Edward Hayes Obituary

Hayes, Edward J. Jr. DELMAR Edward J. Hayes Jr., 72, of Delmar, died at St. Peter's Hospital in Albany on July 22, 2008 after a long illness. Born in Troy, he was the son of the late Edward J. and Vera McKnight Hayes and the husband of Virginia (Ginny)_ Long Hayes. Ed attended Sacred Heart School and graduated from LaSalle Institute of Troy in 1955. He attended Virginia Military Institute in Lexington, Va. Ed was employed by the former National Commercial Bank and Trust Co. which became Key Bank NA. Ed held numerous positions including teller, branch manager and assistant vice president. Ed was a driver and teller on a mobile bank bus in the early years of his career, and later managed branches in Ravena, Elsmere and Westerlo, retiring with 30 years of service in 1994. Ed was a communicant of St. Thomas Church in Delmar. He was a member and executive officer in several organizations. He was president of the Kiwanis Club of the Helderbergs, Berne, in 1987-1988 and most recently a member of the Bethlehem Kiwanis Club. He was a member of NY Air Force Association since 1979, treasurer of the Albany Chapter AFA #197 since 1979, NY State AFA state vice president 1988-1993 and a receiver of the AFA Exceptional Service Award in 1998. He was a life member of Empire State Aero Sciences Museum in Scotia. He served his country in the U.S. Army Reserves (1958-1967) and the Army National Guard (1981-1983) with rank of Sgt. E-5. Ed was an avid NY Yankee fan and an exceptional tennis player from Prospect Park in Troy. In addition to his wife, Ed is survived by his daughter and pride and joy, Sarah Lynn Hayes; and grandchildren, Edward J. (Eddie) and Alicia (Ali) of Delmar. He is the brother of Patricia A. (Carl) Honecker of Rehoboth Beach, Del., Linda M. (John) Mainwaring of Guilford, Conn. and Robert K. Hayes of Center Brunswick, N.Y. Ed was a loving uncle to numerous nieces, nephews, great-nieces and nephews. We extend our deepest appreciation to the staff in the critical care unit and the Hospice Inn of St. Peter's Hospital for their caring service. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Saturday, July 26, 2008 at 9:30 a.m. at the Church of St. Thomas the Apostle, Delmar. Family and friends may call at the Applebee Funeral Home, 403 Kenwood Avenue, Delmar on Friday from 4 to 8 p.m. Burial will be in Bethlehem Cemetery, Delmar. Those desiring may send a remembrance in Ed's name to the Delmar Kiwanis Foundation LTD, P.O. Box 121 , Delmar, NY 12054.
