BOCK, Bernice Sobel 77, of Carrboro, daughter of the late Ann and Robert Sobel, passed away at home on August 23, 2008. As a young woman, Bernice was vibrant and connected with the hearts of everyone around her. Her passion for the healing arts led her to study Reiki and hypnotherapy. She was an avid reader, crossword puzzle master and Sudoku enthusiast, a member of the Westbourne Garden Club and the Red Hat Society. While living in Richmond, she volunteered at Beth Shalom Nursing Home and MCV Hospitality House. After 22 years of service, she retired from the U.S. Post Office, where she was known to all as "Your Niceness." Bernice is survived by her loving husband of 60 years, Herbert; brother and sister-in-law, Ron and Faye Sobel; her sister, Sue Vesley; her son and daughter-in-law, Steven and Vickie Bock; her daughter, Debra Gail Jansen; her daughter and son-in-law, Jodi Bock and Dan Iott; her daughter, Saundra Bock; her son and daughter-in-law, David and Heather Bock; four grandchildren, Victoria, Kimberly, Brock and Vanessa; and her great-grandson, Xander. Born and raised in the Bronx, N.Y., Bernice and her husband lived in Richmond, Va. for most of their married life, where they raised their five children. The family wishes to thank Dr. Richard Goldberg and his staff at UNC Oncology and nurses Pat and Elizabeth of the Infusion Clinic. The family extends their love and appreciation to her caregivers, Herb, Onja, Jodi, Beverly and the staff of UNC Hospice who so tenderly cared for her while she was at home. Bernice will be best remembered for her compassionate and loving spirit, her sense of humor and her commitment to her family. She was a great lady and was deeply loved. A memorial service will be held Tuesday, August 26, 2008 at 11 a.m., in the Howerton & Bryan Funeral Chapel. Officiating will be Rabbi Jessica Marshall. The family will receive friends immediately following the service in the funeral home.
