on my students that Fr. Donald made on me.

I will truely miss this man of God.He wasnot only a good friend but an outstanding Benedictine monk-priest. I first met Father Donald while as a student in the Prep. School and later on in my days in the College. Many years later he set me straight while he was Asst. Pastor at St. Michael's in Gastonia,N.C. I Owe him. I know that he is in Heaven with all the deceased monks especially Abbot Walter. Pray for me my dear friend.

Father Donald will never be forgotten, he sincerely listened to all who spoke, he greeted all who walked by, and loved all who came into his life. I was privileged to met him, work for him, pray with him, and be in his presence. At this time of gift giving I know I received a great gift in the wonder of Father Donald. I think God is enjoying the gift of Father Donald as he arrived at heaven's gate.

Father Donald was more than a priest or a teacher to me. He was my friend. I will miss him putting me in headlock and asking me, "How are you today my child?" Father Donald took his time to listen to me and to help me when I needed a friend or a guide through life the most. He taught me that it took a true man to show his emotions, that it was ok for the world to see you cry. Father D if you look down you will see all of us crying now. My thoughts and prayers are with all the members of the Benedictine Family and the family of Father Donald. We all share the loss of a great teacher and friend. His memory will live on in our stories of him.

It is with deep sadness to hear of Father Donald passing. He was our favorite priest while we were members of St. Benedict Church. He always found ways to make you laugh and still offered words of comfort in time of need. Father Donald officiated our wedding in 1983, bapitized our son and gave eulogies for our parents. We will miss his gentle soul and kind heart.
You are in our thoughts and prayers.
