CLAIBORNE, Lindsey Cabell, of La Jolla, California, died Saturday, September 12, 2009. He is survived by his wife, Barbara Lauer Claiborne of La Jolla; his brother, Dr. Herbert A. Claiborne Jr.; his sister, Frances Claiborne Guy, both of Richmond, Virginia; and a number of nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his parents, Herbert A. Claiborne and Eleanor Hazard Lindsey; his stepmother, Virginia Christian Claiborne; and his sister, Catherine Claiborne Hall. Born April 18, 1915 in Richmond, he attended Miss Susie Slaughter's School, St. Christopher's School and Episcopal High School. He attended the University of Virginia, graduating with his Law Degree in 1938, and practiced in Richmond for nearly three years before being commissioned as an Ensign in the U.S. Naval Reserve in June 1941. During World War II he served in both the Navy Department in Washington and aboard ship in the South Pacific. He was wounded in the battle of Guam, was awarded the Bronze Star and Purple Heart, and in 1946 was retired for disabilities as a Commander in the Naval Reserve. He then studied accounting and undertook professional accounting and income tax work in San Diego and La Jolla. He married Barbara Joan Lauer on May 5, 1973 in La Jolla. He was a member of the Society of the Cincinnati and was active in several veterans groups, tennis groups, the La Jolla Optimist Club, the University of Virginia Alumni Club of San Diego County, as well as a member of the St. James by the Sea Episcopal Church.
