Herbert Fitch Obituary

Fitch, Herbert David STILLWATER Herbert David Fitch Sr., 77, of No. Hudson Ave., died Sunday morning, July 6, 2008 at his residence after a brief illness. Born in Waterford, April 29, 1931, son of the late Charles and Elizabeth O'Dwyer Fitch, Herb was a graduate of Lasalle Institute and later attended Siena College. He later served four years with the U.S. Navy. Herb was a postal carrier for the Mechanicville Post Office for many years and also ran Fitch Bros. as a TV repairman working with his brother. He was retired from the National Rural Letter Carriers Association. He also enjoyed horses and working with them as he trained standard bred horses at the Saratoga Raceway. A sports enthusiast, Herb enjoyed playing tennis, bowling, swimming, and was an avid Boston Red Sox fan. His true passion in life however, was the time he spent with his family and his relationship with God. Survivors include his wife of 54 years, Jean Lombardo Fitch whom he married on June 6, 1954; his daughters, Deborah (Richard) Mix of Perry, N.Y., Kathleen John) Morocco of Mechanicville, Bianca (Everett) Folmsbee of Malta; and sons, Herbert (Sabrina Nims) Fitch, Jr. of Fort Edward and Anthony (Praphai) Fitch of Mechanicville. He is also survived by 14 grandchildren and 11 great-grand-children as well as brothers, Albert and Thomas Fitch, both of Troy. Herb was predeceased by an infant son, David Herbert Fitch; a brother, Robert Fitch and a sister, Marie Fitch Gallagher. The Fitch family would like to extend many thanks to Dr. Ferraro and his staff at Latham NYOH and also to Community Hospice of Saratoga for their thoughtfulness and the loving care that was shown by all. A funeral service will be held Wednesday 8 p.m. at the DeVito-Salvadore Funeral Home, 39 So. Main St., Mechanicville, NY 12118. Calling hours on Wednesday from 4-8 p.m. Interment with full military honors in the Saratoga National Cemetery will be held at the convenience of the family. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Herbert's great-grandsons medical expenses at Zachary's Medical Fund, First Niagara Bank, 843 Clifton Park, NY 12065 in loving memory of Herbert D. To family and friends of Herb Fitch. I only got to know him a few times at the reunion. He seemed like a very caring, wonderful, and giving individual. He and Aunt Jean made me feel like family from the 1st time I met them. I could tell from the very begining how much family was important to him. Even though he was in pain from his treatment he was always pleasant, and full of life. He gave his family more time with him, and that is truly a remarkable trait. He is not suffering any longer and even though we all know he is in a better place, it is hard for the ones that have remained not to miss him. Our prayers and thoughts are all with you.

I did not really get the chance to be better aquainted with you as much as i wish i did. I remember the first time i met you and you were a bright happy guy that continuously made me laugh. You're family misses you very much even though you are in a better place and i am so happy you are with my grandma marie you're big sister. I love you uncle Herb. I won't say "loved" because it's still existing as i am sure it is with many others. I believe your love and kindness will be eternally lived through your family because you shared something rare and precious with us. You will be deeply missed but never forgotten! I LOVE YOU UNCLE HERB!!!!

Grandpa,

So sorry to see you go - however, I know you are in a peaceful place now - no more suffering.

I will never forget you - or your silly stories and discussions about virtually any topic under the sun -

I will always remember how impressed you were with Brendan - how smart he was, how good he was - always tinkering and asking questions - you loved getting his report card and having us visit you.

We will remember you fondly - always - and when Brendan plays chess, we will think of you - and your love of it -

We will miss you - and will always love you!

Love,

Your oldest grandaughter and oldest great grandchild,

Melissa and Brendan
