Barbara Bock Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Carlucci-Golden-DeSantis Funeral Home, Inc. on Dec. 6, 2025.
Barbara Greenwald Bock, of New York City and formerly of Scranton, PA, passed away peacefully on December 5th at her sister's home in Warwick, RI.

She was the daughter of the late Alvin H. and Shirley Friedman Greenwald. Barbara was a graduate of Central High School, Class of 1969, University of Pittsburgh and Columbia University where she earned her Master's in Social Work degree. She helped hundreds of people in her practice as a psychotherapist and addiction specialist. Her commitment to helping people struggling with addiction and mental health challenges reflected her belief in the dignity of every person. A New Yorker at heart, she deeply appreciated the city's cultural offerings including the New York City Ballet, the New York Philharmonic and the Roundabout Theater Company.

Barbara was a loyal friend, a loving and compassionate mom, and a great listener. With her close friends and family, she discussed the best food and restaurants, her favorite tennis stars, liberal politics and special places to travel. She enjoyed cooking, especially for the Jewish holidays, and was known to make an incredible noodle pudding, among many other dishes. Barbara was a constant presence and confidante for all who were lucky enough to be in her world.

Barbara is survived by her sons Jonathan and Matthew, both of Brooklyn, NY, her sister Carol Mazmanian and her husband Brian, her nephew Daniel Mazmanian and his wife Melissa and her two great nieces Kira and Ilana.

A graveside service will be held on Monday, December 8th at 12:00 noon at the Temple Israel Cemetery, Dunmore, with services by Rabbi Dovid Saks.

Shiva will be held on Monday, December 8 and Tuesday, December 9 from 5:30-8:30pm at the home of Ellen Abrams, 211 Central Park West between 81st and 82nd Streets, Apt 15K.

Contributions in Barbara's memory may be made to St. Jude’s Hospital or the Food Bank for NYC.
