Ann Wright Obituary

Wright, Ann C. VOORHEES, N.J. Ann C. Wright, a long time resident of Cohoes, died recently in Voorhees, November 18, 2007. Ann was born in Cohoes on July 19, 1921 to Thomas and Grace Corbett. She was proud to say that she grew up on Mangham Street, and was a lifelong parishioner of Saint Agnes Church. She graduated from Saint Agnes Grammar School and Cohoes High School. After graduation, she took a position as a secretary at Cohoes High School and later as secretary to the superintendent of schools. It was while working at the high school that she met her future husband, Joseph S. Wright who was a teacher and coach at the high school. He would later go on to serve as principal of Abram Lansing School and assistant superintendent of the Cohoes School District. Ann and Joe were wed in 1943. She continued to work in the school system after he entered the service. She left work to raise her son, Tom, but later returned to work for International Harvester, and later as secretary to the dean of the Graduate School of Public Affairs at SUNY. After her husband's death in 1970, she became more active in the community and was elected to a term on the board of education of Cohoes, where she liked to say she brought a common sense perspective. After retirement from SUNY in 1986, she devoted herself to her friends and family. A longtime resident of Rudolph Court, she moved from her home there to the Columbia Crest Apartments on Columbia Street in 2004. In 2006, she decided to move to N.J. to be closer to her family. She particularly enjoyed this time with her family and during her stay there, she quickly made new friends and enjoyed these friendships with other residents. She is survived by her son, Thomas Wright, his wife Ileen of Medford, N.J.; and her grandchildren, Jessica of Margate, N.J. and Joe of Charlotte, N.C.; as well as her sister, Mary Dahoda of Lewiston, N.Y. Calling hours at the Stanton-Farrell Funeral Home, 326 Columbia St., Cohoes, will be on Saturday, November 24 from 9:00 to 10:15 a.m. A funeral Mass will be held at the Church of the Holy Trinity at 10:30 a.m. Her interment will be in St. Agnes Cemetery, Cohoes. The family requests that in lieu of flowers, a donation be made to the American Cancer Society.

Ann was the wonderful person who helped me find my footing when I joined SUNY-Albany's political science department, and she put up with a lot from me and my colleagues. She really was an administrative assistant who ran the place, not just a secretary.
She kept a number of department chairs (and other secretaries) in line, "gently but firmly." She was not hesitant to "say her piece," and had a wonderful sense of humor.

So sorry to hear about Ann,s death. While I lived in Columbia Crest Ann lived across the hall so became close friends. I will remember all the times we spent together with fond memories.
