Carl Armstrong Obituary

Published by Richmond Times-Dispatch on Mar. 7, 2009.
ARMSTRONG, Carl William M.D., surrendered to the ravages of cancer on the evening of March 5, 2009 after a defiant seven year struggle for life. He had just celebrated his 59th birthday. Born February 25, 1950 in Geneva, Switzerland to American parents, he was the son of John I. Armstrong Jr. and Margaret A. Hollands. Left to carry on in his family include his father, John Armstrong; his brother, Alan Armstrong and his wife, Melody Armstrong; Barbara, his devoted wife (and tandem stoker) of more than 35 years; and his cherished children, daughters, Charis Armstrong Lyon and her husband, Keith Lyon, Amelia Armstrong Weinman and her husband, Jeremy Weinman; and his son, Matthew Carl Armstrong. Carl graduated from Kenyon College in 1971 and Case Western Reserve School of Medicine in 1975. He received his training in Internal Medicine at Tufts New England Medical Center, and decided early in his medical career that public health would be his focus. He was an Epidemic Intelligence Service Officer with the Center for Disease Control from 1978 to 1980 assigned to the Virginia Department of Health. After the conclusion of an Infectious Disease Fellowship at MCV in 1982, Carl began his career in public health as the Director of Health Hazards Control with the Virginia Department of Health. He later became a local health director for the Piedmont Health District in Farmville, a senior medical advisor for the Virginia Hospital and Healthcare Association and finally the Director of The Office of Epidemiology with the Virginia Department of Health. He led a distinguished commitment to public health throughout his life, a recipient of many awards and revered by his colleagues and co-workers as a man of integrity and sound judgment. Before his cancer diagnosis, Carl enjoyed competing in triathlons. He and Barbara have been long standing members of the Richmond Area Bicycling Association and Carl continued to ride with the club until October of 2008 in spite of the many challenges that faced him. He and Barbara particularly loved riding their tandem, aka "Blazing Saddles". He lived life to the fullest, was devoted to his family and was dedicated to his work in public health. A celebration of his life will be held in the auditorium of the Lewis Ginter Botanical Gardens at 10 a.m. April 11, 2009. RABA members who wish to attend are encouraged to ride from Laurel Park Shopping Center to the gardens. A ride notice will be posted in the April newsletter. In lieu of flowers, please send contributions in Carl's memory to The Chris Desch Foundation, P.O. Box 8467, Richmond, Va. 23226, www.thechrisdeschfoundation.org.

CYCLING THRU
Copper gold the color of the sun
The racing bike with all those gears
You had to learn to change
Years and years ago and all the same
You still know what you saved up for
And how it was the joy and pride
Of a boy who sometimes wanted nothing more
Than just to ride and ride and ride

And now how good it feels
The wind upon your face
Carried by the turning of those wheels
From Place to Place
With all that’s there to view
Cycling thru cycling thru

And thank heaven for the tandem too
Where you and your love can ride as one
Taking the road together just as it comes
Each willing to share the load
Through the valleys up the hills
Going from where both of you've begun
To the ending of your day
Sharing in the colors of the sun

These were planned song lyrics that then somehow, of their own accord, transformed themselves into a poem to be spoken. I wrote this for Carl and for Carl and Barb in 2007. I'd asked Carl about his early memories of riding a bike I buildt some of what he told me into this. A lovely serendipitous moment was when Carl and Barb and I got to see each other again several years ago in Heidelberg where I live...what did we see on an ordinary street at no special event- a tandem with a couple cycling through.
I am writing this now right around the time of the memorial event today. I met Carl when we were freshmen at Kenyon. What teachers he and Barb have become for me regarding what it means to be brave and to live compassionatly and well.
All the best to all those who are missing Carl but also feeling deep gratitude for his life and what he has given us.

I had the pleasure of meeting Carl in 2004 when residents from the VCU Preventive Medicine Residency Program were assigned to work under his guidance. He was a kind and inspiring MAN who will be missed. Know he is with our Father: "My sheep hear My voice, and I know them, and they follow Me. 28 And I give them eternal life, and they shall never perish; neither shall anyone snatch them out of My hand. 29 My Father, who has given them to Me, is greater than all; and no one is able to snatch them out of My Father’s hand." John 10:27-29

Barb, I am so pleased I had the opportunity to meet you and Carl. You both have been an inspiration and have made me realize how precious life is. I thoroughly enjoyed the bike rides we shared and Barb, know that there are 3 cyclists in Newport News that are ready to ride whenever you are up for it.
Sending you and your family love and prayers.

Dear Armstrong family members, Just as you will miss your son, husband and Dad, I, like so many of his colleagues, will miss a friend and collaborator. I had the good fortune to work with Carl, primarily in his role at VHHA....determining the best ways to engage physician leaders around the important work to be done in health systems. We also enjoyed talking about running and mission trips to Haiti. Nothing can equal the void left in each of your lives, but this Commonwealth and its inhabitants, its medical professionals and hospitals, are all better places because of the life that Carl Armstrong MD lived! As a fellow VHHA co-worker, I had the pleasure of working with Carl on a limited basis, but enought to know he was an extrodinary human being in many ways. We often spoke about his bike riding trips as this was a hobby we shared and always brought a smile to his face.

We will greatly miss Carl in the field of Infectious Diseases and Epidemiology.. I have memories of Carl (in 1984) coming over with his computer that fit in a small suicase, the screen 5 x 5 teaching me statistical analysis of epidemiologic data. I was a 2nd year fellow in ID at MCV and was quite grateful to him for taking the time out to share his expertise.. Now as CME director at our hospital in Newport News, I have had him speak at our Grand Rounds and everyone greatly enjoyed his presentations. I will miss Carl on a personal and professional level, my deepest sympathies to his family.

Dear Armstrong Family, Words are inadequate for telling you all how much your kind, thoughtful, gentle, funny, strong , inspirational father meant to all his colleagues throughout the years we had the privilege of knowing and a double bonus working with him. He was a very special man and will hold always a profound memory for me in my head and in my heart.

Most people, most of all Carl, will probably never know the magnitude of persons he touched in such a kind and respectful way. I knew Carl well at VDH and have not seen him in years. I always associated him with the highest level of integrity, professionalism, and warmth that every public official should aspire to. His legacy will long outlive his watch.

Because of our son Carl Keith, we met Charis. Because of Charis, we met Carl. And because we met Carl, we got to know, for such a brief time, what a wonderful person he was. His courage and strength through hard times are inspiring, and remembering that will carry me though anything I might have to bear. Everytime I hear a Kingston Trio song or a Smothers Brothers sketch, I will be reminded of him.
Peace and love to all the Armstrongs.

It was an honor and pleasure to know this wonderful, caring and dedicated man, as well as to be a part of his extended family. From the very first, we felt that in Carl and Barb, we had new best friends. In addition to the obvious and numerous contributions that Carl made to this world, he has left a lasting legacy - a man's true legacy is his family and by that measure, Carl has left the most wonderful legacy possible. Thank you Carl and Barb for your gift of Charis.
