Richard L. Vaughn

VAUGHN, Richard L., 78, of Dinwiddie, Va., passed away Friday, August 21, 2009 after an extended battle with Alzheimer's Disease. He was a devoted husband, loving father, and friend to everyone he met. Richard was born and raised in Lynchburg, Va.; served in the Army during the Korean War, received his B.S. degree from Lynchburg College, and earned his Doctorate degree in education from U.V.A. He worked in the Lynchburg public school system and served as Superintendent of Schools in Franklin, Va. prior to settling down in Dinwiddie. It was here that Richard truly found his niche as Superintendent of Dinwiddie County Public Schools until retiring in 1993. He was passionate about education and cherished the relationships built along the way. He is survived by his wife, Karen of Dinwiddie, Va.; son, Richard and his wife, Katie, of Dinwiddie, Va.; son, Christopher, his wife Lisa, and three grandchildren of Chesapeake, Va.; sister-in-law, Ladora Vaughn of Georgia; nephew, Henry Vaughn and his wife, Sandra, of North Carolina; niece, Betsy Maness and her husband, Michael, of Georgia; nephew, Curtis Garner and his wife, Stuart, of Alabama; nephew, Patrick Garner and his wife, Debbie, of Illinois; and John and Carol Gordon of Georgia. The funeral service will be held at 10 a.m. Wednesday, August 26, 2009 at the Petersburg Chapel of J.T. Morriss & Son Funeral Home & Cremation Service.
