Katherine Sergeant Newby

NEWBY, Mrs. Katherine Sergeant, passed away on Thursday night, March 5, 2009, at Westminster Canterbury, in Virginia Beach. She was 95 years old. She is survived by two sons, William Edward Newby Jr. of Clearwater, Fla., John Scott Newby of Fayetteville, Ark.; and a brother, William T. Sergeant of Knoxville, Tenn. She was predeceased by her loving husband, Dr. William Edward Newby. Born on Christmas Day of 1913, Katherine was the daughter of David Sergeant and Floy Kratz of Richmond, Va. Katherine was educated in the public schools of Richmond and was graduated from Westhampton College at the University of Richmond. After a career as a professional educator, Katherine became a loving and dedicated wife and mother. Katherine was a member of The Colonial Dames of the 17th Century, Daughters of the American Revolution and Founders of Manakin in The Colony of Virginia. She was also a member of the Princess Anne Country Club and the Country Club of Virginia. Katherine belonged to Galilee Episcopal Church in Virginia Beach. All who knew her loved her. Katherine valued each person she met. The family will greet friends at the reception following services at Holy Trinity Chapel, at Westminster Canterbury, on Wednesday, March 11, at 11 a.m. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Ocean Park Rescue in Virginia Beach or Westminster Canterbury Fellowship.
